Saint Patrick’s Catholic Primary School Live, Love and Learn Like Jesus Home Learning Reception – Term 5 Week 1 – Monday 20 th April 2020 Below you will find activities for all of the 7 areas of the Early Years Foundations Stage curriculum and an activity for Religious Education (RE). Please pick your own activities from the list. But, remember, if you want to stick to a timetable and a routine, I teach phonics first (9am roughly) and maths after break time (10.45 roughly). 1: Literacy Phonics Phonics Lesson – ‘ure’ The only sound that the children will not know is ‘ure’ due to finishing school early. Please teach your child the ‘ure’ sound this week. This sound can be quite tricky for the children. A common trend is that the children confuse ‘ure’, ‘air’ and ‘ear’. You may want to spend some time this week at practicing these sounds and maybe make a sorting game or write them daily. The ‘ure’ sound isn’t in many words either. Start, by visiting YouTube and watching this video together (https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=g_2Oju8WKW4 ). Then use the sheet at the end of this document to support the learning. Say the sound and words together. Please tell your child that the ‘ure’ action is: pretend to pinch your nose and waft your other hand near your nose like you can smell manure. Using the phonics phase 2 and 3 sound mat provided (below), choose 2 sounds to practise each day. Think of something that has that sound in it. Draw and label a picture using the sound in your exercise book and write a simple caption. For example, for the sound ‘ch’, you could draw a chick and write ‘The chick went cheep’. You could also make your own sound mat if you want a challenge. Writing Write a card to someone to cheer them up, write a message and sign your name, give or send it to a family member or save it for someone special next time you see them. Reading After reading your reading book to your grown up write out a sentence from the book. Cut up each word and see if they can put the words back in the correct order. Read a favourite or familiar story, take turns pretending to be one of the characters and answer questions about how you feel, what you wish would happen next, etc. Look at the front cover of a book you haven’t read and make a prediction on what you think the book will be about. Home Learning Reception – Term 5 Week 1 – Monday 20 th April 2020

Below you will find activities for all of the 7 areas of the Early Years Foundations Stage curriculum and an activity for Religious Education (RE).Please pick your own activities from the list. But, remember, if you want to stick to a timetable and a routine, I teach phonics first (9am roughly) and maths after break time (10.45 roughly).1: Literacy Phonics

Phonics Lesson – ‘ure’The only sound that the children will not know is ‘ure’ due to finishing school early. Say the sound and words together. Please tell your child that the ‘ure’ action is: pretend to pinch your nose and waft your other hand near your nose like you can smell manure.

Draw and label a picture using the sound in your exercise book and write a simple caption. For example, for the sound ‘ch’, you could draw a chick and write ‘The chick went cheep’. Writing Write a card to someone to cheer them up, write a message and sign your name,

give or send it to a family member or save it for someone special next time you see them.

Reading After reading your reading book to your grown up write out a sentence from the

book. Cut up each word and see if they can put the words back in the correct order. Read a favourite or familiar story, take turns pretending to be one of the characters

and answer questions about how you feel, what you wish would happen next, etc. Look at the front cover of a book you haven’t read and make a prediction on what you

think the book will be about. Read the blurb and add to your prediction. Think about where the story might be set, the characters you think may be involved in the story and what you think will happen. Use the following sentence stems: I wonder if, I bet, I imagine, I think x will happen next…because…

Big Cat books have made their books available on line during school closures. This link will give you a password and link. Please look at the Big Cat section and together you can pick a fiction or non-fiction book (look at the banding of their current reading book to guide your choice). https://collins.co.uk/pages/big-cat-ebooks

Please remember that we have been developing the children’s fluency in Reception so please reread the book throughout the week. We have seen some fantastic confident story tellers.

order to 20 by the end of the year. If your child can already complete the activity below, then go above 20 or teach your child to count in 2s, 5s or 10s and they can complete a number line for 2s, etc. instead).

Draw 20 squares and write out numbers 1-20 on them. Cut them out. Ask someone to mix them up, see how long it takes you to put them back into the correct order again.

Make your own number line, collect natural resources such as leaves to write on or record numbers 1-20 on paper, ask someone to hide them for you and play hide seek, then use string, hang up your number line.

Build a tower using 7 blocks, can you build another with one less block? How many are there? Repeat with towers to 11, 13, 17, 20 and beyond if needed. Use the language of ‘fewer’ and ‘less’ to support subtraction.

Doubling Draw a ladybird with 4 spots on each side how many altogether? Draw 5

more lady birds with different numbers of dots on one side and you’re your child to double the amount.

Draw 5 spiders in a web, double the amount, how many do you have altogether? Record the number sentence, e.g. 5+5=10. Practise with different amounts. What is the biggest number you can double?

3: Communication and Language Call someone from your family to tell them what you have been doing during

the week; explain what you did yesterday and what you will be doing tomorrow. Don’t forget to ask what they have been doing.

Practise following instructions given by your adult this could be helping them to cook, wash the dishes or fold the washing. Following a two-part instruction is another assessment goal. Give your child instructions like this one: can you get me the green box and the pink pig?

Choose your favourite small toys such as animals, cars, dolls. Use an old cardboard or cereal box to create a scene for your toys. Choose one of these problems to create a story (a fire breathing dragon/ a flood/ a tornado/ a wicked witch) and decide who will save the day. Act the story out the story using your imagination.

4: Personal Social and Emotional Development Work together with your family to make a list of home

golden rules, think about the rules and values that we hold at school, such as kindness. Draw pictures and write out each rule.

Make a thankful wreath. Write something you are thankful for on each leaf and stick them together

5: Physical Development Spring clean - put plastic toys in the bath tub with washing liqud and give

them a good clean, talk about the importance of removing germs. Practise writing each letter of the alphabet. Write along the line and try to

keep your letters the same size (see handwriting sheet below). Draw the following shapes, circle, triangle, square, diamond, pentagon and

cut them out very carefully. Keep practising trying to cut carefully along the lines.

Complete 15 minutes of action songs, such as head shoulders knees and toes, Home learning based on materials from the Inspire Learning Partnership

if your happy and you know it, wind the bobbin up. Complete these daily exercises, balance on each foot for 10 seconds, 10

star jumps, 10 bunny hops, 15 squats, add your own actions each day. If you haven’t already, try Joe Wicks, GoNoodle (especially the milkshake

song or Dino Stomp) or CosmicKids Yoga on YouTube.6: Understanding the World

Draw and label a family or friendship tree, to think about all the people you need to stay in touch with.

Freeze dinosaurs or other toys in balloons or containers, predict what might make them melt, provide a range or tools for children to try and save the toys.

Look through your window or go out to the garden to see if you can spot signs of spring and draw them in your book for me to see.Look for insects, blossom, daffodils, seedlings, nests and green leaves.

7: Expressive Arts and Design Hand craft- draw around your hand, see what you can turn it into.

Use recycled materials from around the home such as newspaper, bottle tops and empty packets to create works of art such as these flowers.

Make a musical instrument out of an old tin can.

8: Religious Education Read or watch a child friendly version of the Easter story (optional). Create an Easter garden outside using natural objects. Look for New Life, such as animals, flowers, etc.
