AFTER AFAD : VAN EARTHQUAKES (23 October - 9 November 2011)
0-6 hr :more than 1.000 personnel were deployed 0-18 days :13 tent cities were settled, 75.000 tents were distributed 175.000 citizens in 30.000 containers in Van&Erciş 141.000 portions/day in 11 soup kitchens in Van and Erciş 39th day : construction of disaster houses started 23.10.2012 : 15.341 disaster houses delivered

AFTER AFAD: SETTING STANDARDS AND CERTIFICATION ACTIVITIES FOR EFFECTIVE RESPONSE AND COORDINATION;
As the AFAD Istanbul Civil Defence Search and Rescue Brigade, we obtained the UN INSARAG accreditation with 128 positive criteria in 2012 and advanced to the international standards.
“Tentcity and Containercity Settlement and Management Standards” were set.
Setting education standards is going on.
By setting standards for disaster management, AFAD is becoming a accreditation institution.

2011 POPULATION MOVEMENTS FROM SYRIA TO TURKEY • Due to internal unrest in Syria that began in April of 2011, more than 418 thousand Syria citizens came to Turkey so far.
• For these citizens, camps including 31.515 tents and 12.008 containers were set up by Republic of Turkey Prime Ministry Disaster and Emergency Management Policy in eight cities. Moreover, all kinds of humanitarian aids are satisfied in these camps. Number of Syrians in housing centers 205.840

Two experiences:
In Van earthquake there were coordination problems within the local authority and across the local authorities, as well as with central government. AFAD had to intervene beyond what we can assume coordination and support.
Syrian Population Movement, local initiative demonstrated,
well organized administration, good coordination. AFAD’s role is more on the support and coordination.
