Welcome to The County’s Outdoor Art Gallery!

Prince Edward County, Ontario is proud to be part of a North American network of traditional rural art….Barn Quilt Trails, and to host one of the largest outdoor art gal-leries that is open 365 days a year. Come for a drive in “The County” and explore our beautiful island community.

In 1820, the Pennsylvania Dutch displayed barn stars or hex symbols on their barns, which represented a trademark of a particular farm and were signs of good fortune and luck, as well as used for aesthetics. Today barn quilts are single quilt square designs, based on a farms crops, ie. corn and beans design, family quilts, but mostly, a barn quilt is simply a design that is appealing to its owner.

Colours on a barn quilt, give another special meaning to the design.

Brown – earth, friendship & strengthBlack – protection & binding together

Purple – sacred , royalBlue – protection, peace, calmness & spirituality

Green – growth & fertilityOrange – abundance, harvest

Red – passion, charisma & creativityWhite – purity, love, the moon & energy flowing freely

Yellow – health in body & mind, the sun energy

Our trail began in 2013, with our first barn quilts painted by students at two of our local schools. Our goal was 30 barn quilts….today we have over 150 installations throughout the “County” . Prince Edward County Barn Quilt Trails will take you on a beautiful drive through our small towns and through our bucolic countryside. Be sure to stop in each town and take a walking tour of the barn quilts displayed.
