Principal’s Message

Dear Prince of Peace Families, Once again, we have another busy month here at school. We thank all of our directors and performers in advance for taking time to prac-tice and entertain the school community on April 12th. Junior girls and boys will participate in a volleyball tournament mid month. Our chess team ended last month at a tournament. We will host Intermediate W5H on the 16th, 23rd, and 30th. Please remind your children to dress in lay-ers and to bring a jacket to school so that they will be ready for warmer or cooler weather. School News Secretary’s Day Secretary's Day is on Wednesday, April 25th. We thank Mrs. Di Pietro for all that she does to keep us organized, informed and well fed on Friday afternoons!!

Musicville On April 12th, our school will be hosting an evening performance entitled, “Musicville”. Volunteer per-formers have been rehearsing for several months dur-ing lunch recesses and after school. We also thank our parent council for supporting portions of this activity financially. Special thanks to the teachers who worked tirelessly building and preparing both props and chil-dren. Girls and Boys Chess Congratulations to our girls’ team who placed second at the tournament on March 26th. Many of the girls will move on to the City Finals on April 6/18. Our boys team was also very successful and moving on to the City Finals! We thank both our coaches! Nutrition Program In order to ensure that we are aware of any food aller-gies, we request that all health forms be returned. We thank all families for their generous donations each month. We ask for parents to contribute if they have not done so this term. We could not sustain this ser -vice without your contributions!! Thank you! Reminders: Please make sure that clothing items are labeled

with children’s names. We have a surplus of items in our Lost and Found box.

Please do not stop and get out of your car within our bus loading zones (front loop). Thank you!

Self Regulation

*Help the child become self-aware. This can be achieved by helping a child to “become aware of what it feels like to be calmly focused and alert and what it feels like to be hypo- or hyper-aroused.” You can have a discussion with children about how their body feels when they are calm and how their body feels when they are hypo/hyper alert. *Teach children what they need to do to return to a feel-ing of calm and alert. Brainstorm about what children can do to feel calm e.g. read a book, take a nap, get a drink of water, colour, talk to a friend etc. This may require some reminders e.g. “remember we had a conversation about the kinds of things you can do to help yourself calm down. Can you think of any of those things now?” You can also discuss what situations children may need to avoid or limit in order to reduce their level of stress. *Develop a positive relationship with your child or stu-dent. “Parents and Teachers have a powerful role to play in helping to regulate the arousal and recovery of students. It’s important that teachers remain calm, keep a warm sense of humour, and stay connected with each student.”

*Teach strategies to self-regulate. Teaching and

practicing self regulation strategies during the day would be very helpful. Introduce and practice mind-fulness, deep breathing and prayer on a regular ba-sis.

Guidance Corner Happy Easter to you and your family! I encourage you to help your children to live out their faith by finding ways to serve others. It is in recognizing the needs of others that we build empathy and strong relationships with those around us.

Intermediate students will be starting Career Explorations to help build understanding and awareness of varie-ty of occupations from each of the Pathways: Apprenticeship, College, Community Living, University and Workplace. Skills Ontario will be finishing up classroom presentations by mid-April, sharing opportunities that can be found in the Skilled Trades and Technologies. We will planning research projects on a career of choice in the coming weeks. TCDSB high schools continue to offer programs that honour each Pathway and provide many experiential opportunities that allow students to be successful, regardless of the Pathway they choose. Junior students have access to an electronic portfolio on http://www.myblueprint.ca called All About Me, and can record and reflect on aspects of self-awareness, goal-setting, experiential learning and classroom learning. Introducing students early in their school career to the process of developing a personal portfolio helps them reflect on their strengths and interests as learners as they prepare for transitions from grade to grade. I have included a link to the MOE policy document: Creating Pathways to Success: http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/document/policy/cps/CreatingPathwaysSuccess.pdf for your interest.
