Kanui te Mihi Kia Koutou - Greetings to our students, parents, caregivers and wider community

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT Senior students are now almost at the halfway point for their NCEA programmes for 2013. The Deans are calling up students to check on their progress and the number of credits they have achieved so far. I encourage parents to take the time to have the same conversations and to revisit the goals discussed in the LPP meetings held earlier this year. Deans are able to provide updated NCEA records of learning on request by students or parents and caregivers.

SCHOOL CULTURE Term 2 is always a time of extra school activities for students. Cultural Week will be held soon with a theme of celebrating Pacific Island Culture. The highlight will once more undoubtedly be Wearable Arts Competition at which we see the amazing creative talents of our students on display.

Towards the end of the term we will also celebrate Matariki and Maori Language Week. This will culminate in the annual house Kapa Haka competition. It is hoped to this year get our local primary schools involved in this with the potential for a mass multi school Haka on the Friday.

SCHOOL BALL And of course a highlight for many senior students will be the School Ball which will be held at the Pulman Hotel in Auckland City on the night of June 22nd. A special occasion to look forward to.

TEACHER ONLY DAY The school will be closed for a Teacher Only Day on Friday June 7th on which staff will undergo training for a new Performance Management System that will meet the revised criteria and requirements set by the Teachers Council of New Zealand.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES With only four nominations in by the closing date, we were not required to hold an election, so my congratulations to the four members elected unopposed. STAFF RETIREMENT Our much valued Deputy Principal, Miss Anslie Ranson, has announced that she will be retiring from teaching at the end of Term 2. Anslie is one of our longest serving staff members with over 35 years of service to Waiuku College, much of that time in a variety of leadership positions. We will be having a farewell assembly for her in the last week of term and a special function on the afternoon of the last Friday of term as well.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS We have officially welcomed our first students from Thailand with three boys starting in Year 9 and 10 this term. We also have our first student from China and are expecting a number more in Term 3. My thanks to the new homestay families who have come on board.

Mrs Ulrike Masina has started this term as our new Homestay Coordinator after the retirement last term of Mrs Sandra Sitton.

NEW NETBALL SEASON My thanks to the Waiuku Netball Centre for the invitation to be a part of the opening day celebrations recently. It was a stunning day and a big turnout to once again celebrate a new season for one of our strongest and most well organised sporting codes in Waiuku.

As in the past, the college has an impressive contingent of 16 teams taking part and we look forward in particular to our Gold team challenging for top honours at the end of the season.

Both our Gold and Silver teams are travelling overseas in July to a tournament in Australia and we are very grateful for the support and assistance that we have had with their fundraising.

GEOGRAPHY TRIPS CONT. was still closed). The majority of students made it all the way to the top of the Red Crater, along the way seeing the features that we had been learning about in class since the start of the year. Not so bright and not so early on the third day we took a more gentle stroll to see the Taranaki Falls where the students put their field sketching skills to good use. Then we stopped at various locations as we travelled up the Ohakune Mountain Road to the Turoa Ski field so students could gather data on the height of plants to study the effect on altitude on vegetation. That evening a trip to the hot pools at Tokaanu helped to ease some of our aches and pains.

Finally, during the first week of this term, it was the Yr12’s turn. The Level 2 students visited the dunes at Port Waikato to gather data on plant succession and to practice their surveying skills. Although we had to dodge the showers we managed to complete all of our tasks and get in a little bit of fossil hunting along the way. We stayed overnight at the Port Waikato school camp before heading through the limestone downs to the Nikau Cave. Whereas the Yr13s went over a hill, the YR12s got to go under one! The cave is 1km long and we crawled, slithered, walked and climbed our way along the stream way seeing a vast amount of stalagmites, stalactites, columns, curtains and straws. Once we were in the deepest part of the cave we all covered our torches and the roof lit up like the night sky, with lights if hundreds of glow worms; magical!

A big thank you to all of the students and staff who helped to make this year’s fieldtrips such a success.

MATHS IS X-CITING! Update from Mrs Everitt in the Maths department:

As a department we are busy with assessments this term and it would be good to have family support. All students require a calculator. NZQA regulations do not allow phones to be used and this policy will be followed in all Maths assessments.

Both Year 9 and Year 10 students will be sitting a common assessment next week on either the 29th, 30th or 31st May. The Year 9 students will be assessed on Number, Measure-ment, Geometry and Algebra. The Year 10 students on Measurement, Geometry, Algebra and Statistics.

If your child is unable to attend on the day, they will sit the assessment their first day back at school.

Year 11Mat will have their next internal worth 4 credits in Week 6 on the 13th and 14th June. This assessment is on Number, which includes things like percentages and fractions. Year 11Maa are practising for their geometry external and will have their next internal at the end of the term.

Year 12Mat will have their next internal worth 4 credits in Week 5 over two days. The assessment is a Statistics one and covers seven points from writing a question through to a conclusion. All seven parts must be addressed in order to achieve. Year 12Maa have an internal worth 2 credits on Systems of equations also in Week 5 on the 6th June.

Year 13Mas will have their third internal in Week 5 also. They are given a resource sheet the week before so that they can do some research to help support their analysis in the test. Year 13Mac are grappling with the integration external where success and understanding only come with practise.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me. The easiest method is probably e-mail, otherwise leave a message at the office and I will get in touch.

My e-mail is [email protected]

GEOGRAPHY STUDENTS GET OUT & ABOUT Field trips are to Geography what practical sessions are to the sciences and tech subjects; they bring the subject to life. Over the past couple of months the Geography department have been out and about with all three senior groups.

At the end of March, we kicked off with the Yr11 trip around the Manukau Harbour. The students have been studying the various uses people make of the harbour and its catchment area and exploring the question of whether those uses are sustainable. We visited various sites including the Mangere Waste Water Treatment Plant where the delightful odour left a lasting impression! The students are pictured at the Waitakere Ranges Visitor Centre where they learnt about the how the ranges are used today.

The very next week we were off again with the Yr13 students. We travelled down to Tongariro National Park to explore the area as part of the students’ studies of inter-acting natural processes in a New Zealand environment and to gather data for an important research assessment. We drove down on the Monday and bright and early the next morning we set off with a team of three guides to conquer Mt. Tongariro (We were unable to do the full crossing as it

CAREERS NEWS VISITORS TO WAIUKU COLLEGE: Wednesday afternoon talks in the Careers Centre coincide with the seniors ‘Free Period’ and are an excellent source of relevant information to senior students. We would encourage parents and caregivers to get their seniors to check the notices and attend as many career events as possible. Parents and Caregivers are also, always welcome.

This term our first presentation was from Canterbury University. Then in Week 2, ex-pupil Kael Roberts from Futureintech addressed several classes and also gave a presentation about his work in the Careers Centre. This week we are pleased to host ‘ultimit’ ESITO, Wednesday period 5. They will be discussing careers in the Electricity Supply Industry (Energy Sector).

Next week Lincoln University will present on Thursday 30 May at lunchtime in the Careers Centre, starting at 1.30pm. Anyone interested in going to Lincoln University should be at this presentation, as Lincoln is not able to attend our Career Expo on 17 June.

On Thursday 6 June (again at lunchtime) MIT will be available to discuss course planning/ focus groups/ scholarships with students in the Careers Centre.

TRIPS OUT: Last Friday a keen group of students boarded a bus at 7.20am to travel down to the Waikato University Open Day. Good time was made, and with a slight detour, we managed to get a glimpse of the ‘Chiefs’ practising on the way! Everyone enjoyed the day out and there were several sleepy nodding heads on the return trip. At the same time another nine students headed off to the MIT Engineering/ Trades and Primary Industries Experience Days at Manukau.

This week we have groups attending MIT Experience Days for Nursing, Shipping/Freight/Logistics, and Creative Arts.

The last Experience Day in June, is for Early Childhood Education and we have had an overwhelming response to this.

NEWS FROM THE UNIVERSITIES: Applications for several universities will be all on-line this year. On-line applications have already opened for the University of Auckland and Waikato University. Enrol-ment applications must be completed before university scholarships can be applied for. It is a good idea to apply for more than one university, and at least three under-graduate degree programmes. It is much easier to turn down an offer from a university than to be in the unfortunate position of applying late to a second university because you didn’t get accepted by your first choice.

WATCH TV FOR HOMEWORK I’m pleased to let you know that a brand-new series of Just the Job, the TV show for career-seekers and career-changers started airing on TV2 on Saturday 18th May at 5.00pm. Programmes air twice on TV2.

The first outing is at 5pm on Saturdays and a repeat of the same episode is at 9.30am the following Saturday morning. Please also check out the interactive web-site, www.justthejob.co.nz to view all their careers online.

ABSENCES A friendly reminder that if your student is not coming in to school, to please phone the absences line and leave a message giving the students name and the reason for their non-attendance. Should you call outside school hours, a message can be left on the after-hours line. If you are unable to make a call, please send a note the day they return to school.

STAGE CHALLENGE Stage Challenge is on 25th June at Claudelands, Hamilton. The Waiuku College Stage Challenge team has been working hard choreographing and rehearsing their entry.

Students in Year 11, 12 and 13 earn Dance credits as part of their work in Stage Challenge, as well as performing to a massive audience and having a great day out with other schools.

Students are on the hunt for 50s style full skirts. If you can help, please contact the school office and leave a message for Ms Till.

DRAMA Drama students have been busy getting ready for their public performance assessments this term. Students are using these public performances as a fundraiser for their trip to France in 2014. There is also a Quiz night fund-raiser. We have Year 10s performing their own devised works.
