Principal’s Message Friday 23 August 2013 Dear Families and Friends This Wednesday we will hold our mid-year High Achievers Assembly where students from all levels who have demonstrat- ed consistent academic excellence in Semester One will be acknowledged with Principal Awards. This is always a signifi- cant occasion for our school as it acknowledges those who have disnguished themselves as learners. We all know that it is important to acknowledge all kinds of achievement throughout the year - and this occurs in Sports, the Arts, Leadership and parcipaon in the many events of the school year. Wednesday's Assembly is about the heart of the work of educa- on and those who excel in it. It is about those students who are outstanding learners, who work hard and use their skills and talents to their opmum. But it is not just about them. It is about all learners at our school - students and teachers. Research reported on in the Age on Wednesday last week documents evidence of the significance of academic achieve- ment for all students in a school. Research by the Naonal Centre of Vocaonal Educaon Research found that all stu- dents benefited in terms of results and achievement ’at schools with strong academic records’. Professor Stephen Lamb from Melbourne University said the results of this research endorsed previous findings and that ‘schools that emphasised academic achievements across all year levels raise the standards for all their students.’ The list of the Semester One High achievers will be published in the next edion of the Lantern. On Wednesday evening the annual Music Showcase was presented by the Music staff and students. It was an outstand- ing, rousing performance of diverse and exceponal musical talent. Highlights included the inaugural performance of the guitar ensemble, wonderful solo performances both vocal and instrumental, two glimpses of The Sound of Music - coming up the week aſter next so make sure you get your ckets - a breathtaking performance from the Concepta Singers and a srring finale of Game of Thrones from the ever-growing Symphonic Band. The show was a credit to the students - in- cluding many CBC boys - and their dedicated and talented teachers. This week also brings the always-ancipated Science Expo. Good wishes to all involved and I hope to see many of you there exploring Science with the year 10s. The Volleyballers are also in acon at MSAC this week and may they match the great results of the Soccer team last week. Good wishes to you all. Prayer

A prayer for Spring

As the earth once again turns to face the sun we rejoice in this season of spring. We give thanks, O God, that each day grows longer in light and that the earth has been liberated from the grip of winter. We remember the resurrection of Your Son Jesus from the depths of death’s decay in the tomb, we lift our hearts to You in gratitude. We thank You for the gift of a day and all the graces it holds. We ask for the grace, O God, to live in a new way. Grant us fresh dreams and new visions. May this day come upon us like Spring herself, so that our hearts may be filled with hope. May we thus taste more deeply the joys of simply being alive. May we find the countless hidden treasures that You have scattered throughout this day and season! May Your peace rest upon all the members of the earthen family with whom You have made us one.

Amen

Student Wellbeing

Help your daughter love learning and improve motivation to study

If you want your child to be a fabulous student, don’t limit her learning to the classroom. The skills she's learning there are crucial to her intellectual and social growth, but she also needs your help to open up the world of ideas. Her renewed excitement in discovery will transfer to her schoolwork, so you'll boost her academic achievement too!

1. Fill your daughter's world with reading. Establish a family reading time when everyone reads his or her own book. Demonstrate how important reading is to you by filling your home with printed materials: novels, newspapers, even posters and placemats with words on them.

2. Encourage her to express her opinion, talk about her feelings, and make choices. She can pick out a side dish to go with dinner and select her own extracurricular activities. Ask for her input on family decisions, and show that you value it.

3. Show enthusiasm for your daughter's interests and encourage her to explore subjects that fascinate her. If she's interested in horses, offer her stories about riding or challenge her to find five facts about horses.

4. Provide her with opportunities that support different kinds of learning styles — from listening and visual learning to sorting and sequencing. Supplies that encourage open-ended engagement such as art and craft things, puzzles, board games, jewellery making kits or cameras. She'll need lots of unstructured time to explore them.

5. Point out the new things you learn with enthusiasm. Discuss the different ways you find new information, whether you're looking for gardening tips on the Internet or taking a night class in German literature.

6. Ask about what she's learning in school, not about her grades or test scores. Have her teach you what she learned in school today — putting the lesson into her own words will help her retain what he learned.

7. Help your daughter organize her school papers and assignments so she feels in control of her work. If her task seems too daunting, she'll spend more time worrying than learning. Check in with her regularly to make sure she's not feeling overloaded.

8. Celebrate achievements, no matter how small. Completing an assignment or a SAC calls for a special treat; finishing a task might allow your daughter an hour of video games or Facebook time. You'll offer positive reinforcement that will inspire her to keep learning and challenging herself.

9. Focus on strengths, encouraging developing talents. Even if she didn't ace her math test, she may have written a good poem in English. In addition to a workbook for math practice, give her a writing journal.

Turn everyday events into learning opportunities. Encourage her to explore the world around her, asking questions and making connections.

World Youth Day ...Rio De Janeiro

Hi there! I'm Isabel Lambrou, a proud year 10 student from Kostka 3 who had the pleasure of traveling to Rio De Janeiro in Brazil to attend the 14th World Youth Day gathering since 1984. Before I go into more detail about my trip, I'm going to give you some background information about it. In 1984 Pope John Paul II initiated this tradition by inviting young Catholics from around the world to celebrate the continuation of the Catholic faith in the hopes to strengthen their beliefs. In the beginning roughly 300,000 people attended in Rome, in Vatican City, but nearly 30 years later, in Rio De Janeiro 3.7 million people attended to see his holiness Pope Francis. Of that 3.7 million, myself and 70 other young Victorians were included. We all travelled to Brazil in an eager group, catching a 6 am flight on July 20th. Half asleep we boarded the plane, completely unaware of what was to come and alt-hough that freaked me out just a little bit, the fact that I was going to Brazil made it all the more exciting. So, we landed at roughly 6 in the morning on a 25 degree day, jet lagged but ready for the adventure to come. We all had no idea what we were doing because frankly we were just so tired, we got onto the bus and drove to the hotel. (On Copacabana beach mind you!) Showered, changed and 5 minutes later we were out the doors and lost in the beautiful streets of Brazil trying to find a church for our first mass there. When we finally arrived, our group was warmly wel-comed like celebrities! We sat through a moving mass, one I couldn't understand a word of because it was in Portuguese but still, it was the most incredible mass I've ever been to. We reached the homily and I couldn't help but cry. It might have been exhaustion, it might have been the heat or it simply might have been the people and atmosphere in the church. They all started clapping when the music started to play and I remember the Priest walking off the altar and into the middle of our group, looking each one of us directly in the eye. As we were leaving, we were asked for photos with people in the church that attended regularly. We were given hugs and kisses and if only I knew, that was just the begin-ning... On the 3rd day we began to attend Catechesis, which was a 3 1/2 hour of insight into the Catholic Church and a speech said by a Priest (in English). Afterwards, they would be open to being asked questions about the issues that they dis-cussed and quite honestly, some of the controversial questions raised made those mornings a whole lot more inter-esting! We spent most of our nights listening to musical perfor-mances and attending masses on the stunning and sandy Copacabana Beach which was sometimes cold, but always surprising. I remember one night, just out of the blue, in the middle of tens of thousands of people, a circle started to form, it just kept expanding and expanding until I was holding hands with two complete strangers and attempting to sing along using only phonetics! Another eventful night on Copacabana, was when I slept there, along with 3 mil-lion other "pilgrims". Well, slept is an overstatement... There was no sleep had because at 4am I distinctly remem-ber dancing to some samba music with the rest of my group!

World Youth Day ...Rio De Janeiro (cont’d)

Now, how did I receive the privilege? This once in a lifetime opportunity? Well, I honestly jumped at the chance. I be-lieve that in high school, it is ridiculously important to put your hand up for EVERYTHING! Keep yourself busy because you never know, at one point you might find yourself on a 747 Qantas double decker jet on your way to Brazil. I wrote this speech in one of my old notebooks that I hadn't opened for at least a year. Intrigued, I flicked through it to see what my 14 year old self had to say... Not a lot, mind you but then there it was, my bucket list and after reading many ridiculous things on it such as "start exercising daily", then I saw it... Number 42, travel to Rio De Janeiro. You can only imagine what I wish I could tell myself then! Of course while we were in Brazil we had to do some touristy things, like, go to Sugar Loaf (a large mountain in Guanaba-ra Bay that overlooks almost all of Rio) and seeing the awe inspiring sight that is. Christ the Redeemer, or, as I like to call him, Jesus on a hill! No words can describe how I felt looking up at such an iconic figure, honestly none, you'll have to see it to feel it. Put it on your bucket list, I promise you won't be disappointed! All I can say is, all I want you to know is, make that effort, put your hand up for things and be ready for anything because the last thing I expected was to see Pope Francis, meet incredible people and have the time of my life, in Rio.

For the past 14 years, Prahran and St Kilda Police Stations have conducted a yearly memorial service to remember Ser-geant Gary Silk and Senior Constable Rod Miller who were murdered in 1998 whilst on duty together in Moorabbin. This year marks the 15th anniversary since their deaths.

The Senior Sergeant of the station, S/Sgt Dermot Avon, suggested that in upcoming years, the service will include mem-bers of the local community. Representatives from two of the local schools (one being from Prahran, the other from St Kilda) will also be involved in the service in future years, and it was in this capacity that we were invited to the service this year.

Presentation College Windsor has a very positive association with Prahran Police and we were honoured to be part of this commemorative service on Friday 17 August 2013.

Fit 2 Drive

Stonnington Council has a vigilant and committed team who visit local schools each year. The Year 11 Fit 2 Drive course is an extension of the Year 10 Keys Please sessions. A couple of weeks ago we benefitted from their experience and the hard-hitting case studies shared as a warning.

Remaining safe, making sensible choices, as well as some practical techniques for saying “No,” combined to ensure this solid afternoon of group work and activities worthwhile. The police and fire brigade shared their expertise and advice, all of which has been beneficial.

Thank you, Fit 2 Drive Team.
