JUNIOR STATE SURF LIFE SAVING CHAMPIONSHIPS
Major School Priorities This year the school continues our work on spelling One element of our spelling program is the Speech Sound Pics (SSP) resource We introduced this resource into our school in 2017 as it provides a sequential and consistent approach for spelling across 40 classes from Prep to Year 6 The SSP code mapping technique helps our students to break up words into visu-al parts with specific sounds Over time students learn that letter combinations can represent different sounds Students are able to consider varying options before selecting the correct way to spell a particular sound Phonemic Awareness is embedded into all aspects of SSP including listening to each speech sound in words to encode and decode With consistent daily prac-tice students will improve their reading fluency spelling and writing compre-hension and vocabulary knowledge This year we are also reflecting upon the teaching of writing This involves stu-dents free writing daily about a given topic in their Work On Writing (WOW) journals This will help students build their writing stamina and improve their skill level for future years when they need to complete written assignments or essays Parents are most welcome to ask teachers about our spelling and writing priori-ties We value your feedback and support Promoting School Attendance Many researchers believe that higher student attendance at school is associated on average with higher student achieve-ment Naturally it seems logical that maximising your time at school would in-crease your learning Your child can improve their potential when they go to school regularly Con-sistency provides them with the opportunity to learn make friends be happier and have a brighter future Under Queensland law we must make sure our school-age children are enrolled and attend school every day unless they have a reasonable excuse Illness doing work experience competing in a school sporting event or going on a school excursion are reasonable excuses for being absent from school

We ask families to avoid keeping their child away from school for birthdays shopping visiting family and friends sleeping in looking after other children or minor check-ups We understand that medical or other health ap-pointments can not be avoided at times At Mountain Creek SS we strive to have better than 95 attendance across the school The table below shows current progress for our year levels Congratulations to our Preps and Year 1 who are setting the highest attend-ance standards in the school
Our overall attendance is regularly recognised as being positive in comparison to all other Sunshine Coast schools Last year over 470 students had attendance rates higher than 95 with a further 390 above 90 Unfortunately we do have about 70 students so far this year who have already been absent for more than 6 days therefore their attendance is below 85 Naturally these students have missed important learning time and it may prove difficult for them to catch up Staff are aware that illness does occur but we do encourage all families to maximise time at school to improve learning for everyone We have fantastic standards at the school due to strong family values and thank all families helping to support students and their learning Rob Van den Heuvel Principal

MR ErsquoS ECO NEWS
The word has spread quickly about the dangers of plastic in our environments and we need to take responsibility for its proper disposal so that it does not affect our pristine waterways There are approximately 2 billion plastic water bottles purchased each year and less than 10 are recycled Our tap water is much cheaper and is as good as or better than most bottled products As of July this year plastic shopping bags will be banned and shoppers will need to
take responsibility to provide their own reusable bags The school community has been
active in collecting any plastics blown around the grounds by the recent storms The
most common item collected by the Clean-up Crew has been the plastic wrapping on the outside of popper straws
They are light and can be blown into gardens and waterways if we are not careful with their disposal Keep your
eyes peeled and try to avoid purchasing one-use plastics

NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION AGAINST BULLYING AND VIOLENCE
This year Mountain Creek State School will again acknowledge the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence This initia-tive held on Friday 16 March 2018 has been running for the last 8 years and is an important day for our school The national definition of bullying for Australian schools says
Bullying is an ongoing misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal physical andor social behaviour that causes physical andor psychological harm It can in-volve an individual or a group misusing their power over one or more persons Bullying can happen in person or online and it can be obvious (overt) or hidden (covert)
Bullying of any form or for any reason can have long-term effects on those involved including bystanders Single incidents and conflict or fights between equals whether in person or online are not defined as bullying Behaviours that do not constitute bullying include
mutual arguments and disagreements (where there is no power imbalance) not liking someone or a single act of social rejection one-off acts of meanness or spite isolated incidents of aggression intimidation or violence
However these conflicts still need to be addressed and resolved At our school we encourage our students to use the High 5 strate-gy to resolve conflicts in the classroom and playground The steps of the High-5 Strategy include
1 Ignore 2 Talk Friendly 3 Walk Away 4 Talk Firmly 5 Report
If you would like more valuable information please visit the Bully-ing No Way website Here you will find important resources re-garding this issue including a lsquoBullying is NEVER OKrsquo video which will help students learn what bullying is and what to do if they are bullied Have a great week Louise Blanch Guidance Officer
