Dear DHS Parents and Guardians, As we start to feel the change in the weather and see the first school progress report we know that the fall season has truly arrived. We are already off to a great year with Homecoming celebrations, athletic and extracurricular competitions, music performances, and art exhibitions. A big THANK YOU! to each of you for everything you did to make our Homecoming celebrations fun and safe events for our stu- dents. Homecoming is one of my favorite times of the year, as it allows our students to come together to show their school spirit during the school day and after school activities. This year was no different, as I was extremely impressed by our students’ spirit that was evident by our decorated hallways, participation in spirit dress-up days, pep rally performances, and large turn-out at the Home- coming game and dance. I hope your student had as much fun as I did! October brings many opportunities for students and parents to participate in school activities. Please join us for our first Fall Play, 44 Plays for 44 Presidents from October 5-8 in the Studio Theatre (please check the DHS calendar for specific times each day). For your musical pleasure, our band and orchestra will be performing on October 20 and 27, respectively. In athletics, many of our teams are celebrating Senior Night during the month of October, while also competing in tournaments and working towards state playoffs. Please see our athletics schedule on the DHS website for sport by sport details. On the academic front, our students are participating in science labs, classroom discussions, and even field trips that keep them interested and engaged in their classes. On October 19 th and 20 th our freshman and junior students will be participating in the PSAT and ACT tests, respectively. These tests will be utilized by our teachers to help inform curriculum and instruction decisions and sup- ports that ensure our students’ growth and success at DHS and beyond. Khan academy (khanacademy.org) provides excellent re- sources for personalized practice and feedback that may be beneficial for these tests, but more importantly for developing and mas- tering knowledge and skills for the classroom. Lastly, if you haven’t joined a parent organization yet, now is the time! Please consider getting involved with these groups that sup- port you- the parents and guardians, as well as our students. For parent specific events, please check our school calendar for meet- ing dates and events for the Deerfield Parent Network, Booster Club, Friends of the Arts, and PTO. I look forward to seeing you at the different events throughout October! Kind regards, Kathryn Anderson Principal’s Corner Warrior E-News October, 2016 KATHRYN ANDERSON, Principal

Dear DHS Parents and Guardians,

As we start to feel the change in the weather and see the first school progress report we know that the fall season has truly arrived.

We are already off to a great year with Homecoming celebrations, athletic and extracurricular competitions, music performances,

and art exhibitions.

A big THANK YOU! to each of you for everything you did to make our Homecoming celebrations fun and safe events for our stu-

dents. Homecoming is one of my favorite times of the year, as it allows our students to come together to show their school spirit

during the school day and after school activities. This year was no different, as I was extremely impressed by our students’ spirit that

was evident by our decorated hallways, participation in spirit dress-up days, pep rally performances, and large turn-out at the Home-

coming game and dance. I hope your student had as much fun as I did!

October brings many opportunities for students and parents to participate in school activities. Please join us for our first Fall Play, 44

Plays for 44 Presidents from October 5-8 in the Studio Theatre (please check the DHS calendar for specific times each day). For

your musical pleasure, our band and orchestra will be performing on October 20 and 27, respectively. In athletics, many of our

teams are celebrating Senior Night during the month of October, while also competing in tournaments and working towards state

playoffs. Please see our athletics schedule on the DHS website for sport by sport details.

On the academic front, our students are participating in science labs, classroom discussions, and even field trips that keep them

interested and engaged in their classes. On October 19th and 20th our freshman and junior students will be participating in the PSAT

and ACT tests, respectively. These tests will be utilized by our teachers to help inform curriculum and instruction decisions and sup-

ports that ensure our students’ growth and success at DHS and beyond. Khan academy (khanacademy.org) provides excellent re-

sources for personalized practice and feedback that may be beneficial for these tests, but more importantly for developing and mas-

tering knowledge and skills for the classroom.

Lastly, if you haven’t joined a parent organization yet, now is the time! Please consider getting involved with these groups that sup-

port you- the parents and guardians, as well as our students. For parent specific events, please check our school calendar for meet-

ing dates and events for the Deerfield Parent Network, Booster Club, Friends of the Arts, and PTO.

I look forward to seeing you at the different events throughout October!

Booster Club congratulates our Fall 2016 Warrior Athletes and wishes them good luck in their

upcoming playoffs! The best way to support student athletes is to join Booster Club. We fund a

number of coaches’ requests for equipment and facilities improvements each year. Booster Club

pays for concussion testing for all student athletes, CSL Leadership Conference attendance,

senior scholarships and many other items. We have recently donated training room equipment,

golf rain suits, scoreboard upgrades in our new pool and gym, a gymnastics floor, wind screens

for the tennis courts, and tents for the cross country teams. Booster Club also raised funds to pay

for half the cost of the synthetic turf surface on Adams Field!! Most of our funding comes

through membership dues and Warrior Wear sales. All of our membership categories include a

Family Athletic Pass, which provides admission for parents and pre-high school age children to

attend all regular season home contests. The Family Athletic Pass is also good for a $3 discount

on a dinner orders at Il Forno (dine-in or carryout). Please visit

https://www.memberplanet.com/dhsboosterclub to purchase your membership.

If you are a local business owner, we offer a number of exciting advertising / sponsorship

opportunities. Booster Club is the only approved outlet for advertising on the DHS campus.

Our sponsorship programs include opportunities to advertise your business on our flexible fence

sign panels (used for crowd control and outfield fencing on our athletic fields), 55” video screens

in the athletic wing, and digital scoreboards. Please contact Brad Emalfarb

([email protected]) for more information.

We are still looking for volunteers to assist with Warrior Wear sales or on our fundraising,

communications, and membership committees. If you are interested in helping in any of these

areas, please contact us at [email protected]

Attend one of our meetings – generally held on the first Tuesday of every month at 7:00 pm in

Room A100 – and see what Booster Club is all about! Our next meeting is scheduled for

Tuesday, October 4th.

DHS PTO NEWS

PTO Membership

It is not too late to join the PTO. Please visit our website at dhspto.org We rely on

membership fees to provide college scholarships to our seniors, and to fund

requests from various school departments. Unfortunately, we are way behind in

our enrollment goal this year, and as a result, our means to support our DHS

community is in jeopardy. See below for just one example of how the funds

raised help our school.

Thank you so much for all of the fund raising that you do to make our wonderful PTO gifts

possible! While the budget provides for our basic needs, the gifts from the PTO allow us to

enrich classroom experiences for students in our classroom. For example, students in Freshman

Physics were VERY excited when we set the new Snap Circuit kits out on the lab tables instead of

the traditional wire, bulbs, and switches used for the past ten years. The gifts do make a

difference for your children.
