Windsor’s Cross Country Team had a great season. We had a team of close to 40 athletes this year, and were able to field teams in every division.

Some of the many highlights from the season included the trip to Sechelt, where Windsor set up a cheering section near the finish line, to the zone finals in Squamish where the team competed on a twisty, muddy course in the torrential rain. The biggest highlight of the season was all the great sportsmanship shown by the team, cheering on teammates as well as other schools.

The Jr and Sr. Boys teams both dominated this year, winning both the league trophy and zone championship for their respective divisions. This is the first time in the last 10 years that a school has won both the Jr. and Sr. Boys Divisions in the same year!

Both teams later competed in Kelowna at the provincials with the Jr. Boys placing 4th overall in the province.

Secondary School Apprenticeship (SSA)

Windsor Secondary School offers Secondary School Apprenticeship (SSA) in conjunction with

the Industry Training Authority (ITA). The Secondary School Apprenticeship program is designed for those students who are currently working part-time in a trade, under a certified Journey Person, or who know of someone who might hire them to work in a trade. It is possible for students to earn up to 16 credits while in school. Four credits are assigned for every 120 hours of work completed. These hours are also counted towards the total number of hours needed to become a journeyman in their chosen trade. Trades are not what they use to be. If you are interested in seeing your child explore a hands-on trade, while in high school check out these sites: http://www.discovertradesbc.ca/ and/or www.itabc.ca

Each year, during Veterans Week, November 5-11, Canadians come together to honour the sacrifices and achievements made by Canada’s Veterans during times of both war and peace. This year, many Windsor students were involved in remembrance activities in their classes. Themes ranged from learning about battles and events to portraying the very personal side of war and peace and how it affects families and our country as a whole. Photo: Ms. Lazarova’s Textiles Classes’ Felt Poppies

Windsor's Art classes, Textiles classes, and Social Studies classes collaborated to create “The Poppy Project”: a commemorative art installation throughout the school. Portraits of unknown soldiers and large poppies, lined the halls of Windsor, each representing a soldier who fought and died throughout the two World Wars. Textiles students also

created hand-made poppies that teachers and students wore in honor of Veterans week. This Project Poppy was originally inspired by a student display at the Thiepval Memorial in the Somme region of France, that Mme. McEwen visited when she was selected as one of Canada’s top history educators to visit Canadian war sites in France as part of a teacher’s delegation sponsored by the federal government. Throughout the week, as students walked through the halls, the number of poppies grew, symbolizing the mounting death toll during these periods of war. Eventually, over 300 poppies filled the halls of Windsor, which is just a fraction of the millions affected by war.

This year has been an active year for our Council. We rose over $500 for the Terry Fox Fundraiser that was held on Sept 29th. The winning class was Mr. Minn who raised over $140.00. The council has also voted on some initiatives this year and plan on looking at a covered bike area and more spirit days. In addition they have written a letter to the administration about some ideas for the

cafeteria and vending machines. They also started a snap chat account and the Toilet Times (posted in the school washrooms) to update students on upcoming events. Student Council is hosting Holiday Week with Christmas songs at lunch on Dec 13th, ugly sweater day Dec 14th, a Christmas movie in the Dukes Den Dec 15th and on Dec 16th they will host the annual Santa’s Breakfast in the Dukes Den at

7:30am. Tickets will be on sale the week of Dec 12th. Stong’s is proudly supporting this event by donating all the food. You can also support Windsor by Online Shopping Customers who buy their regular groceries online through the stongs.com website and Stong’s will donate 4% of that total to our school if you specify that!!!

The 2016 Varsity Football team had a very successful season. At one point the Gridiron Dukes were ranked #5 in AA Provincial rankings and never dropped below honorable mention. Despite playing in the province’s toughest AA conference they still managed a third place finish with a league record of 4-2. Notable performances include a long overdue 41-26 victory over perennial powerhouse John Barsby at the Duke Dome as well as a monumental 7-0 victory against Ballenas on Vancouver Island in hurricane conditions. Post season success came in the form

Over 30 swimmers

in 2016 The 2016 season was another successful one for the Windsor Swim Team. We had our largest team to date with over 30 swimmers ranging in grade level and ability. Our coaches, John, Ximena and Cecilia did a superb job of whipping the team into shape in preparation for Zones on October 30th and guiding beginning swimmers in their quest to improve. Several of our swimmers swam at the Regional Championships at UBC and moved on to qualify for Provincials in Kamloops. Unfortunately, due to the distance of this meet, few qualifiers will

actually be competing for Provincial standings. A special shout out goes to Aaron Brandys (Grade 8) who will be attending and is seeking his first Provincial title. Best of luck Aaron and congratulations to all of our swimmers and coaches for another great season! In a sad turn of events, the Synchronized Swimming Provincials were cancelled this year. This year had been a great turn out for the team, so this was a particularly disappointing blow. Coaches Isabelle Vaux and June Reisner were dedicated and made sure that the team was well prepared, but will now have to defer all the new skills developed to next year. We were particularly impressed to have a team of 8 this year and hope that next year the team will get even bigger! We had a number of COMPLETE BEGINNERS in the water, and by the end of the training season, they were synchro pros. Thank you for a great (albeit disappointing) season!

How to get better grades in school

An evening for parents and students Wednesday, January 11, 2017

7-8:30pm

It was another busy fall season of athletics at Windsor. This fall season there were 12 teams competing in a variety of sports. The junior girls volleyball team finished with a 4-1 regular season record and attended 4 tournaments. The season ended in a tough loss to Carson in the quarterfinals of the North Shore playoffs. The juvenile gold volleyball went to two tournaments and boasted a 4 win 2 loss league standing. The team lost in their quarter final matchup. The juvenile green team also attended 2 tournaments and finished the season with a 1 win -5 loss record. The bantam gold

team opened the season with 5 straight league wins but ended the season on a tough 4 game losing streak to finish with 5 wins and 4 losses, just missing out on a top 4 finish. The bantam green team won 2 league games and lost 7, but worked hard and developed all year. The Boys soccer program had a strong season with the senior boys’ team finishing third in the league with 6 wins to only 2 losses during the regular season. The team scored an impressive 19 goals while only allowing 4. They entered the playoffs on a high and defeated Whistler in a hard fought

elimination game. The junior boys team also enjoyed a successful season, finishing 2nd in the regular season but losing a heartbreaking shootout in the semi-finals. The future is bright for the boys soccer program. This year Windsor was able to field a senior field hockey team. The team was composed of players in grade 8-12. It was a tough task to qualify out of the league as the other two teams in our zone finished 1st and 3rd at the BC championships. The team finished with a 1 win and 3 loss season but the players should be proud of their efforts this year.

The Winter Season is now underway. This year Windsor will have 8 basketball teams along with gymnastics, ski/snowboard and wrestling teams. The basketball players have begun games while the other athletes will begin their competition in the new year. Information for spring sports will be posted in February. The spring sports that may be offered this year are: senior/junior girls soccer, senior/junior ultimate, golf, track & field, tennis, badminton, mountain biking, girls rugby, boys rugby, boys volleyball and ice hockey.

On September 30th, National Orange Shirt Day, Windsor Students came together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope, to recognize the harm done to generations of children by the Residential School System. Our Social Justice 12 class, in collaboration with our Indigenous students, visited all classes to share the history of residential schools and the significance of Orange Shirt Day.

Reconciliation and hope on Orange Shirt Day

The symbol of wearing an Orange Shirt stems from a story told by a former residential school student named Phyllis Webstad. As a six-year old girl, Phyllis had a shiny new orange shirt given to her by her grandmother, which was taken away from her on her first day of residential school. Now, Phyllis’s story and the orange shirt have become a symbol of every residential school students’ loss of identity and self-worth. The date of September 30th was chosen

nationally, because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools, and because it is an opportunity to set the stage for anti-racism and anti-bullying for the coming school year. Congratulations to all of our students who worked so hard to share this message and respect this day as a tribute to all families impacted by the Residential School System.

For the past 18 years, Ms. Linda Deminger and Ms. Nancy Deminger have been participating in a Winter Story Collaboration. Ms. N. Deminger’s Grade 12 students have been writing Winter stories for Ms. L. Deminger’s primary or intermediate classes. The stories are heart-felt, fun, and imaginative. The Grade 12 students put information that they have learned about their elementary partner into the stories. When the students at Larson receive the stories, they are both surprised and excited by what they read. The elementary students work very hard

on creating fun and detailed images. Their images truly bring the stories to life. The Grade Three students feel a sense of pride and accomplishment when they have completed their images. When the students get together at either Windsor or Larson there is an instant connection between them. The stories have created a friendship bond. The Grade 12 students are very patient with their partners and ensure that they have a good time at either school. The students look forward to reading their stories, doing an art activity, going on a tour of the school, and eating lunch

together. We have students from past years tell us that they still have their Winter stories and what a great experience it was for them. This activity has proven over the years to be very beneficial for both age groups. The students continue to learn a great deal from one another.

Windsor respectfully requests that parents not enter the parking lot of Broadview Avenue. The lot is allocated to staff and has three visitor stalls. With the ongoing renovation project, it now includes a fenced off area allocated to the general contractor and the tradesmen’s vehicles parked in the tennis courts. As you are aware, the design of the lot does not allow a “drive-through” loop and we are making this appeal in the hope that the parking lot chaos of late can be avoided. Two signs are posted at the school gate as a friendly reminder to parents. A much safer alternative is to use Lytton Street and drop students in the cul-de-sac at the end of Lytton. This entrance has a stop light on the Parkway allowing for much safer turns onto and off of this busy route.

Attendance is important There is a direct relationship between attendance and academic success in school. Also in the event of an emergency our attendance records are crucial. ALL students are reminded to check in and out at the main office if arriving late or leaving school early. Parents are reminded to call the school at 604 903-3707 to report a student absence, late arrival or early dismissal. Thanks for your cooperation.

Obu Exchange tradition continues in 2017-2018

Since 2008, Windsor Secondary and Obu Secondary High Schools (near Nagoya, Japan) have participated in a sister-high school exchange program. There have been two school exchanges to date, and our third one is happening next year!

In October 2015, the group from Obu Secondary arrived for one week of visiting, sightseeing, cultural

exchange and participation in learning. One day was spent on Grouse Mountain exploring the wilderness, and another day both Windsor and Obu students participated in an Amazing Race activity across Metro Vancouver. It was awesome!

Saying goodbye or ‘Sayonara’ to our Obu friends is always hard, but the great news is that we see them all again! The

Windsor exchange students will depart in April 2018 for a ten day excursion to Tokyo, Obu and Kyoto. It will be an amazing time seeing our new Japanese friends, attending our sister school and experiencing the wonderful culture of Japan.

If you think you might be interested in the Windsor/Obu exchange, please join us for the next one in 2017/18!
