FAREWELL AND THANK YOUThis is my fi nal newsletter of the year. I would like to thank the students, parents and staff of Esperance Senior High School for a great year. You are the reason we can all be proud of our school. I would also like to thank the special parents and community representatives who contribute in such a positive way as members of the following committees: The P&C with Michelle Handley as President, the School Board with Pene Pariagh as the Chairperson and members of the Farm Advisory Board. Thank you to the fantastic members of these committees. You make an invaluable contribution to the school and your time and efforts are greatly appreciated.

I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome the new Principal for 2020, Mr Ian Masarei, who is coming to us from Kalgoorlie-Boulder Community High School.

UPPER SCHOOL PRESENTATION EVENING The Upper School Presentation Evening at the Civic Centre last month acknowledged the achievements of year 11 and 12 award recipients and farewelled the students who have completed their school education.

The valedictory speaker for the evening was the recently retired school Principal Ms Cathy Bamblett, who presented seven points of advice to the students who are about to enter the next phase of their lives.

A huge thank you to the community representatives who attended the evening and presented awards to the students. The community support of our students in providing prizes and scholarships, taking on work-placement or work experience students, and/or supporting fundraising and other events, contributes so much towards the enrichment of the programs on offer at our school, for which we are most grateful.

The evening of the year 12s ended with a supper with parents and staff sharing in the celebrations of the end of schooling for our delightful year 12s.

CLONTARF KATANNING EXCURSION

Thirteen Esperance Clontarf students visited Katanning for a basketball carnival on the 27th and 28th of November. The boys played in good spirit and had fun. Zac Graham was named king of the camp. Malachi Riley and Robert Graham were also named in the All Star team to take on the staff at the end of the fi rst day. Thank you to Nic Munro and Joe Franzone for helping out on the camp.

TRANSITION WEEKThe year six students enrolled at the High School in 2020 had a fun and exciting day during their transition day at Esperance Senior High School over the past fortnight.

Students were taken on a quick tour of important places at the school at the start of the day, then moved on to a nearly normal high school timetable, attending a variety of classes during the day.

The day concluded with a treasure hunt search around the school, to find out about some more important places and people in the school.

Thanks to all the year six students for such a successful "first day" at High School. Thanks also to the current year seven mentors who showed the students to classes all day and helped in many other ways. Many thanks to Mr Clifton for organising the week and the classroom teachers who ran classes, and especially to Brett Landers, the 2020 Year 7 Coordinator, who also worked very hard to make each day a great experience for the visiting students.

The Follow the Dream program ended on a high note this year, with our celebration night held at the Esperance Bay Yacht Club on Tuesday the 10th of December, to acknowledge the success of our students. Several awards were presented, after which ESHS staff and students had a lovely dinner with their parents, carers and families.

GIRLS ACADEMY GRADUATION NIGHT - MONDAY 25TH NOVEMBER

This event was held at the Civic Centre and was a wonderful evening to recognise the Esperance Girls Academy and the outstanding achievements of the students.

Girls Academy students who received awards were Juanita Callow, who received the Academy's highest award, The Ricky Grace Be The Change award. Ashleigh Taylor received the Academy Ambassador award. Alidia Stack received the Imagine Senior Academic award and Eleisha-Ray Adams received the Imagine Junior Academic award.

Congratulations to all the Girls Academy students and to the staff, Anna Bonney (Program Manager) and Michelle de Lacy (Development Offi cer) for an excellent evening.

As part of the annual Celebration Night, one student is also presented the Horizon Power Scholarship. The recipient of this scholarship is provided with a bursary, which is to be used to support the student with their school expenses. Congratulations to Alidea Stack, our 2019 recipient of this scholarship.

STUDENT HEALTH AND WELLBEINGAll students have participated in the three sessions of Health and Wellbeing.

Mental Health in Schools Project has focused this year on developing the student’s understanding of positive mental health and a range of strategies to support it.

Through form classes, students received information across three sessions on – 1. Cyber safety – why is it important and what can we do to keep ourselves safe?2. Digital Footprints – what happens online stays online. The whole school was encouragedto THINK (Before you post – is it TRUE? Is it HELPFUL? Is it INSPIRING? Is it NECESSARY?Is it KIND?)3. The impact of their words – looking at the impact of online bullying and its consequences.How can students be up standers, rather than bystanders when this occurs? Where can theygo when they need help and support?

Other support for our student’s health and wellbeing has been shown through RUOK? Day, and World Kindness Day.

Our aim is to encourage a positive mindset with mental health and cyber issues. Our task has been to share with students strategies that can assist them with good choices.

LIBRARY NEWSThe library held its annual Reading Reward at lunchtime on Friday. The top 50 borrowers are invited for exclusive use of the library. Students bring their lunch and receive a “goodie bag” and juice box. This year’s top borrower was Annabelle Woodhouse in Year 7, with 117 books borrowed! Annabelle received a gift voucher from Book Box as her reward. It is interesting to note that many of the lower school certifi cate and prize winners for English (yet to be announced) are amongst the top borrowers.

Another library highlight has been the creation of the Library Book Club - we’re going to call ourselves the Southern Write Readers. Staff and students have been meeting weekly to share our love of books and reading. We are working on a logo – it will look something like this:

IGO NOVA CAMPSix of our year 10 students were very fortunate to participate in a work experience program offered by IGO. This camp included a five day trip to IGO's NOVA mine site, near Fraser Range, 160 degrees East North East of Norseman. Potential ATAR year 10 students get the opportunity to apply for this unique experience and go through a selection process. The successful candidates have then the opportunity to experience what a career in the mining industry looks like as an Engineer, Geologist, Metallurgist, Surveyor and Environmentalist. Tait Vooght-Simpson, Sammy Ryan-Galloway, Kasey Graham, Isha Cook, two students from EACS and Zaine Smith were the students selected for the 2019 camp.

Students worked alongside their mentors working 12 hour shifts and came back with a thorough understanding of what the industry looks like, not just as a mine worker but also what life on a mine site entitles. Their physical safety and mental health are highly valued.

Back home, these students presented their tasks to fellow students, special guests from the community as well as staff from IGO head office, to reflect on the value of this very special opportunity. The investment of IGO in our young generation is greatly appreciated by the students and staff at Esperance Senior High School and the wider community.

ESPERANCE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL'S EXHIBITION OF CREATIVE WORKS

The Esperance Senior High School's Exhibition of Creative Works opened on the night of November 22nd and ran from November 23rd to 28th. The exhibition was a highly successful event, being attended by almost 250 visitors during the week. The standard of student work was outstanding once again, which is a credit to all students and staff within the Design and Technology, Home Economics and The Arts departments.

There were some very positive comments in the visitors book, including, "I was moved and inspired as I walked through this exhibition. I am so proud of the kids and I hope they can see how extraordinary they are. A huge thank you to the teachers". The school band entertaining the crowd

Preparation for Upper School is underway with the Year 10 students who have

chosen the vocational pathway engaged in their respective VET Readiness

Courses. These programs include enrolment with the Certificate provider, safety

courses (including White Cards), firming up arrangements for the Work Place

Learning (WPL) component of their course. The school is very lucky to have so

many businesses in town that are prepared to give our students the opportunity to

develop their practical skills within the scope of these VET courses.

THANK YOU TO LOCAL BUSINESSES

I want to thank all of the businesses who gave the Year 10 students the chance to do Work Experience

this year. Over one hundred placements took place this semester alone; placements that offered the

students a first-hand look at careers and pathways that they could consider. Without this insight

students would not be making informed decisions about how to spend the next two years of their

schooling.

ATAR STUDENTS

The students who have chosen the ATAR pathway for next year have had

four sessions over the last two weeks that were devoted to developing their

study skills in readiness for the work – and the workload – that comes with

this pathway in Upper School. The overall aim is to have happy, satisfied

students who can look back at the end of 2021 and be pleased with their

results. The five strands that were covered were: Knowing the Rules, Your

Health, General Study Strategies, Absorbing Information and Presenting

Information. Thank you to the staff who volunteered their time to ensure that

these students start next year on the front foot.

LEGENDS REWARD DAY

It has been a pleasure to invite some students to attend a Legend’s Reward

Day at the Esperance Bay Yacht club on Wednesday 18th December. These

students have been invited on the basis of the nominations that they received

from their teachers. In turn, the teachers nominated students on the basis of

their work ethic, attitude, behaviour and the consideration and respect they

show towards others. Unfortunately only twenty students get to attend – 38

students received at least four nominations, while another 69 received at least

one nomination, which says a lot about the strength of the cohort.

IGO NOVA MINE SITE

Holly Bishop, Isha Cook, Kasey Graham, Sammy Ryan-Galloway, Zaine Smith and Tait Vooght-Simpson

spent last week at IGO NOVA’s mine site, 160 kilometres north-east of Norsemen. The opportunity to

work alongside geologists, mining engineers, metallurgists and environmental scientists gave these

students a better understanding of these careers.

SOUTHERN PORTS AUTHORITY

Students are grateful to Uli Sinnott and the staff at Southern Ports Authority for offering an insight into

the trade careers available. Kaden Brown, Harry Buttle, Riley Coates, Daewon Meng-Ung, Ben Ryl, Taj

Stewart, Jaydn Thring and Ruben Wakeham looked around the facility and spoke with staff on-site

about potential career paths.

Highlights of 2019 included Country Week and the School Ball. Well done to 31 Year 11 students who travelled to Perth in July to participate in Country Week. The Year 11 cohort was well represented in the hockey, netball, soccer, touch and volleyball teams. These students were fine representatives for the school and played their sport with the spirit associated with Country Week.

At the Ball in May, the Year 11 students dressed up to the nines and walked the red carpet with camera flashes firing. It was great to see them having a wonderful time on the dance floor. Next year promises to be just as good, perhaps even better.

Now, 2020 looms. As most past Year 12 students will attest, next year will pass in a blink of an eye. Please encourage the students to take advantage of all the opportunities that come their way and to make the most of their last year of secondary schooling. I wish them a safe holiday so they can return refreshed for their 2020 challenge.

The majority of Year 11 students made an excellent start to their upper school studies this year. At the beginning of 2019, 161 students commenced Year 11 at Esperance Senior High School. Of those, 107 students chose the Vocational Education and Training (VET) pathway and 54 students chose the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) pathway. Year 11 is a big step up from Year 10; there is study, assessments, workplace learning, homework, private study, TAFE, more study, predicted ATARs and exams. A special thanks to school staff and each student’s family who have done a great job providing support this year.
