Recently I was pleased to receive a letter from Con, a past parent informing us of the pathways which his children have taken since leaving Henley High School. The oldest two children have chosen to follow career pathways in teaching, but it was the youngest Anthony, who I was so interested to hear about. Anthony is visually impaired and struggled with his transition to high school until his attendance decreased to the point where he was no longer attending school, despite many efforts to support him. But Anthony is a fighter, after three years Anthony decided to sit the University Entrance Exam. He was successful in gaining a place in Software Engineering (Honours) and is now completing his fourth year of the course at UniSA, Mawson Lakes. The message which Con wished to pass on was that “even though you may have obstacles put in front of you with your learning path, you can refocus and achieve whatever you want”. I thank Con for sharing his families’ story with us and wish both Anthony and his sibling’s successful careers in their chosen fields. The importance of resilience, determination and a willingness to explore alternatives when the pathway ahead does not seem clear cannot be underestimated. I encourage all students to keep this in mind, especially over the next two months when researching future career and study pathways.

YEAR 10 CHILD STUDIESMs Lewis’s Year 10 Semester 1 Child Studies class have been working on a project about building resilience with children from Birth-8 years old. The purpose of this task was to design and construct a board game that would help build resilience in young people through engaging with the activities in the game.

Three outstanding students from the class were asked their opinion of the task and gave these responses;

George Hatziapostolou - “creating our own board games was a good way of teaching children how to build resilience for better development”.

Nicola Falanga -“The assignment was interactive and a great way to develop hands on skills as creating an original board game is a beneficial task both mentally and physically”.

Shaye White - “it helped me build resilience while making a game about resilience as I found it challenging and had to change some ideas throughout the process to make it work”.

6 HENLEY HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER TERM 2 | WEEK 7

STUDENT EXECUTIVEThis year’s Student Executive is a group of seven students from years 9-11. We aim to work collaboratively with the students and teachers of Henley High School to get the best outcomes possible. One of our goals is to make sure student’s voices are heard. So far this year we have created awareness of Harmony day and given activities to do in PLP. We have hosted a morning tea for all the new International students who started in 2016. At the moment our focus is on fundraising for International Scholarships through fundraisers such as donut days and sausage sizzles. Next term we plan to host some form of forum or workshop. In week nine donuts will be for sale for $3.50. We aim to have a sausage sizzle in week 3 with sausages selling for $2 each.

MEET CAMERONHello, my name is Cameron Egger, I am in year 10 and in the Lowitja sub school. My favourite subjects are Maths, Art and Design, I chose to become a student executive so that I could make a difference and voice my opinion about the school and change it for the better.

MEET AMYMy name is Amy Edgar Barcelo, I am a year 10 student in Lowitja sub-school. My passion is music, I play guitar piano, sax, clarinet and vocals. The reason I applied for Student Executive is that I believe that our school is amazing, but through this counsel, we can bridge the gap between students and teachers making school a much more enjoyable and beneficial environment. I hope to develop my organisation, communication and leadership skills.

MEET KAIHi I’m Kai. I decided to join Student Executive because I think that it is a good way to represent my fellow students and to get things done. Being in student executive since 2015 and in SVC since 2014, I have represented you all since Year 9 and have enjoyed it every day since. You might have seen me speak at assembly earlier this year and the year before – something I enjoy doing as part of my role in leadership and one of the ways that student executive communicates with the school. The thing I enjoy the most about representing you is that I get to relay your opinions and suggestions to staff and work hard to get it done to make the school a better place to be a part of.

MEET NAOMII come from the Northeast of China about 1000kms from Beijing. My name is Shengxian (Naomi) Wang and I am a Year 10 student from Lowitja sub-school. I like playing badminton, reading novels and also, I am interested in learning languages. I am on the Student Executive for Henley High School and my position is to represent international students for expressing their opinions and suggestions. There are up to 60 international students enrolled at Henley High School this year. As I am one of the international students, I would like to try my best to support the Henley High School governance processes and systems. But my aim is to help international students adapt to the new learning atmosphere better and faster. Moving to a different country is difficult sometimes and I hope my experiences will help other international students. Treating others with kindness and respect is the way I want to be treated and I make sure I demonstrate this idea whenever I interact with people. If you would like to discuss student issues with me I am available so come on over and say” hello”.

MEET BLAKEMy name is Blake Robertson. I am in year 10 and in Lowitja sub school. I chose to become a member of the student executive because I wanted to help do something for the school and also try to improve the school based on student ideas, complaints and interests. My hobbies include playing video games, watching movies, hanging out with friends and Taekwondo. I am interested in helping people where I can and becoming an engineer.

MEET TRINITYMy name is Trinity Tytler-Kelly and I am a year 10 student in Lowitja. I play soccer and my favourite subjects are maths, science and tech. I applied to be a part of the Student Executive because I want to contribute to the growth of the school. Building the school community and allowing people to have a voice is something I aim to do. This program will allow me to develop leadership skills which will assist me in the future. As a member of this group it has built my confidence and how I see the school and what can be done to help the students.

MEET RUBYHi I’m Ruby Hickman, I am in year 9 in the Oliphant sub-school.

Interests- I am a part of SSP netball, I play for Garville Netball Club, I race triathlons during summer and in summer I enjoy going to the beach and surfing.

I chose to be a student executive as I wanted to be involved in organising events at our school that benefit other students and teachers. By applying for student executive I am hoping to gain some new leadership skills and use these to help to make the school better.

ZOOSNOOZEArmed with sleeping bags, endless enthusiasm and a map, twenty of Henley High School’s most eager International students took part in a Zoosnooze at Adelaide Zoo. An overnight opportunity for the students to see some of Australia and the world’s most interesting and endangered creatures up close, the camp provided all in attendance a chance to learn not only about the animals but each other. Treated to a personalised tour with a local zoo keeper, the students spent their day learning about the zoo’s many occupants through interactive presentations, orienteering, and live feedings. However, it was after the sun had set and the gates had closed to the public that the zoo came to life, with the students using their flashlights to explore what the animals got up to after lights out. Relishing the opportunity to be independent, the students cooked a feast on a BBQ that could have fed a pride of hungry lions and worked together to set up their tents that overlooked the entire zoo. A rare opportunity for anyone, let alone an international to experience, the only aspect of the trip that was lacking was the amount of sleep, with the only ‘snoozing’ coming from the animals.

HOMESTAYS NEEDEDDue to the growth and diversity of our International Program we are constantly looking for families to host students between 8th to 19th August from Koishikawa, Japan. We need families for 10 boys and 10 girls.

Homestay families are paid approximately $250 per week to host a student.

Our International Student Program depends on the warm hospitality of the local community. If you are willing to host students or are interested in more information please contact the Global Education Team, via email [email protected] or phone 8355 7007.

TRANSITION IN THE SLCIn the SLC we are fortunate to often have our students in the same group throughout their schooling. This allows teachers to support them to grow as individuals over 5 years. The end result of this process allows students to transition from school to work. During their time at Henley High School they undertake a variety of work experience placements at venues such as Bedford Industries, Coles and IKEA. It is therefore very satisfying when students find meaningful employment after leaving school. Congratulations go to Aston Nevard who has secured a full time placement at Orana Enterprises. We wish him every success in the future. Congratulations and well done Aston!

Barry Rusanoff | SLC Teacher

YEAR 12 SLC STUDENTS REFLECT ON THE FORMALThree students from the SLC attended the Formal at the National Wine Centre. William, Rory and Vincent reflected on what they enjoyed about the evening.

Rory had a great time dancing and sharing the photo booth with his friends. He really enjoyed the atmosphere and thought that the chocolate fondue was delicious.

Vincent really enjoyed winning his “Social Butterfly Award” and sharing his success with the staff and his fellow year 12’s. He had a great time mixing with the other students and spending time with the mainstream teachers that he has got to know on his weekly visits.

William really appreciated having the chance to catch up and dance with some of the year 12’s that he went to Primary School with. He really liked seeing all the fashions and loved wearing his new suit.

SLC staff reflected on the evening and really appreciated the fact that our students had a wonderful time and were warmly embraced by the wider school community.

As part of our SSP Golf program our students having been running coaching sessions at Henley Beach Primary School. Our golfers have been asked to prepare a series of 4 sessions with the primary school students focussing on skills such as swing development, chipping and putting. With the support of Allan Telford from Golf SA, our students designed engaging activities including a mini putt-putt course using basic equipment such as rope, cones and flags.

Our students have found the experience very valuable in working with schools in our local community and helping to promote junior golf. The last two sessions will run later in term, finishing with a round of golf on the school oval on a course designed by our students.
