Principal’s Report Welcome to Week Nine

Last Friday our HSC Students travelled to Dubbo to celebrate their graduation, students, staff and families together celebrated the thirteen-year milestone of the conclusion of their formal schooling. I congratulate our graduating class and wish them every success in their future endeavours. Work diligently as you approach the HSC Examinations and be mindful that the opportunities in life are received by those who create them!

On Wednesday last week, Peak Hill Central School hosted the inaugural InterAgency Expo. The expo was a great success and the number of community and family members who participated was extraordinary, I sincerely thank you for attending and also wish to acknowledge all those agencies who were present for their commitment to our school, students and community.

The Preliminary Examinations are being held this week, I encourage all students to ensure they are well rested and prepared as they complete their final assessments prior to commencing their Higher School Certificate studies next term.

On Monday of Week 10 students from Kindergarten to Year 8 will participate in a workshop addressing the issue of bullying. The Stamp Out Bullying program endeavours to provide students with positive strategies to deal with bullying and harassment. Also on Monday is our next visit from Craig Skene our Police Liaison Officer. On Monday, Craig will be working specifically with Stage 3 with a follow-up visit on Thursday of Week 1 next term to work with Stage 4 and 5.

I wish everyone all the best for the week ahead; and please contact the school if you wish to discuss any aspect of the education of your child.

This week Kindergarten started a drumming program taught by Vicki Sharah. Students enjoyed learning the basic moves and coordinating their left and right hands to follow repeated patterns. They also discussed what being ‘in time’ means. This program will continue every Tuesday afternoon.

Stage 1

'Stage 1 have been studying The Tin Forest by Helen Ward. The Tin Forest is a book about an old man who lives in a dump and he builds a tin forest from all the scrap metal around his home. Once he builds the tin forest the animals start coming and the plants and trees start growing.

They have worked extremely hard over the last week writing various pieces about the book. Here are our writing samples that we published yesterday.'

Second Work Placement Block

A smaller band of nine Western Access students recently attended their second Dubbo Work Placement block, enabling most now to have completed their mandatory hours for their various VET subjects, some Preliminary, some HSC.

Construction students had the wonderful opportunity to be on site when companies, Orth Building and Brett Harvey Design erected the frames for their current building projects. An awesome experience for two young boys in the early stages of their training.

The Dubbo RSL, Commercial Hotel and Riverdale café, Lavish hosted Hospitality students providing them with the important skills of kitchen work and for some the all-important customer service. “Yes, Miss.. I know now, you have to cut a lot of carrots,…..smile a lot ……and cut more carrots.”

Dubbo Mowers and Chainsaws as well as DK Little Engineering provided opportunities for the Metals and Engineering students. Both were female students, a challenge in a traditionally male dominated workplace and both completed their week successfully.

Our only Early Childhood TAFE student was blessed with a full range of transition experiences at Rainbow Cottage where it was confirmed by her supervising staff member that she was most suited to this profession and was well on her way in terms of the necessary skill development valuable to this career choice.

On the whole, this group especially enjoyed as well as valued their experiences for the week, only made

possible by the generosity of Dubbo employers, the securing of placements by WSC and the Western Access staff who gave up so much of their time to supervise, deliver and retrieve students on time and safely to their work sites.

Visual Design gives students the opportunity to develop an understanding and practice in a variety of fields including Graphic Design, Wearable Design, Product Design and Interior and Exterior Design. Students are challenged with a Design Brief each unit to create a product for a mock client. Students document the technical aspects of their work and document the evolution of their concepts and ideas through critical reflection and sketches. It encourages the exchange of views, constructive criticism and further enhances their design concepts. This term students are designing labels and packaging for a mock company.

Thursday 22 September P & C MEETING

As part of NAIDOC Week our Miss Stewart and the Kindergarten students attended a health program at our local hospital. Mr Dave Naden welcomed the students and introduced some of the hospital staff.

The program focused on good hand washing techniques and studying the Australian guide to healthy eating. The kitchen staff prepared a fruit platter with the design of the Aboriginal Flag which featured strawberries, pineapple and grapes.

Residents of the care unit participated in an exercise with the class involving catching “the bus” safely in the car park.

Head Lice

How do head lice spread? Head lice mainly spread through close head-

to-head touching. They may be spread through sharing

brushes and hats.

Managing head lice

While the head lice may be adequately killed by the chemical treatment, some people want to be very sure that their family, or others, cannot catch the lice from bedding, towels, clothes, toys, furniture or carpets.

Any live lice will be killed by heat. Washing in hot water (over 60ºC), or putting bedding etc. into a hot tumble dryer, or ironing clothing or bedding will kill lice.

Use of pesticide bombs or steam cleaning carpets is not needed. Vacuuming is sufficient. Please check your child’s hair regularly
