KPS Annual Kinder Kids Sports Clinic
Yesterday 23 kinder kids attended our Annual KPS Sports Clinic. The
children arrived full of excitement and dressed ready for action. Many of the
children wore their footy colours. The purpose of this fun activity was to
familiarise the incoming 2017 Prep kids with both the staff and the school
surrounds. The session began with a name badge presentation followed by
a warm up and a variety of footy activities. To cap off the clinic children
enjoyed sitting together and sharing lunch. Thanks to Betty, Annmarie and
Jasminka for their assistance in organising the day and the tasty hotdogs
and party pies.
I should also mention our marvellous student helpers and thank them for
their assistance. Thanks Jahri Hogan-Van Rooij, Blake Webb, Tahlia Zizic,
Raj Lamers, Charlee Walker, Luke Walker, Sophie McKenzie, Travis Hall,
Ayla Fowler, Max Crooke, Jazmine Findlay and Joel Cuman. All of you
were brilliant role models and helped ensure that the little ones had plenty
of fun. You did the school proud.

Volunteering at School -Working With Children Check
We would like to remind all parents who are planning on
volunteering at KPS to please ensure that they have provided the
school with evidence of a valid Working With Children Check Card.
All volunteers require a current working with children’s check. We
are fortunate to have many parents volunteer to help at school. This
includes attending school camp, classroom help etc… Volunteer
cards are free of charge. Employee cards cost $119 dollars. Please
see the link below for further information and your application:
http://www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au/home/applications/ Parent Opinion Survey is due
Thank you to the randomly selected parents who have returned
their Parent Opinion Survey. We still have a number of families’
surveys that we are waiting for. If you are a family that has been
selected can you please assist us with your feedback and aim to
return the surveys on Monday at the latest.
All the families who return their surveys completed, will go into a
draw for a voucher to the Rainbow Palace Restaurant to the value
of $50. There will also be a small treat for any students who return
the sealed envelope, containing the completed survey, to the Office.
This survey is a really important part of our annual evaluation of
school performance and I urge all families who have been randomly
selected to participate and please complete the survey. We need to
get as many responses as possible to make the survey results
meaningful.
Thanks in advance.

School Attendance
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the families that make an effort to get their child to school every day on time. While we encourage maximum attendance for enhanced learning, we also acknowledge that there are very valid reasons at times that will prevent perfect attendance. Where a child is very sick we of course encourage our students to stay home. I always say to the students that we should aim high and if there is a reason we don’t quite make it then that is okay as some things we just cannot control. Please use Compass or call the school if your child is going to be absent. All student absences must be explained by the parent. The Importance of Arriving at School on Time Please also be aware of the importance of being organised and getting your child to school on time. Arriving on time really allows for your child to have a smooth start to the school day. At the beginning of the day our staff outlines the day’s program with all of the children. The start of day is a key time in the day where our teachers’ are giving out important instructions and information. It is also the time of the day where all of our students in the school are working on their Literacy. Being late really does interrupt the learn-ing of your child and also the learning of others in the room. Please aim to have your child at school no later than 8:50am.

Year One students have been learning facts about weather.
The clouds are white and some are grey. The grey clouds tell us that it is going to rain!
Roquell Nuzzaco
A tornado can pick up a cow. We need sun. Rain helps plants. In the snow you can build a snowman.
Braiden Woodman
I know that wind can be strong. I know that lightning comes before thunder. Weather can be cold and hot. Weather tells us what
to wear. Wind can be so strong that it can make a twister and a twister can bring up things.
Ella DeBondt
Note to Parents:
This is a timely reminder that the cold, wet and wild weather is upon us and all children need to rug up and keep warm. Please make sure all
children have jumpers and jackets to wear at school. All outside designated play areas are starting to get very wet and muddy so it would be
appreciated if your child could please bring a spare set of clothing to keep in their bag. Our supply of tissues in the classrooms is now severly
depleted with the coughs and colds. If you could buy an extra box of tissues next time you are shopping and send it along to school we would
be grateful for any contributions.

P E News Gymnastics
All students are currently participating in a unit of work on Gymnastics. They are having a lot of fun balancing, rocking, rolling, hanging,
springing & landing and moving in different ways. It is wonderful to see the students challenging themselves in a variety of ways. It will be
great to watch the gymnasts in the Olympics and recognise the difficulty of some of their moves.
Future events
It’s a busy time for some of our students who have some important sporting events coming up. We have students training at lunchtimes for:
Mixed netball team that is competing in Melbourne on Thursday 25th August
Relay teams & other athletes – who are competing at the Division Athletic Sports on Thursday 8th September
Basketball tryouts are underway for Year 5 & 6 students interested in playing in a basketball tournament in Korumburra on Friday 2nd
September
If your child is involved in any of these activities can you please ensure they please bring suitable footwear to school so they can participate in
regular practise sessions.

Senior Department
It was an exciting week last week with the Year 5 & 6 students starting their ‘Resilience Program’ here at KPS with Megan Vui llermin. Megan
has a strong background in this area and will be running a further 4 sessions for the students over the next four weeks.
The sessions run for approximately 30 minutes for each class and give students the opportunity to participate in activities, whilst sharing and discussing their thoughts on ‘resilience’. It was great to have so many parents join us for lunch last Friday, followed by a short presentation
from Megan giving an overview of the program.
Please remember, this program works best when students are able to discuss the sessions with family and friends at home, helping consolidate their learning and connect to real life scenario’s linked to the topic of resilience. We hope students continue to enjoy this program
and I know we’re excited to see what’s in store this week!

BIG WRITE & VICSPELL
We continue this term to have our BIG WRITES. Across the school as part of our writing teaching, we are
focusing on Non –Fiction writing. Children are writing facts, reports, descriptions and explanations. As well
classes focus on VCOP areas of Vocab, Connectors, Openers and Punctuation. Our BIG WRITES are
opportunities to put all this learning together.
BIG WRITES is not a test, it is a time for children to be writers and practise their learning! Just before the
dedicated writing time, the children spend time talking together about the topic and the learning. This is when
they can hear and say words, build sentences orally, share experiences, revisit their learning goals and begin to
plan their pieces. They then have quiet writing time supported by teacher conferencing.
Children are still asked to have HOME TALK time at home on the day before a BIG WRITE. HOME TALK
provides a shared opportunity for children to talk out loud and gather ideas and words, and remember knowledge
and experiences around the topic. It is not expected that they conduct any research or write any pieces.
SIMPLY talking about it is all that is expected. "If they can talk about it, they can write about it." For Non-Fiction
writing, it is great for children to hear some of the more technical and topic specific words they might be able to
use when writing.
Rather than sending home fortnightly notes, some classes are now making notes of the topic in diaries and
handing over a level of responsibility to students to raise the topic at home. Please ask your children about BIG
WRITE and take some minutes to have these conversations, maybe in the car to and from school or around the
kitchen bench or dinner table.
The BIG WRITE topic and writing type will be posted on Compass. Our next BIG WRITE will be next Thursday
4th of August and the topic will be given on the Wednesday before.
Students say they love BIG WRITES because of the special quiet time to write, the different topics, the planning
and when they can use their imagination and write stories.
VICSPELL
Once again Korumburra Primary School is preparing to compete in the VICSPELL competition. This involves
selecting two Year 5 and two Year 6 children to represent KPS at the South Gippsland Zone level for progression
through to the Gippsland Regional Final and beyond! Once again KPS is hosting this first level on the 30 th
August. At this early stage we are going through rigorous ‘testing’ for interested students willing to have a go at
being KPS Star Spellers.

Library Report
Premiers’ Reading Challenge – 6 weeks to go! Congratulations to Bronte Whyte and Kirrah Belvedere who have
completed ‘The Challenge’. Well done girls.
Wednesday Story time with Mrs Rotthier – This week a small group of students listened to another of this year’s shortlisted
books ‘Piranhas Don’t Eat Bananas’ by Aaron Blabey.
There was lots of laughter coming from upstairs as the students enjoyed the book and then they decorated their own piranhas
which are on display in the Library.
Just a reminder that we will be celebrating Book Week in the Library Monday 22nd – Friday 26th August and our annual
Scholastic Book Fair will be arriving on Tuesday 30th August.
