Aboriginal Language Teacher Meeting Last Thursday we had a great gathering of Aboriginal Language Teachers in our hall. Ms Sandra Williams organised the day and showed the hospitality of NHPS. Our very clever Stage 1 performed a song in Gumbayngirri on the day. Thank you to Aunty Sandra and Stage 1 staff and students.

Captains and Prefect speeches 2014 – This week Year 5 students demonstrated their ability in public speaking when they presented their thoughts to fellow students. The aim of the speeches was to encourage students to vote for them as Captain or Prefect for 2014. They were given the topic - What makes a good leader - just prior to their presentation. The students presented an array of excellent speeches. Well done Year 5 and congratulations on a job well done. Captains and Prefects will be announced on Presentation Day 10th December.

Welcome The school welcomes Dakota Edwards who has taken up a traineeship with TAFE and will be seen around the school

this year and next year for one day per week.

Speech Program With National Partnership funds this year, the school has been able to run a speech program for some students in their early years of school who are experiencing difficulty with language and articulation. Mrs Karina Hoffman has worked closely with Jessica Clark (Speech Therapist) to develop individual programs for a number of students. This week parents of the students on the program have been invited to school to celebrate the success of the program. I’d like to thank Mrs Hoffman for her hard work and enthusiasm for improving student outcomes at NHPS.

Swim School Swim School is on next week. Expect to have some very tired children after double sessions of swimming each day. A big thank you to Mrs Battiston who has organized the swim school.

School Funding There are a lot of changes in the structure of education. I would have to say the most change I have experienced in my teaching career in one lump. I am sure once we are used to the changes things will be fine. One of the changes is around how schools are funded. Part of the funding schools will receive under the new model is based on data collected from our enrolment information. Items such as the level of parents education is used, as well as parent’s employment status. Each year at the end of Term 1 this information will be collected and used with other information to arrive at the school’s funding for the year. So it is very important that our enrolment information is up-dated in Term 1. If you have a change of employment status we would

be pleased if you could drop in or send a note and let us know.

Phone Numbers Make sure emergency details are up-to-date especially changed phone numbers. It is vitally important for the school to be able to contact parents and up-to-date information is essential. You can check at the office if you are unsure if your details are correct.

Seemore Seemore was very tricky last week. I had to look for a while to work out where he was hiding. Aunty Emily’s chair could just be seen. The area near Aunty Emily’s chair is the area our Friday Mufti money will improve and turn into an outdoor learning area and yarning circle. Mrs Miller has plans in hand for the area which should be completed in the first weeks of the school holidays. I hope you worked out where Seemore was for your guess in the “Where is Seemore” quiz? The winners this week are: Stage 1 - Jacob Monaghan Stage 2- Titan Challenor Stage 3 - Amanda Goodby Seemore would like students to remember the value of learning this week and to “try to learn something new each day.” Morelle Makinson Relieving Principal

Each week we are running a special section for our new Kinder 2014 parents. Settling in and doing well I hope parents have found these special features over the last three weeks helpful. If you show your child that you think he can manage at school, he will start to believe it too. Try not to let your child know about any worries you might have. Sometimes it’s helpful to talk to other parents about how they are doing this. Inviting a school friend to play helps strengthen the links between school and home. You can be an active partner in your child’s education. At home you can help them with reading and any

homework such as finding interesting show-and-tell or costumes for special days. If possible, try taking part in school social events and getting involved with fundraising or working bees. Make time to get to know your child’s teacher. In the whole new world that is school, it will help if your child understands the following:

How the school routine operates. For example, that they have to sit on the mat in the morning and come in from play when the bell rings. You could try reminding them about this routine.

They have to listen when their teacher is talking and then put up their hand when they want to ask a question.

They need to cooperate, share and play fairly with other children.

This will be the last week of sport choices. A special thank you to Mr Kelsey, Mr Patfield and Alan Spokes for assisting with bike riding.
