As most of you know, we when through our first accreditation visit the second week of March, and a large measure of our success goes to the excellent organizational and people skills of Ms. Sharon Murakami. Thank you Sharon for all you do for our school. The WASC experience is an excellent school improvement process and I feel not only did our Kahakai community do an excellent job of preparing for the visit, but the WASC team was extremely impressed by what they found during their time here. “The Self Study Report document reflects the collaborative effort of the faculty, staff, student representatives and parent community representatives. The report is a powerful statement of the school’s processes and the impact of these on student achievement” The team also found “teachers and administrators are dedicated to students”, and the school has a “professional working and learning environment”. The team also found that “attendance efforts need to improve to reduce chronic absenteeism”. On that issue I am reprinting a note from a previous monthly newsletter. “On another issue, as I mentioned last month, I feel our efforts to resolve the high school dropout problem by focusing on middle and high school students is a little misguided. A student in high school does not wake up one morning and suddenly decide to drop out of school. The decision to drop out of school is a long, on-going process, which begins with poor attendance in elementary school. Also, in reviewing our data on reading proficiency, we see a strong correlation between poor attendance and poor academic performance. This is compounded by the fact that our greatest attendance problems are in kindergarten and first grade. On a side note, the research also indicates that if a student gets behind in reading in the first grade, it is very difficult for them to catch up. Also, this is not your grandparent’s kindergarten. Students exiting kindergarten for first grade must know their numbers, letters, sounds, and basic reading skills. Each day of school they are allowed to miss, you jeopardize their future educational success. Unless your child is ill, you owe it to them to ensure they are in school every day.” Aloha, J. ANNOUNCEMENTS

Aloha parents, It saddens me to say that we have had a series of thefts from our 2nd and 3rd grade backpack areas. Please remind your children that they should not be bringing items of value to school. If they do have to bring items of value, please tell them to leave those items with the teacher. We will be monitoring the backpack areas daily, but teachers may ask their students to bring backpacks inside and hang them on the backs of chairs or stack them against a wall. This will help us to better monitor unauthorized access. We are asking everyone to be watchful and report any suspicious activity in the backpack area. We would very much like to catch the culprits.

We are reminding our students that if they are caught stealing from someone else's back-pack, they could be suspended from school and the police may be called. Additionally, Ms. Kathy will be offering guidance classes on respecting others' proper-ty. Teachers are presently scheduling these lessons. If you need any further assistance or want to report any suspicious activity, please let us know. Thanks for your cooperation, Jessica Dahlke Vice Principal
