Principal's MessagePrincipal's Message

At the start of a school year I always gauge the progressof the year by how our newest and youngest students areprogressing. I have been out to morning lines a few times overthe past few weeks as well as the whole school assemblylast Friday to witness the way the new kindergarten studentshave been flourishing. They are lining up beautifully, being activelearners, listening to instruction, and being safe as they moveand cross the road. Thank you to parents for answering the callto move off and giving the kids the confidence to integrate ontheir own. It makes such a huge difference.

Our parent teacher evening was a huge success on Mondaynight. There was a really big turnout in all of the classroomsand I know that the teachers are very thankful for that as theyall made a big effort to prepare materials, stage overviews aswell as presentations that will help guide how you interact overthe coming days, weeks, terms and semesters. For those whowere not able to make it, materials will be sent out so you willnot miss out. Our 2020 school year is definitely at full speed.

To help the process we will be introducing a concept that iscommonly featured at other schools, that is the role of 'ClassParent'. Some of you may remember that the P&C had arepresentative from each class last year. The school would likethat role to evolve into this. Focused on coordinating discussionbetween parents, the Class Parent would collect the contactdetails of parents who wish to be contacted and providing amechanism for the exchange of information. This can be reallybeneficial in breaking down the barriers of communication flow

as these groups help each other out. See the information laterin the newsletter about the concept.

Looking forward, we have our postponed annual SwimmingCarnival next Monday 24 February and again hopefully PSSAon Friday. These involve all children in year 3 and older as wellas for the swimming carnival, capable swimmers who turn 8this year. I am very much looking forward to taking the girls toFriday PSSA Soccer and to be race starter at the swimmingcarnival. Sport is such an important part of children's lives withthe emphasis in participation and enjoyment.

Hello Parents and Guardians,

The first thing that happened over the past two weeks is that wehave a new date for the swimming carnival, which is the 24th ofFebruary. We are hoping very dearly that we will have wonderfulweather for our new swimming carnival.

The new PSSA sports teams include Girls Soccer, MixedBasketball and Boys AFL. Unfortunately their first games werewashed out and they were unable to play for our school, but

Year 6 has been very busy with their buddies. They have beenmaking Valentines Day cards for their Parents, and have beenreading lots of books together.

Lately 5ST have been learning a lot of maths mentals, roundingnumbers and multiplication. A fun thing student Joel B did thisweek was playing footy with his friends and going to the library.5/6D have been learning about natural disasters and how theyare made. They have also been doing a lot of art. Cash andMax’s favorite thing this week was sport. 6G have been readingthe book Wonder for their English unit and studying wholenumber in Maths. Cooper and Dakota are enjoying Year 6.

Why have a Class Parent?Why have a Class Parent?

Parent involvement in their child’s learning is key a critical totheir success. Encouragement and involvement in the schoolis recognised a key to their children’s love of their school andthus their love of learning. Parents are often time poor and donot have enough time to communicate effectively with otherparents in the playground and can feel disenfranchised from theschooling experience. While traditional forms of communicationsuch as newsletters and newer forms of communication suchas SchoolZine push notifications remind parents of happenings,they don’t work as well at the class level. In a K-6 school theclass and their teacher(s) are a constant and one that oftencauses angst for parents when they feel disconnected. Theconcept of the class parent allows for the enhancement of thefeeling of community.

What does the role look like?What does the role look like?

The class parent concept is based on the idea of the weekendsporting team coach. At the non-competitive level, thesecoaches are often parents who have a little more time to beinvolved in the training of the team and the running andorganisation of shirt washing and fruit rosters.

The class parent would take on this roll by collecting contactdetails from parents who are willing to be part of the classparents group (we're kick starting that process for you). Theywould then coordinate and encourage respectful discussionabout issues that may crop up from time to time in the wholeclass as well as meet with the class teacher twice a term toprovide feedback. The class teacher would also be able towork with the class parent to better communicate changesin routines and other class related matters. It would also beencouraged that the class parent attend P&C meetings andpossibly even arrange social activities for parents and the

children to mix and break down social barriers. Effectively, aproblem shared is a problem significantly reduced.

Attendance is a very important well-being issue. Every child hasthe right to an education for which the government is obligedto provide schooling. Additionally, parents are required by lawto bring their children to school and to acquit any period ofabsence with a reason.

A respectful reminder to please advise the school of absencesfor your child due to sickness or any other reason. If your child

• Meet with a clear agenda and questions on noticethe class parent, at least once per term;

• Respond to respectful and positive feedback fromthe class parent;

• Facilitate communication through notes and otherinformation to be passed on via the class parent; and

• Discuss feedback from the class parent at stagemeetings which in turn can be passed onto theschool.

• Manage a list of names of other parents;

• Facilitate communication between these parentsusing whatever means appropriate for the group;

• Relay important information from the class teacher,school and P&C to the other parents;

• Organise gatherings to facilitate belonging and helpsolve problems; and

Additionally, while extended absences can be accepted forjustified leave, holidays need to be taken during the schoolholidays, not during term time. Applications for extended leavewill be considered on a case by case basis and even whenapproved, there will be an expectation of proof that you havesupported learning during this time. If this is not forthcoming onreturn, the leave approved will be changed to unjustified. Therewill be exceptions to this where extenuating circumstancesexist.

Finally, your child's classroom teacher will make every effort toobtain a reason for an absence. If you don't provide this within 7school days of the first day of the absence, the teacher will referthis to the principal who will contact you for an explanation. Ifa reason cannot be obtained, the matter may be referred tothe Department of Education's Home School Liaison Officer toinvestigate.

Could you be an ethics coordinator for Cronulla South PublicSchool? Our 2019 current ethics coordinator has moved onand we are seeking a volunteer to take on the EthicsCoordinator Role. Ethics classes began at Cronulla SouthPublic School in 2016 and are currently available for childrenfrom year 1 to year 6 with numerous students currently on awaiting list. There may also be a kindergarten class this yeardepending on numbers.

The ethics coordinator communicates with school staff,supports ethics teachers and liaises with Primary Ethics, thenot-for-profit organisation approved to design curriculum andtraining for the program. This role provides a great opportunityfor a working parent who might be unable to volunteer duringschool hours and is a rewarding way to engage with the schoolcommunity. Times are flexible, requiring approximately 1-2hours per week. Online training is provided.

In ethics classes, children learn how to think logically, disagreerespectfully and support their arguments with evidence, ratherthan act according to blind habit or peer pressure.

Students are to be at school by 8:20am for roll call, ready todepart at 8:30am sharp.

Cronulla Zone Team Selection PolicyCronulla Zone Team Selection Policy

The zone pathway is for students who are able to demonstratethey are gifted and talented athletes. Zone trials are not acome and try day. The school can send a maximum of 6students from the school to attend on the day. If a studentis unavailable for the Sydney East and/or NSW State Carnival,then they are deemed ineligible to be chosen in the zone team.

If your child is playing at a top level in any of the followingsports, they need to ensure that they collect a form from MissSamsely or Miss Galletta within the timeframe. Students whodo not return the form in time, will not be able to attend.

Beginning week 5, each Wednesday our school will be hostingan in-school AFL program for 4 weeks. This program is linkedto Physical Education outcomes in the NSW Syllabus, achievedthrough practicing the core skills of the game. The skills taughtin the program are beneficial to a range of different sports andactivities and help support student’s gross-motor development.

We would like to say a big THANK YOU to the families andstudents K-6 who have been contributing to our school returnand earn program. So far this year we have one bin that is full(approximately 300 bottles/cans). William F from 2HG has beenrecruiting family and friends to take part and collect bottlesto ensure they are being recycled correctly as well as raisingmoney for our school. Please continue to bring in eligible bottlesand cans and place them in the blue bins outside the schoollibrary. Stay tuned for continued updates throughout the year tofind out how much money we have raised and how the moneywill be being used for future recycling projects and initiatives.

The P&C Canteen, located on the Southern site of the school,is run solely by volunteers with all proceeds to benefit the CSPScommunity. The canteen usually operates on Tuesdays andThursdays during school term.

The canteen coordinators are Rachel Scott and MerrianneMcAlpine.

Lunch orders are made online via the Qkr! app. Orders arepacked in the canteen and delivered to classes in time forthe lunch bell at 12.50pm. Kindy and Year 1 lunch orders arehanded out to students by their teachers/supervisors to ensurean orderly process.

We need your help! Volunteering with us is really easy and noprior experience is required. Mums, dads, aunties, uncles andgrandparents are all welcome! Shifts are available from 11amto 1pm and 12pm to 1.15pm. The main tasks include placingorder stickers on lunch bags, heating up pre-prepared foods,packing lunches into bags, sorting lunches into class tubs andcleaning up.

In order to optimise the money we can raise for the school withthe limited number of volunteers available, the decision wasmade to open the canteen on Thursday and Tuesdays foronline lunch orders only.
