The Age newspaper ran a front-page article on Monday this week featuring a

lovely photograph of our School Council Vice President, Divya, and her two

children Lavanya and Eshan. Divya was able to articulate the reasons for

selecting Glendal for her children and The Age followed up this article on

Tuesday.

School closed 11 and 12 June

Please remember that Monday 11 June is a public holiday and as such the

school will be closed.

The school will also be closed on Tuesday 12 June for a Pupil Free Curriculum

Day. On this professional learning day for our staff we will be working with

Mathematics learning strategies.

Sunsmart and Vitamin D

The UV levels in Victoria are falling at this time of the year so

sunscreen and hats are not needed unless you are up at the

snow. From May to August in Victoria UV levels are typically

low (below 3), so it is important to get some sun for vitamin D. Vitamin D is

essential for healthy bones, muscles and general wellbeing. The best natural

source of vitamin D is the sun’s UV. More information is provided at:

The process for the waste audit is that one landfill bin per year level and a specialist bin are taken at the end of a

Wednesday each week for a few weeks. The JEM team sort all the rubbish into the 4 categories below.

1. Landfill

2. Paper/cardboard

3. Recyclable

4. Compostable

Below are the results of the waste audit completed earlier this term compared to the last 2 years.

• Our findings were:

• Total waste put in landfill bins is reducing each year – WIN!

• Amount of landfill waste produced by the school is going down – WIN!

• Lots of the landfill waste was made up of soft plastics – this should be a focus to reduce – future WIN!

• Amount of paper/cardboard going to landfill bins is reducing each year – WIN!

• Amount of recyclable material going to landfill bins is reducing each year – WIN!

• Amount of compostable material going to landfill bins has reduced massively since 2016 (pre-

composting) however has gone up slightly since last year – borderline, but we’ll take it as a WIN!

There is a lot of good news here! However, the bad news is we are still finding paper/cardboard and compost in the

landfill bins. Ideally, these two numbers would be 0! Recycling has been slightly more challenging as we have been

limited by the amount of recycling bins that we have been offered by council, however, we have recently negotiated

for many more and hope to see this number go down even further next year!

day of dressing up to raise awareness and vital funds for childhood brain cancer. All students are encouraged to dress

up like a pirate and enjoy a fun day, and bring a gold coin donation to get behind this great cause. See the flier below.

LOST PROPERTY

I would like to start off by thanking the families who have really listened to the lost property posts and started naming

their child’s clothing and lunch containers. I have noticed a very big increase in named clothing which is very helpful

when I am trying to reunite the owners and lost items.

I would also like to ask parents to have a talk with your child about remembering to pick up their items after lunch. Last

Friday alone I picked up 57 items of clothing and lunch containers, and on average I am still collecting between 20-35

items every lunch.

We currently have about 15 warm rain jackets and beanies in lost property that don’t have names on them, and about

25 lunch containers, so if you are missing some items please call in to have a look, we would love to send them back

home with you.

Thank you also to Liz for all your help collecting lost property on Thursdays.

Have a great week,

Regards Maxine

DISTRICT CROSS COUNTRY

On Wednesday 23 May, 60 students from Years 4-6 went to

Nortons Park to compete in District Cross Country.

Everybody tried their best to finish the race, or even to

progress to the next level. Congratulations to the 12

students who were able to finish in the top 10 for their age

group, and they will now continue on to division, the next

level. Great job to everybody who competed, and thanks for

their amazing effort, Glendal were able to come 2nd overall,

which is a fantastic achievement. Everybody who competed

on Wednesday played a part in this achievement and we

couldn’t have done it without them.
