6th February 2018 #3 Dear Parents It looks like we may have a few wet days this week. As much as possible we try to ensure students have the opportunity to have normal lunch breaks but if it is raining and the grounds are too waterlogged it is necessary to keep students in class during lunch. Teachers will normally organise quiet activities for students. During wet weather students and parents are encouraged to be extra mindful of road safety. Traffic around the school on most days is heavy but on a wet day it is even more chaotic. Thank you for your care and patience during the wet weather. Thank you to all those parents who attended Parent Teacher nights last week. It was great to see so many parents taking the time to meet your child's teacher. Parent Teacher Nights for Prep, Year 1, Year 5 and Year 6 will be held this evening. The Back to School Disco was a great success last Thursday. Thanks to Mr Ashton, Ms Cur- tis and all the teachers for their organisation and also to the P&C for the Sausage Sizzle, Can- teen and the Glow stall. Last Thursday was an important day for the school as this was the Day 8 of the school year and this is when our school enrolment determines our staffing and funding for the year. Our school enrolment is currently 1135 students. Lots of our extra curricular activities get under way this week. Stem Academy and the Music Academy have started and there is a meeting for families involved in the Tri Academy on Wednesday afternoon. Lunch time Art activities also start this week (depending on the weather). These academies are a special initiative of our school and add value to our school curriculum. PREP Looking forward to seeing all Prep families at our Prep parent information night at 5pm (Tuesday, 6th of Feb). What's the weather like today? Take a look outside, look into the sky, what can you see? Weather is an exciting part of our Science unit for this term. It is so amazing how the weather can change so quickly throughout our day.

YEAR 1 Hello Families, we hope to see you tonight in your child's classroom for our Parent Information session. It's so helpful to your child's learning to build a relationship with you so if you cannot make it please let us know a time we can chat. Reading and sightwords are a priority for this term's homework as well as oral presentations. A note about your child's presentation day and date is on it's way home if not landed already.

Year 1 Students of the Week

YEAR 2 Homework has started for all Year 2 classes. Please assist your child to complete their set tasks. Homework includes home reading and learning set spelling words. LOOK/SAY/COVER/WRITE/CHECK. If you have any questions regarding your child's homework, please contact their classroom teacher.

YEAR 5

Just a reminder the Year 5 Parent information evening is tonight at 5:30pm. The session will take place in your child’s classroom. All the students have settled in nicely and are familiar with their classes expectations. In Science, we have been learning about how plants adapt in the environment and in HASS we are learning about Europe and North America.

We are seeking host families to host Japanese volunteer assistant teachers from Term 2. Hosting a volunteer assistant teacher is a great way for your family to learn about Japan and Japanese culture, while sharing your family’s culture with a visitor from Japan. Japanese assistant teachers are usually university students or recent graduates. They are required to be at school on school days from 8:30am—3pm and assist in Japanese lessons across the school. They pay a weekly payment to cover food and board. If you would like more information please contact Stevenson Sensei by email [email protected]. We would like to ask parents to help make our resources for Year 1, 2 and 3 CLIL classes. As all resources are written in Japanese an understanding of Japanese would be helpful. If you have some spare time to help us please contact Nono Sensei [email protected] or Osada Sensei [email protected].

The school has a number of very solid and heavy computer desks which are surplus

to our needs. If you are interested in taking a computer desk please contact the

Office.

Letters went out Wednesday to all students attending the Term One STEMtastic Academy. The support for the STEM program has been astounding again this year with next Term’s Academy numbers growing fast! If you are interested in in your child attending STEMtastic, we begin the next Academy Mid May (dates to be finalised) and will go through to the End of August 2018. Please email me at [email protected] with the subject line “Please Enrol” and write in the message section, your child/ren’s name/s, grade/s and the Academy you are interested in: Term 2 or Term 3. NOTE: There is no Term Four Academy this year. STEMtastic Academy is a 10 week introduction into some basic STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) concepts through small group, closely supervised hands–on activities. The $100 fee allows us to purchase materials, afternoon tea and aide time for the ten 1 ½ hour sessions. Term One Robocup competition is coming up soon. This first competition is the Sumo Cup and we need any years 4,5 and 6 future robot scientists to participate. Students will have to dedicate their lunch hours to building, coding and testing their Sumo “Wrestle-bots” (they usually resemble a bulldozer shape). Students can register their interest in this competition by emailing me (see the address above) or leaving their name with Miss Sally in the Library.
