I'm sure that everyone is sick of the constant rain by now. The boys all appear a bit stir crazy from being stuck inside all day. With the constant rain it is inevitable at the moment that families are struggling to get their sons' uniforms dry. Can I please remind parents that your son needs a note from you if he is out of uniform. The P&C meeting is on Monday in the Common Room. It would be great if you could make it. The meeting starts at 7pm.

7Q ENGLISH – FEELING CONNECTED

This term our class, 7Q, has been learning about connections. During English classes we have created wonderful speeches about how we are connected or how we have found our connections. Here are some examples of what we have learnt about connections.

I feel a strong sense of belonging to my family. We’re the most connected when we’re on holidays at Nelson Bay together. I feel this way because I am included and accepted, and it makes me feel like I belong. When we’re at Nelson Bay, we visit each other. Our parents, aunts and uncles share stories about their experiences when they were younger. This makes me feel connected to them because I get to know more about who they are. Their stories also allow me to understand them more, and when they’re telling me these stories I find that I can relate to their experiences. Lachlan

Do you find it hard to connect because you feel that you won’t fit in? If so, you don’t have to feel alone as I was also once disconnected. Connection means to have a strong bond with someone and unfortunately I didn’t have that sense of connection with anyone. I felt just like the protagonist of the short film “The Boy Who Wanted to be a Lion”. As I was watching the film with the class I realised the boy felt disconnected because he was deaf. The boy was sad and lonely. The animated short film shows the deep human desire to be accepted. This was clear through the boy’s obsession with the lion. A close up shot of his face shows the positive change in the boy which comes from making a connection. John Daoud

Theorists say that we are all connected. We can take six steps in any direction and face a friend of a friend. So why don’t we feel it? It is because connections that are powerful don’t just happen, they form over time. Suleiman

2017 HSC MUSIC STUDY DAY

Year 12 Music students attended the 2017 HSC Music Study Day at Rooty Hill High School on Thursday 2nd March 2017. This was a fantastic day for all participating students as they were given resources and advice to assist them with their preparation of their Practical and Written Higher School Examinations. There were a number of workshops presented by experienced Music 1 and Music 2 HSC Markers to guide students with selecting their options (Musicology, Composition or Performance) and topics for their Higher School Certificate in Music.

ICE ICE BABY

7 Hollows has put their historic detective skills to good use and investigated the unfortunate demise of Otzi the Iceman (over 5,300 years ago). Students investigated and debated various theories into who Otzi was and how he died. They then provided an argument for the most plausible theory in an in-class exercise, as part of the schools extended writing program.

THE DRUMMING ENSEMBLE 2017

The Drumming Ensemble has been busy learning rhythms and drumming techniques from around the world. In addition to learning about all aspects of music, this ensemble is an excellent way for students to learn self-awareness, listening skills, coordination, movement, cooperation and patience. We still have a limited number of places available. No experience is necessary for this ensemble. Please see Mr Pieterse in the CAPA staff room if you would like to join.

THE COLOURFUL WORLD OF FITNESS

At the start of the year, Years 7- 9 students were involved in fitness testing. Endurance, strength, agility, speed, coordination and flexibility were tested aiming to provide students with better understanding of their own level of fitness. All students were encouraged to perform to the best of their ability, analyse data and identify their own strengths and weaknesses. Year 9 students have also developed strategies to improve specific areas of their fitness they deem important in their everyday life. PDHPE Faculty - Building healthier tomorrow!
