• Newspapers & Magazines: A publication that appears regularly and frequently carries news about a wide variety of current events. one of the most important functions of the newspaper -- a crucial function in a democracy -- is to provide citizens with information on government and politics.

• Indian print media is one of the largest print media in the world. The history of it started in 1780, with the publication of the Bengal Gazette from Calcutta.

• James Augustus Hickey started the Bengal Gazette.

• The first newspaper in an Indian language was the Samachar Darpan in Bengali.

• The first Hindi newspaper, the Oodunt Marthand began in 1826.

• Newspapers in India are measured on two parameters, circulation and readership.

CirculationCirculation is certified by the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) which is an industry body. It audits the paid-for circulation of the member newspaper companies. it is also related to readerships.

ReadershipReadership is estimated by two different surveys, The Indian Readership Survey (IRS) and the National Readership Survey (NRS).

• Newspapers and magazines in India are independent and largely privately owned. About 5,000 newspapers, 150 of them major publications, are published daily in nearly 100 languages. Over 40,000 periodicals are also published in India. The periodicals specialize in various subjects but the majority of them deal with subjects of general interest.
