THE CHAMPS

Print Long and Prosper!

HAPPY New Year passionate print lovers and pioneers of Malaysia! It is once again

the beginning of a year where we have successfully kept our resolu-tions going. Print will once again go through another exciting year of major changes and developments with the year going into more inno-vations and personalization.

There is a mission that needs much preparing for and I have found a sort of solution in the midst of playing the infamous Candy Crush game application on my android. After consecutively losing for the tenth time at Level 236, I realized that we shouldn’t just focus on an obstacle right in front of us. We need to look beyond it to the next one. Sounds very much like a chess game too, no?

This strategy needs to become your mission in 2015. It is time to look ahead, get prepared and control your destiny. And with this, investment is the key to the future of print and the key to yours.

Investing in education I believe is one of the top priorities of any major indus-try and I say this with utmost importance and a voice for the Gen-Y. Without education, we will be at a standstill and fester. So, seek out events, educational opportunities and create a culture of learning within your companies. Or be a pioneer and start workshops for the graduates and newcomers on the wonders of print industry and how their talents especially graduates from graphic design backgrounds should understand the value of their talents and how to hone them further. The industry is moving way too fast and knowledge will be the ultimate power in this age of information.

If you ask a group of twenty-something’s on their preference of business com-munication in terms of business they have done business with, it is without sheer surprise that e-mailing will hardly make that list. Invest in communications espe-cially with social media as we enter new channels, there are many platforms ready for you to make your presence be apparent and amp it up with valuable contribu-tions to the community. It takes time to do it right. Start out with the basics like Facebook, Linkedin and even Youtube.

Your next big move needs to include a serious purchase that will open doors to vast opportunities. You need to invest in your capabilities. Think of the growing market’s needs for customization and personalization and of short-run bookmark-ing. What about equipment that will add to the cool-factor and additional value to everything that you print. Get the education you need on the newest machines and get them onto your work floor as quickly as you can make it happen. And if you can’t do it alone, well then invest in partners!

As print is the most effective information transfer device known to the world. Print IS the new media with remarkable industry advancements and the ability to incorporate a myriad of marketing technologies and the super adaptable nature of delivery. From Print + team, we urge you to invest in a NEW print story!

2015 is going to be an amazing year.

GREAT flood disaster has befallen the east coast of states of Peninsular Malaysia at the

end of 2014. All eyes were on the states of Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang. Where a great part of the states were submerged in flood waters - one of the worst that has ever happened in Malay-sia with the water level reaching over stories high thus destroying many buildings, many farms, and worst of all, many homes.

Kumpulan Media Karangkraf came out with a mission, to call all those who are willing to volunteer and to help donate to come to their marque where every single form of donation will be placed there. Anybody could donate any items such as food, baby diapers, food, drinks, pet food, clothes, baby clothes, anything at all that could help ease the victims’ hardship was accepted, even in the form of money.

They had two three-tonne trucks that

brought the items to the worst places affected by the flood, which were Gua Musang, Dabong and Kuala Krai in Kelantan. Along with these came 50 volunteers who helped and followed through the mission. For the trip after, more volunteers and items came follow-ing through as people have been more aware of this movement.

When asked Azizi Fickry, the gen-eral manager of Karangkraf, as to how such idea came about, he answered kindly saying that as Malaysians, people should always be thoughtful and caring towards their own brethren, Malaysians are one especially in times of darkness.

To empower the strong spirit of soli-darity towards the victims of the flood in this country, all the media under the Kumpulan Media Karangkraf are using the logo and hashtag #KITALAHMALAY-SIA in their social networking sites to raise awareness for those who would like to help and donate for the victims.

Anna Lim, the something of some-thing, had also helped greatly for this cause. With all smiles and cheerfulness, she came to the marque of the Karang-kraf donation place and donated the necessary items for the flood victims. As to why she had done so, aside from the natural need to help those in need, she did it for her friends.

“Because we are friends, we always help each other,” said Anna with the smile on her face

Truly, Malaysia has been hit with many disasters in 2014. However, in times like these, the true spirit of Malay-sians could be shining through as we gather and hold hands in helping our fellow countrymen in times of such dire.

WITH 80 percent of its exhibition space booked, drupa 2016 organisers expect the event to sell out before it opens on May 31, 2016.

Werner M Dornscheidt, chairman of the board at Messe Düsseldorf, says, “In the light of the challeng-ing environment, this is a more than outstanding result. No other industry event worldwide – neither the small, regional niche events nor national trade shows – can offer what we can. This result clearly confirms that our strategic realignment with its focus on future-oriented and highlight topics is correct.”

Under the motto of “touch the future” drupa 2016 will focus more heavily on future-oriented technolo-gies such as printed electronics, 3D printing, and inkjet printing with its industrial applications. Organisers say these technologies feature as market drivers, opening up opportunities and growth potential, primarily for packaging, functional, and industrial printing. According to researchers Smithers Pira, sales in the packag-ing print sector will rise annually by four percentage points to US$970bn by 2018.

For 3D printing, drupa estimates a global market of about US$2.2bn. Dornscheidt adds, “We have therefore developed the 3D fab+print brand spe-cifically for this market segment. At drupa, and other relevant Düsseldorf trade fairs, we are joining forces with other exhibitors in 3D printing tech-nology and bringing greater focus to the entire topic of 3D.”

Claus Bolza-Schünemann, chair-man of the drupa exhibitor advisory board and executive president of KBA, says, “In the online age there has been much discussion in our sector about the usefulness of trade shows. However, the internet simply cannot replace direct con-tact with people and ideas in the global print and media marketplace,

or indeed direct experience of the latest technologies and solutions for this enormously varied market. The drupa global insights report noted how the internet and digital communication has changed print. The show will recognise big data, web-to-print, variable data printing, and internet-supported tools such as augmented reality and QR codes characterise. It will highlight multi-channel printing. Francois Martin, worldwide marketing director at HP’s graphics solutions business, says, “Communication between people is evolving just as quickly as technol-ogy. The new cross media strategy at drupa with the integration of digi-tal and analogue printing as well as print and online will show that the printed product continues to play a key role in communications. Change in an industry requires courage and firm decisions. The realignment does exactly that and I hope that every-one realises that a new journey is beginning. The new drupa stands for effective and sustainable com-munication in a social, mobile and cloud-based world.”

EFI has recently become an active member of the drupa committee and a top 10 exhibitor at drupa 2016. Guy Gecht, chief executive at EFI, says, “In a world where the future quickly becomes now, drupa 2016s realigned aim to touch the future perfectly describes what visitors would like to see. In a fast-changing world, work-ing in an often challenging industry, customers deserve to have the oppor-tunity to explore and compare future investment options.

At 4pm the BBC’s Chris Morris reported:

“There was a sudden burst of intense gunfire

well as possibly grenades, more gunfire and

now it has gone quiet again. We are a few hun-

dred metres from the building.”

The suspects hijacked a car and ended up

HEIDELBERG is bringing four new dig-ital printers to the market to replace old models and venture into the entry level digital game.

The new Linoprint CV and Linoprint CP colour digital printers will replace the Linoprint C751 and C901 models, and says Heidelberg come with improved flexibility and productivity in short, personalised and hybrid runs.

Heidelberg hopes to leverage its profile in the offset world in sup-plying integrated digital and offset applications, with a new Prinect Digital Frontend (DFE) capable of connecting a printshop’s overall production workflow.

Dan Maurer, vice president of digital print and postpress product manage-ment for Heidelberg US, says, “Both the Linoprint CV and Linoprint CP offer greater productivity, near-offset qual-ity, and substrate flexibility to complex graphics work and commercial printing.

“Heidelberg’s colour management, along with improved print quality sta-bility and tight registration, enables these new engines to achieve true hybrid job production matching a shop’s offset presses.

“The expanded substrate range, abil-ity to accommodate format sizes up to 13 x 27.5 inches, with the Linoprint CV’s five colour capability, offer commercial printers marketable applications not

previously available in this price class.”The Linoprint CV, targeted to custom-

ers that already have digital capacity and want to grow both volume and application flexibility, has a printing speed of 90ppm across its substrate range.

In addition to printing with the four primary colours, the CV also offers either a high-opacity white or high-gloss coat-ing as an exchangeable fifth colour. Heidelberg says registration accuracy enables multi-pass applications featur-ing raised printing and white effects for short-run labels or packaging.

Users can choose from a variety of substrates ranging from structured papers and coated media to coloured paper and synthetic films up to 14-point board. Toner with a low melting point means the machine can print on heat sensitive plastics.

With support for paper formats up to 13 x 27.5 inches users can produce three-page folding brochures or posters up to 27.5 inches in a single operation.

KAMA and HP Indigo have added a joint competitor to the digitally printed carton race, presenting an end-to-end print and finish system to some 450 printers at its launch in Germany.

Marcus Tralau, chief executive of Kama, says the rise in short production runs for cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, health care and food products has con-fronted packaging producers with new challenges.  He says, “This complete networked solution for short-run fold-ing carton production hits the pulse of the times. Short runs are not profitable on high-volume machinery, but they are now evolving from an unpleasant irrita-tion to a growth market.

Kama has developed a folder gluer, the FlexFold 52, to work in tandem with Indigo machines, deal with frequent and fast job changes, and to be set up quickly to produce different products and formats.

The FlexFold’s new APA-System, for automated plough length adjustment, makes it possible to adjust the folding belts automatically in transverse and longitudinal directions, honing change-over down to a matter of minutes. Kama has global patents pending for the set up.

The folding cartons are printed and varnished in line with the HP Indigo 30000 digital press. Kama and HP Indigo have worked together since 2010, this is their latest joint venture for the pack-aging market. The companies says the Kama solutions by themselves will also appeal to commercial printers that carry

As part of its strategic realignment,

the company will focus on print finish-

ing in the future, strengthened by its

recent takeover of Heidelberg service

and spare parts business for its saddle

stitchers, perfect binders and thread-

sealing machines.

The Swiss company says it could

only partly absorb the substantial slump

sales, despite extensive periods of

short-time work at its Maulburg pro-

the drastic contraction of the traditional

market for forms printing presses over

the past decades prompted it to focus

on new business segments in recent

years, with an aim to establish size-

variable web offset printing for labels

and flexible packaging in the growing

packaging market.

Bruno Müller, chief executive at

Müller Martini, says, “Despite exten-

sive investments and years of effort,

the broad take-up of offset technol-

ogy on the packaging market has only

succeeded to a limited extent. Since

established business segments such as

security and commercial printing could

by no means make up for the loss in

volume in recent years, the company

believes that the chances of a success-

ful turnaround from its own efforts alone

able partners in the packaging market

has also proven unsuccessful to date.”

including Japan, Australia, the US, Brazil, Mexico, Russia and around Europe to Kama’s head office in Dresden, Germany, to see the demo production of folding car-tons in different formats with the new system, including personalisation and finishing.

Alon Bar-Shany, vice president and general manager of HP Indigo, says, “We have listened carefully to our custom-ers, recognised the potential for digitally printed folding cartons and, together with Kama, have created this compact, efficient workflow.

HP presented its B2 digital press equipped with inline primer and var-nishing unit Tresu iCoat 30000 at the launch. The folding cartons were printed with seven colours, including white. HP says quality reached offset standard, combined with variable data and designs – each visitor received a personalised box with his or her photo.

The digital prints were diecut on Kama’s DC 76 diecutter, designed for short runs, 760 x 600mm, with and without hot foil stamping and including AutoRegis-ter technology to correct sheet alignment and ensure accuracy.

All machines in the workflow are connected via a network, helping to coordinate many short runs in a day and controlling their status. The production control, machine presets and analysis of performance data is carried out through JDF (electronic job ticket) and JMF.

HE third edition of the Malaysia Print Awards was held at the Sime Darby Con-vention Centre on Dec 2, 2014. It was an opulent event filled with much grandeur and eye-catching entertainment.

“Today’s generation has officially been welcomed into the prestigious

biennial print awards catered to the design students of higher institutes,” said organising committee chair-person Anna Lim Aun Nor.

With the addition of the new Konica Minolta Stu-dent Design Award category, the awards welcome a new generation of fresh faces to the guest list. The awards are under the auspices of the Selangor and Federal Territory Chinese Printing & Presses Association, the country’s leading representative organization in the print communications industry that are living and breathing their mission to be the catalyst for the evolu-tion of printing, packaging and visual communications in Malaysia.

“We will continue to organize the fourth and fifth chapters and many more for the future of the print awards. The printing industry is going through some tremendous changes and is not only putting ink to paper but is now integrating with the packaging from the design all the way to the distribution. I hope people will have better understanding towards the indus-try with the exposure that they will have during the

print awards and promote this industry further,” said SFTCPPA president Cheong Kok Wai.

With entirely new technologies having been intro-duced, some practices have slowly ceased and changed but some things have remained constant. It is sheer dedication, commitment and attention to intricate details that result in the truest of quality. These are the values that the Malaysia Print Awards 2014 recognized and ultimately rewarded.

WHEN Chong Park Kin was a boy, he dreamt of being a pilot. However, as he grew older, he discovered that he had a special hidden talent, an artistic one which his father encour-aged him to pursue. From what he thought was only a mere hobby turned out to be his passion in his teenage years, when he would scribble and doodle in his notebooks. Though he was not alone, he met his peers who also shared the same interest and this helped him to realize that maybe one day, could definitely bring him somewhere.

He drew and drew until he graduated. When the time has come to select an institute to further his studies, he did a thorough research on the art courses being offered in Malaysia and finally, he found the one most compatible with him in the Malaysian Institute of Art. The knowledge of many art-ists nowadays make a good living with their art pieces, it inspired him further. Trying his luck, he gave it a shot, entered the university and it was a decision he did not regret.

He entered the Konica Minolta Student Design Award during the Malaysia Print Awards 2014 and managed to nab a merit placing with his Paullaner Muncher Beer Graffiti. When asked where did he get the inspiration from, his answer was a walk down the memory lane.

Cartoons like the Looney Tunes and Tom & Jerry gave him the inspiration for his bottle design. The decision to use the German beer Paulaner was due to the fact that Oktober-fest was a yearly event in Germany where friends and families would gather to enjoy this drinking tradition. He decided to add these cartoon characteristics to the bottles in hopes that people would always have an interest-ing conversation to engage in, even for the socially awkward.

“I want them to look at the bottle and say, “Eh hey, remember this Tasmanian Devil? From the Looney Tunes? What’s your favourite episode?”. I want to make them remember and give them ideas on what to talk about when hanging out with friends,” said Chong Park Kin.

However, he decided to not just stay in one lane of the art stream. In the future, he hopes to venture into something new whether it will be working a year or two to start his own café or art gallery, or venturing into the music scene, the house music in particular and one day, to become a DJ. In his words, music is not just a one thing, there are terms for it.

“I plan to produce my own music one day.”

This is one of the many examples that the younger generation is an eclectic generation.

GFA Graphics stated that with a direct-on-press workflow, time to press is considerably shorter

and the waste is drastically reduced because the Azura TE plates are cleaned out on-press, the system requires no processor, no chemistry and no water. This also lowers the energy consump-tion and requires less maintenance, thus resulting in environment-friendly oper-ations as well as cost reductions.

“In fact a ‘direct-on-press’ plate is ready for use after exposing on the pla-tesetter”, said Guy Desmet, the Head of Prepress Marketing of Agfa Graphics.

He has mentioned that Azura TE shows an outstanding image contrast thanks to their patented Thermochromic Dye

technology which makes the visual inspection easy and means that dot measurements or plate detection can be done with stan-dard devices. In addition, Azura TE has an excellent daylight stability, which comes in handy if the plates cannot be mounted on the press immediately

The company said that Azura TE does not sacrifice on image quality and pressroom working conditions. Moreover, when mounted on the press, Azura TE behaves very simi-larly to a traditionally processed or chemistry-free plate, limiting the variables in press room opera-tions. The plates clean out rapidly and ink acceptance is immediate, both resulting in sellable sheets after only a few copies.

Desmet adds, “A one year field test period all over the globe taught us that Azura TE is compatible with all Agfa and non-Agfa platesetters, a wide range of founts, inks and press architectures. Customers love the ease of use of Azura TE, the gain in system productivity and the quality on press.”

The characteristic of Agfa Graphics’ Azura chemistry-free and direct-on-press plates is the excellent lithographic behaviour on press, supporting up to 240 lines per inch with Sublima screening. They also stand out due to their printing stability resulting from the elimination of the many vari-ables inherent to a conventionally processed plated.

Azura TE is based on the same ThermoFuseTM technology as its predecessors, working with a single-layer water-based coating, containing ink-accepting latex pearls.

Agfa claims superior perfor-mance with its new plates.

Malaysia, Southeast Asia and Komori KKC will be put into profitable effect and most importantly gain sincere trust and confidence from customers for services and support with the company.

The Komori system shown at the open house shows what today’s print-ing technology can offer printers in terms of equipment planning invest-ment into their printing business and so forth. As Mr C. W. Kok said in his speech,

“The world today, as everyone knows is changing drastically. In the printing industry, the market is experiencing a transformation from traditionally accepted technologies to a more cus-tomized concept.”

UPA Machinery Sdn Bhd opened its arms to ever-evolving new possibilities and opportunities. And with their new collaboration with Komori today, the company is venturing into a very highly,

technologically designed machine called the G Model. G represents “green”, a colour symbolically associated with the preservation of the environment which will of course be a great fit into today’s printing industry.

The G Models that were on demon-stration at the UPA Machinery open house were the GL 440 and LA437 with the latter being the offset printing press that can meet Asian paper size.

Every engagement is a touch point and by that we mean it is right from the time customers purchase their products right to the point of ser-vicing. Every year, HP runs a Total Customer Experi-ence (TCE) survey which is an online survey where customers are invited to give their feedback on all areas of their engagement. Every engagement is a touch point and by that we mean it is right from the time customers purchase their products right to the point of ser-vicing. This even includes the back office because we can all do a good job support-ing the customers but if the back end isn’t doing a good job, the experience is immediately negated. In this sense, we look at it in a whole perspective and so does HP.

P+: Please walk us through on the whole Total Customer Experience.KPH: When a TCE survey is done, they survey the customers on the press, its workflow, supplies etc, on whether they’re getting a good experience and

then they look at the service and sup-port. They also look at whether the sales are doing a job in selling the products all the way to even our finance and back office. For the finance experience, areas like timeliness and accuracy of invoices are reviewed and for the back office they looked at the timeliness in the fulfilment of their supplies and parts requests. So, from the survey done in 2014, Adigiprint has made some prog-ress with improvements in most areas especially on Overall Support Satisfac-tion where 17% of our customers have rated us with a top score of 5. So, for a small family like us it is a big progress because you know, we are not among the big boys in this region and we are not as matured as a lot of the others. All these would not have been possible if not for the strong support from the HP man-agement team.

P+: How does the ADP team work? What are other areas are you looking at in terms of improvement?KPH: I think the essence of our progress was mainly in the area of the closeness of how our people are with the custom-ers. If you look at my service manager, Yon Choon Lim, who has about fifteen years’ experience under his belt in the printing press industry, his experience and his customer rapport, was very key to helping us to achieve what we have achieved so far. But again, a lot of these things will not be sustainable if it’s just based on a few individuals. So, what we are trying to do now is very much to

build capacity and capability. Capabil-ity is definitely something that we need to build over time but capacity is still what we need because we are selling a lot of our presses now. And because they

UNITED FRONT: Standing strong with ServTouch-Wywy.

are big multi-million dollar presses, cus-tomers’ expectations will be very high as every time a press goes down, there goes their production and there won’t be any revenue for the day. This will be upsetting of course.

So, what we have done in the last year is we have doubled our engineer strength in Adigiprint and at the same time on the application side, we have also doubled our engineer strength. So, our next area of focus is to build capability to create depth in our staffs’ knowledge and exposure.

P+: How are trainings done in certain areas and aspects of Adigiprint?KPH: We are focused on HP products, specifically HP Indigo products and the trainings are very structured for our engineers. They have a certain amount of exposure before they can go for the Customer Engineer (CE) training and they have to be certified on the products before they can be allowed to lead and certify installations. If they are not cer-tified, they won’t be allowed to perform the installation. So, there is a road map depending on which product range they are focusing on which is divided into two: commercial printing presses and industrial presses of which both differ.

P+: Where do you see your quality and services of Adigiprint will be in the near future?KPH: Well, we want to build a service excellence culture within ServTouch where Customer Passion comes first. We have small things like this. (Kong Peng Hong pulls up a little badge with the tagline “One Mind One Action.”). This tagline was thought up by one of our sales representative at the time when we had a competition really to propa-gate the idea that we are just one team. All our actions and focus should just be with the customer. So, the whole thing still holds true with us. We even have small things here like a Thank You card that when somebody does a favour on your behalf or does something to help you service a customer better; I mean there is nothing greater than a note of appreciation as we practice service with one another to service the rest out there. We are constantly looking out for each other and that ‘One Mind One Action’ really starts from home.

“So, from the survey done in 2014, Adigiprint has made some progress with improvements in most areas especially on Overall Support Satisfaction where 17% of our customers have rated us with a top score of 5.”

HAT do you get when you put together a friendship of five friends of almost three

decades?NP Bindpac Sdn Bhd., a company

that specializes in Wire-O, hard cover, packaging box and casing in prod-ucts.  Established in 2005, high school friends Sam Ooi, Alex Chai, Alvin Teh, N.H. Low and K.C Chou met up in 2004 during Chinese New Year and came up with the idea of starting a company of their own. Prior to the jobs they were holding before, the five had one thing in common – that they all have been working in paper related jobs.

The first to leave Teluk Intan (where they grew up) was Alex Chai. Alex had left Teluk Intan to explore the printing industry in Kuala Lumpur and worked in a printing press focusing on printing and operating the machines. Absorbing the knowledge and skills gained, he

High-five for NP BindpacFive schoolmates join hands to boost business in packaging and boxes

brought it back with him to Teluk Intan to share: “I was from a printing com-pany so I suggested the idea that they should study about it and we started building the company from there.”

Alex said at that time, Sam started off with transportations of recyclable goods, “Years back when I was 20 years old, I started doing transportations for recyclable goods, but then it started getting difficult, physically. A year

after being in the recycling industry, everyone had worked at a job doing something relating to paper products and I decided to hop on the wagon” mentioned Sam.

NP Bindpac kick-started the company at OUG and is now located in Serdang, servicing smaller printers and in 2010 they had gradually progressed on their biggest investment yet, a Kolbus Case Maker machine. They started with

wire-o binding, producing seasonal cal-endars, magazines and boxes which are put together manually; however, bases of the boxes are printed and the box was assembled manually and progressively branching out to booklets.

Their main services that they now have is wire-o binding and are soon planning to progress into doing book binding. Main clients are mostly print-ers that are in need for wire-o binding. One of their biggest customers is Tele-kom Unifi. NP Bindpac was given the prospect of producing Telekom Unifi ‘Office in a box’. The idea of the ‘Office in a box’ set is that there are four other boxes which when put together created one whole image, “The exterior of the box was not very difficult to do, however, the inside of the box was the biggest

challenge. The exterior was printed and the rest was assembled manually,” said Sam.

When the company was first established, Alex took the position of marketing director. The first machine they had bought was a cheap book binding machine and it wasn’t up to expectations as they were slowly transi-tioning into doing hard covers, therefore taking a risk of investing in a Kolbus machine. “The decision of investing into getting a Kolbus was because of the faultiness of the previous machines that they first got when they started. It was not able to deliver an end result that was satisfying. In that case, they had to reconsider the use of another machine which was why they had to make the big jump in investment,” mentioned William, managing director of NGE Machinery Services Sdn Bhd. The Kolbus machine was chosen also because the comfort, reliability and speed that it produces. “Having the Kolbus machine made a lot of difference. With the speed and precision, it is able to give not only us satisfactory results but also to cus-tomers,” said Alvin, director of Nets Group of Companies.

In 2014, NP Bindpac opted to explore with the James Burn machine, the JBI EX600. “All the machines that they have are auto machines. With so many machines, we chose James Burn because it was fully auto,” said Ooi.  The James Burn machine is used for Wire-O Bind-ing, whereas Kolbus is used for hard case covers, so they both have different func-tions. They have manufactured products like the ‘Old Town White Coffee’ and ‘Sushi King’ menus.

They have done several seasonal packaging items for mooncakes but they don’t produce it as often as the cost of making it is high. When asked about what we would foresee from NP Bindpac in the future, ‘To focus on packaging and boxes.’

LITHRONE G40‘Green’ is symbolical with the coexistence of the environment, people and nature. A mutually beneficial balance among these three elements ensuring a bright future. This concept was the genesis of the Lithrone G40’s development- a high-performance machine created with consid-eration for the environment and ecology.

The Lithrone G40 press delivers a very stable high-speed operation with sheet thickness of 0.04mm to 0.08 mm. On another note, the LG40 is designed to reduce environmental impact as they are produced in Komori’s green manufacturing environment.

Equipped with the KHS-AI integrated control system, the PDC-SX Spectral Print Density Control-SX*, and the PQA-S Print Quality Assessment system for sheet fed presses, the LG40 maintains high print quality with today’s less experienced operators. Along with the fusion of the KHS-AI integrated control system and the H-UV* drying system, this shortens make-ready time, cuts paper waste and reduces printing time while maintaining the high print quality and high productivity that are the core characteristics of the offset printing machine, both the ulti-mate short-run competence and short job cycle times will evidently be achieved satisfactorily.

LITHRONE A37The Komori LA37 is able to meet a wide range of printing needs with a maximum sheet size of 640mm x 940mm and since colour management can be implemented by including a CMS colour bar on sheets even with 8-up A4 and American letter size impositions, the Lithrone A37

is the ideal machine for producing high page-count products with high print quality.

What is more is that this machine is compact with lower initial costs and a lower life-cycle cost and

is capable of being upgraded with a wide range of options, including H-UV to name one. The work efficiency can be substantially improved by equipping the press with any of the available wide range options, such as H-UV ultra-fast drying system, the KHS-AI integrated control system, the PDC-LITE II scanning density control

system or various automatic cleaning systems.

UPA Machinery has since adopted the green concept in conjunction with their title as the sole distributor for Komori Corporation. Among the machines that were on demonstration at the UPA Machinery Open

After coming to KL and seeing different companies doing digital printing cards, Ooi thought of it as an interesting way of print and was keen to do it and has stuck to doing it up until today.

It is known that Dot To Dot Digital Image Sdn Bhd special-izes in advertising and digital inkjet print and projects that they have done have been countless by far. The company caters to a lot of events for example like in Putrajaya (Gov-ernment Agencies), Ad Agencies and corporate customers where there were events and shows. However, during the past two years, they have molded them-selves into something more complex and sophisticated which requires a lot of “think-ing out of the box” and skills due to the market transforma-tion which has put the priority of prices first instead of quality. Nowadays with the tendency to focus more on prices instead

time to be completed. “You are not given much time and we’re not even talking about months, we’re talking about days. As you know in the market now, every-thing has turned into digital, and when people don’t appreci-ate quality anymore, it becomes all about money and we’re talk-ing about speed. I think we are at the point of transition, and be it a very complex transition,” said Ooi. Challenges are many and it is a complex market and with new technologies arising and arising fast, and transitions are fast, there is hardly that moment to be able to learn how to really appreciate the art of it.

“I think the most challenging part is not only in our business but also any businesses out there. A lot of people have asked me ‘why digital print?’ and I tell them that we are on the right track because of the environ-ment we live in and how it has become fast paced, and so we need to be fast or move as fast

OT To Dot Digital Image Sdn Bhd started in 1996 focusing mainly on doing black and white name cards. After many years, the company expanded and has continuously changed through-

out the years up until today. They have expanded by having four outlets with their main major business of “Everything Digital” which KC Ooi director of Dot-to-Dot, strongly believes in.

of quality and with this issue expanding in the printing industry, the more they have to really dig deep into the creativ-ity side of it in order to create products that are sophisticated as products created requires a lot of time develop.

However, simultaneously with the projects that are given, not all projects have the given

to keep up with the market,” Ooi added. This justifies the reason why Dot To

Dot spends a lot of time developing new things that every six months things at their office is changed as they want to be able to keep up and move at that speed together with their new products, projects and technology because if they don’t, it is a difficult task to sustain for another two to three years as cycles of products can take up two to three years as well. Having only started purely as an all-digital company in 1996, they have started to build their own software and we would think that with necessities for having an all-digital printing that are needed that it would usually be done within a month, However, to fully grasp and process and learn this new software, it has taken five months to prepare, in other words, it has been a tiresome pro-cess that has been worth building on.

In a company with 50 staff members including installation teams, design-ers etc., Ooi spends the time he has by motivating his staff and giving them hope that they are headed to places and beyond. Dot-to-Dot is an in-house com-pany and they import everything that

differentiate each unique photographer. When asked about the future and

the challenges that they foresee in the future, Ooi said: “Being already in the mode of transformation, we have learned to enjoy just doing it. I don’t want to be years behind but instead to gradually move together with time. The trick is to keep on investing, transform-ing and changing.”

But it is a challenge however as time required to spend is a lot and the world is revolving faster and faster each day and it is not only about knowing how to do, but the integration between the skills that they’ve known and their mar-keting tools.

they need. Dot-to-Dot uses the Konica Minolta C8000 and the C70hc which does the majority of their digital print-ing. “I think that what Konica Minolta has managed to do is that their man-aging strategy is right. They have built the right machine, it is affordable and the quality and stability of the machine is robust” mentioned Ooi. They have been using the Konica Minolta C70hc machine for over a year now and what they have grown fond with the C70hc is that the result of vibrant colours. One of the main key points of photos are the colours and what they aim for is quality and Konica Minolta’s C70hc has proved the vibrancy in colours in photographs.

“The C70hc is using the high Chroma Technology and also the capability of printing RGB file with wider colour gamut. At the same time the powder technology is finer and with the right colour calibration, the vibrancy of the colors are enhanced which is exactly what we want. That is why we are happy and satisfied to be using Konica’s C70hc, especially for the photobooks,” said Ooi.

However, the photobook is only a small part of what they are doing. The C70hc can handle very light colour and the same can print very solid black colour (as the black colour is very dif-ficult to print), that is the beauty of the machine.

Ooi added that: “Everything is in-house built, that is the beauty of digital, and you must have the right equipment and the skills to know how to use it.”

With Dot-to-dot, they are able to do branding for photographers and the photobooks that they produce by being able to customize according to the pho-tographers, so what they do is that they customize is to how the photographers specifically want it branded to be able to

ETEOR Doc. was delighted to present its latest and proud-est achievement yet, their

goal of reaching 100 million prints for each unit of Canon’s Océ Vario Print 6160, all in all, 200 million prints with two units of the Océ Vario Print 6160.

“Beyond the Ordinary” as Océ’s motto, they have definitely proved that they have gone and done beyond the ordinary with their 100 million mark at Meteor Doc.

Meteor Doc. is known to be a highly specialized Digital Printing and Cross-Media Company within the Meteor Group of Companies framework. In addition to servicing their printing needs to their sister company, Open University of Malaysia, Meteor Doc. is the creative wing for Meteor Group of Companies and their focus is on provid-ing creative solutions to make visions a reality.

A little insight to the Océ Vario Print 6160; with its high speed Océ print-ing systems, it produces millions of transaction documents such as bank

statements and utility bills.  This machine is designed for scalability and is built for easy interoperability. With the ability to print on both sides of a sheet of paper in a single pass with the speed of up to 314 images per minute which can power through heavy-duty volumes of up to 10 million images per month. Features consist of a 170ppm A4 size and 88ppm A3 size, 300,000 up to 2.5 million monthly volume and a 4,600 sheet capacity.

In addition to that, it is an eco-friendly business whereby the Océ VarioPrint 6160 systems will only con-sume up to 40% less energy and has no traits of selenium, developer or fuser oil.

With Meteor Doc. reaching their 100

million prints for each unit, one of the main questions pondering our minds is the matter of, time, which we all fight for. In this case, with ultra-speed and versatility together with generous input and output capacity and reliable operation, the Océ VarioPrint 6000  will let you power through aggressive dead-lines. Meteor Doc has staff that are well versed with the machines as they have been using it for a long period of time.

In Meteor Doc., an obstacle in their way is seen to be handled by looking at it as what the director of Meteor Doc.  Ahmadzulkarnain Ramli called “a learning curve”. “We try to fix what-ever obstacles we are faced with, but along the way it is not really a hard time because we take it as a learning process,” he said.

He added that with new machines being brought in, challenges faced are many, but one of the few would be how the operators and staff cope with learn-ing a new set of machines.  With the Océ VarioPrint 6000, it is easily integrated into existing workflows. With the many skillful operators that Meteor Doc has, it was an easy task when the machine was first introduced to the operators.  Train-ing was provided when the machine

was first introduced and with the opera-tors at Meteor Doc, they picked up the use of the machine easily.

Meteor Doc has worked with Canon for the past 10 years and have developed a strong partnership.

After 10 years of using Canons’ Océ machines and discovering the reliability of their machines, it will always be Océ that they will choose due to the comfort and peak reliability which has clearly been proved with the 100 million prints per machine.

Being in this industry, it is known that offset and digital printing have their own sets of pros and cons.  Ahmad-zulkarnain added: “When you have high volumes, it is a better choice to use offset machines as it saves time. However, on

the downside, if you compare digital offset, they require specialized techni-cians who know and understand the machines from its colors to the operat-ing system to the maintenance of the machine. Whereas for digital printing, it is somewhat similar to using a pho-tocopying machine.”

When it comes to customer require-ments and in terms of costing, especially to those who are keen on taking on a smaller volume or a customized content, digital printing would be their choice.

As mentioned above how time is what we all fight for, one of the few Meteor Doc. key selling point is their ability and willingness to take up jobs with tight deadlines. But fret not as the results on the output produced has been very satisfactory. Reason being is the confidence that they have in the machine that they are able to deliver to their customers’ request. With the com-bination of power, velocity and amazing scalability that helps turn more jobs around faster, the Océ VarioPrint 6000 system can be field-upgraded on-site, either permanently or temporarily to keep pace with the ever changing busi-ness needs.

With its certified guarantee of a

hundred billion print, the Océ Vari-oPrint 6000 and its ability to take in large volume of prints, It is certain that Meteor Doc will abide to the vision that they have established -  to be the leading company in printing that ensures high quality products and services.

Shooting Stars: Meteor Doc with pride.

Flashing grins: Ahmadzulkarnain Ramli with another Canon Oce that has reached 100 million prints.

“We try to fix whatever obstacles we are faced with, but along the way it is not really a hard time because we take it as a learning process.”

Woman at work

FROM Print Com’s day-to-day operations to creative concepts, print-ing and finishing, Christy Hing has demonstrated the true meaning of girl power and she does it all with style and grace, always with an

award winning smile. The Print + team walked into Wisma Central, Jalan Ampang where Print Com is located to chat with one of Malaysia Print Awards 2014 winner.

P+: Tell us what is Print Com all about?CH: We started in year 2011 right here in Wisma Central. Right now, we’ve just expanded our operations with another outlet just upstairs. We are a digital print pro-vider but besides that, we provide more of added-value

services for our customers. Not only in printing solu-tions but we go on to design solutions, creative concepts and directions as well. What really makes us different from the other operations here is that I, myself come from an advertising background. So, in that sense we

caught up! I then decided to venture into some-

thing a little less hectic and wanted to focus less on events as it required a lot of time, sometimes in the wee hours. Doing events does take up 24 hours. I just like it more subtle now and working hour operations. That’s how we decided to diversify into what I’m doing the best. I mean it’s still advertising solutions but I just don’t have to be so hectic.

P+: Any other machines besides Konica Minolta since Print Com’s inception? Take us through your very first year of operations.CH: Oh no, I’ve always stuck with Konica Minolta. What we are using is the Konica Minolta C6000 bizhub press. I think it’s a great product printing solution. When we started to build the business relationship with Konica Minolta, they were still growing and they are still very new as well. So it was a growing process done together. I feel that it’s fate that we just came at a very right time together in terms of the digital printing industry.

Now it has become very competitive, I must say. I am very proud to say that we have been doing great ever since we started.

Konica Minolta has been more than just the machine supplier to me. I really see them as a business partner. When I first started out, I went through really tough times. There were days where I didn’t have any operators, I had staff that had gone AWOL. I wasn’t even familiar with the system yet. Thank god Devin aka Koo Chong Ho came and just helped me with whatever I needed with the jobs and operations! This is so much more than just a supplier-customer relationship.

P+: What is your 2015 goal for Print Com?CH: It’s very interesting and very chal-lenging, as I mentioned we just took up another lot upstairs and we are going to move into online print solutions to target a different demographics from what we are serving right now. So this is my goal starting 2015.

are very active and aggressive in terms of the marketing campaign and that makes us value what we do.

P+: Wow! Why the switch from adver-tising to printing?CH: Well, that’s a good question. I’ve always loved advertising. I do have the flare and it’s such a glamorous indus-try but I was in it for a very long time. In fact, my very first job was in an advertising agency and within a year I managed to form my own agency and have been servicing corporate clients. It’s very hands on with client servicing and after many years in it, it started becoming a little taxing. Age

features available, a more productive workflow is created that allow consum-ers to move from one photobook project to the next seamlessly.

Ricoh Pro™ C5100S Digital Color Pro-duction Printer brings Flexibility and High Image Quality to Light Production Market. The light production model, Ricoh Pro™ C5100S is a versatile choice for Central Reprographics Department (CRD) seeking high quality in-house print capability or digital and quick printers. It is ideal for the production of on demand prestigious marketing material, collateral, photobooks or client mailings.  It features a new toner for-mulation and broad media handling. In addition, the small footprint makes it ideal where space is limited.

With Ricoh’s newly developed toner formulation, it has increased its colour gamut by 10 per cent for the Pro™ C5100S. The toner has also been devel-oped to fuse at a lower temperature, meeting Ricoh’s R&D focus to continu-ally reduce the environmental impacts of its products wherever possible. This in turn also ensures a quicker warm up time for increased productivity.

The Ricoh Pro™ C5100S are also the first Ricoh digital production printers to feature enhanced toner transfer tech-nology which delivers high quality print results on heavily textured stock – ideal for direct mail and marketing applica-tions. Media flexibility is a hallmark of this model, with a new fuser assembly which uses information from the media library to optimise the fuser tempera-ture and pressure combination for each substrate. This technology is ideal for printing challenging applications such as envelopes, where the balance of

pressure and heat is critical to maintain a flat and perfectly printed product.

Media flexibility is highlighted further by the ability to print banners up to 1260mm in length through the advanced settings, adding to the wide range of applications options.

Among the new technologies is the new FS100 platform from EFI Fiery, which is used for the new E42B server.  It delivers professional colour management and a fast ripping speed for improved productivity as well as an enhanced Media Library for the

storage and recall of a wide range of substrates.

Ricoh has also ensured the Pro™ C5100S is optimised for productivity and improved uptime. LED indica-tors and synchronised animated instructions act as a helpful guide for operators should they need to intervene during a print run. In addi-tion there is a variety of status lights to keep the operator continually informed. On-the-fly toner replen-ishment will also help to maintain productivity.

You can’t deny that video is indeed a great tool to help you grow your reach and potentially your customer base. It is the only device equalizer – meaning your site might not look the best on a smartphone or tablet, but your video wont. And the best thing is that people aren’t expecting a state of the art James Cameron film from small businesses. It’s about being real, showing honesty and highlighting who you are as a busi-ness. At the end of the day, it is about showing who you are and not telling them what you do.

Take a look at the content of the world’s infamous online video plat-form Youtube for instance, with a crazy number of viral videos with basically anything as subject; why not Print have a part of it. Have fun! Do an about us video or even a weekly comedic series with the clowns in your offices. It’s time we write a brand new chapter in today’s evolving world. And so, I conclude.
