Introduction The QuickLabel Systems’ Kiaro! digital label printer is capable of printing high-resolution labels at high-speeds, and can do so intelligently. QuickLabel Systems also provides Custom QuickLabel, a software program used for designing and printing labels. There are several benefits to using Custom QuickLabel versus Third-Party software applications. When printing from Custom QuickLabel, the label content is cropped to the selected label shape and dimensions, saving on ink and usage of the printer as well as providing a cleaner output. See the examples below:

Fillet printed from Custom QuickLabel

Fillet printed from 3rd Party Software

Round printed from Custom QuickLabel

Round printed from 3rd Party Software

Custom QuickLabel will optimize printing of individual jobs and queues of multiple jobs containing variable data, resulting in faster time-to-print and overall throughput improvement.

Through the Kiaro! Windows driver, one can print from other software applications. This technical bulletin will provide details on configuring a number of popular applications to print to the Kiaro!.

1) When ready to print, go to “File…” and then select “Print…”

2) Ensure the correct printer is selected from the drop-down menu next to “Name”.

3) Click on the “Document Properties…”

4) Ensure the correct label format is selected in the Kiaro! driver

5) If the correct label format is not already created, it will need to be now. Click on “Manage Labels…”

6) Input the corresponding label settings, give the label a recognizable name, and hit “add”. If a label format needed modification, simply select “modify” instead of “add” and then click “ok”.

7

7) Ensure the correct label format is selected in the prior menu, as this is not done by default.

8) Once the correct label size settings are in place, click on the appearance tab. BarTender is by default set to let the application manage colors, instead of preferably letting the driver do so. Note the radio button defaulted to “application managed” below.

8

9) Return to the print window and then click “Print”.

10) Note: When opening an existing file that had been saved to a printer other than the Kiaro!, error messages will occur that

will default the printer settings to the default printer in the operating system, which may not be the Kiaro!

11) Verify the “Print…” menu and “Document Properties…” settings before printing. This will inform a user if the software is

correctly communicating with the appropriate driver and is prepared to print. Below, the default printer is a networked office printer, not the Kiaro! and would thus need to be changed.

Loftware – Design 32 Application 1) Open/Create a new label file. The New Media Wizard will present a screen to pick a device to print to. The Manufacturer

should be set to “Windows Printers” and the Model will have a drop-down menu that will show a list of all the printers that are installed locally. Select the appropriate Kiaro! printer from the list and click “Next”.

2) In this screen, change the defaulted values for the Media Width and Height to the Label Width and Label Length. Click next, then finish.

3) Go to File > Media Setup…

4) In this screen, continue to ensure the defaulted values for the Media Width and Height have been replaced with the correct Label Width and Label Length. Ensure the Manufacturer is set to “Windows Printers”, Model is set to the appropriate Kiaro! printer, and resolution is set to 1200. Then click on “Configure Devices…”.

5) In this screen, if all the fields are blank, create an entry in row 1. Set Family to Windows, select the appropriate printer in Model, and select the appropriate port the printer is plugged into in Port. Then click “Options…”

6) In this screen, check off “Paper Size” and select the correct label size setting from the driver in the drop-down menu. If the correct label size setting is not already saved in the driver, it must be created before being selectable in this menu. If so, click on the “Printer Control Panel” button on the right, then click OK in the warning that follows. This will open the printer driver in the OS.

7) Click on “Preferences…”

Codesoft 2012 1) Open or create a new label file. If creating a new label, the New Label Document Wizard will appear and present a screen to

pick a device to print to. If the “current printer” is not the desired printer, select the appropriate printer from the “Windows Printer” drop-down menu and click “Next”.

2) The next screen in the wizard prompts the user to select a stock type. This choice is superfluous, and so click “Next”.

Page 51: Printing with the Kiaro! - · PDF filePrinting with the Kiaro! Third-Party Software . June 14 An Astro-Med, Inc. Product Group 600 East Greenwich Ave. ... Loftware – Design 32 Application

51

3) The next two screens in the wizard prompts the user for the label size and page properties. “Label Size” represents the actual label width and length. “Label layout” can be utilized for multi-up/across label rolls, and the associated horizontal and vertical gaps represent the spacing between the labels on the roll. The “page size” is really a selection of the label sizes saved in the windows driver. If the correct option is not available at the time of label creation, it can be created and corrected afterwards. Finally, the left margin of .0625” represents the edge-trim for the roll of media used for this demonstration and centers the label on the roll. Notice the software rounded the value to .062” but should not affect the printed output.

4) The second to last screen in the wizard prompts for a background image to be embedded in the label file and is optional.

5) The last screen in the wizard recaps the label settings. Click “Finish”.

6) Insert content on the label as needed. Wizards for each element will pop-up upon trying to place the label content. Options

for inserting text and images are shown below from left to right.

7) Once the label content is complete, the next step is to ensure the printer settings are correct. Go to “File”, then “Select

Printer”, and select the appropriate printer in the list. Then select “Settings…” in the top-right corner.

8) Ensure the correct label format is selected in the Kiaro! driver

9) If the correct label format is not already created, it will need to be now. Click on “Manage Labels…”

Page 54: Printing with the Kiaro! - · PDF filePrinting with the Kiaro! Third-Party Software . June 14 An Astro-Med, Inc. Product Group 600 East Greenwich Ave. ... Loftware – Design 32 Application

54

10) Input the corresponding label settings, give the label a recognizable name, and click “add”. If a label format needed modification, simply select “modify” instead of “add” and then click “ok”.

11) Now that the correct printer is selected and the label settings are set in the driver, we can tell the software to print. Go to “File” and “Print…”. Increasing the copies of each page will send the label one time but print multiple times, whereas increasing the label quantity will send the label multiple times ( possibly negatively impacting the time it takes to print all the labels in the job). Once a decision is made on how to send multiple copies or multiple jobs, click the “Print” button to initiate the start of printing.

EasyLabel 6 1) Open or create a new label file. If creating a new label, a window will appear to pick a name for the label file and where to

save it. Navigate to the desired location, name the label file and click “Add”.

2) The next window in the wizard prompts the user to select a printer and define other label settings. Select the appropriate printer in the “Printer model” drop-down. Ensure you select the appropriate printer in the “Default Printer” drop-down menu as well.

3) In the next tab “Printer Settings”, ensure the correct resolution is set. In this instance, the Kiaro! printer is capable of

printing up to 1200dpi but was set to 600dpi by default.

4) Next, go to the “Page Layout” tab. Select a “Paper Size” from the drop-down which displays all the saved label sizes in the printer driver. If the correct option is not available at the time of label creation, it can be created and corrected afterwards. Ensure the “printable area width” and “printable area height” are set to the correct “label width” and “label length”. The left margin represents the outside edge-trim on the label, but is rounded from .0625” to .06” but should not affect the printed output. When finished, click “OK”.
