formed in 1982 to support the Department

of prints and Drawings in its efforts to offer

educational programs and to further enrich

the Mia’s permanent collection. Council

exhibition tour of “Wordscapes: text as image in Contemporary art”Thursday, September 24, 2009

MIA curator Dennis Michael Jon will lead a gallery tour of this new exhibition, which explores the conceptual and pictorial interaction of text and image in art from the 1960s to the present. Works by Jasper Johns, Bruce Nauman, Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein, John Baldessari, Ed Ruscha, Cy Twombly, Lesley Dill, May Stevens, and Glenn Ligon are among those featured.

In conjunction with the special exhibition “The Louvre and the Masterpiece” (October 18, 2009, through January 10, 2010), MIA curators Thomas Rassieur, Rachel McGarry, Lisa Michaux, and Dennis Michael Jon will conduct private tours of the prints and drawings in three permanent-collection exhibitions: “In Pursuit of a Masterpiece” (U.S. Bank Gallery), “From Dürer to Picasso: Selections from the Department of Prints and Drawings” (Galleries 315 and 316), and “The Night Sky in the Age of Vermeer: The Astronomer in Context” (Gallery 344).

Ten nationally prominent art dealers will offer an extensive array of works on paper for private purchase, ranging from Old Masters to contemporary. The selection will include original prints, drawings, pastels, watercolors, and artist’s books, with prices starting at about $200.

Thomas Rassieur, the John E. Andrus III Curator of Prints and Drawings, will examine works on paper from the MIA’s collection within the context of objects on view in the special exhibition “The Louvre and the Masterpiece.” He will discuss diverse artists such as Albrecht Dürer, François Boucher, and Antoine-Louis Barye.
