Pool table brings back memories
A founding member of the now two-year-old Senior Men’s
Pool League at the Herman Prior Activity Centre (HPAC), Bob
Demman has memories of one of the two snooker tables there
that date back decades.
The actual age of the table is unknown, but if the pockets could
talk, what a tale they could tell! It is understood the table came
to the HPAC from its roots at Gorrai’s Pool Room.
Demman says his father played on the tables at HPAC, and
maybe at Gorrai’s, too. Now well into his 70s, Demman can
recall playing on what is to be believed to be an antique
Brunswick table when he was playing hookey from school in
the mid 1950s.
Gorrai’s Pool Room was on Saskatchewan Ave. just east of
what was then Narvie’s Clothing Store (the precursor to
Barney’s which shuttered in 2019).

Tool Library: Busy Board workshop
Sunday, March 29 1 – 4 p.m. in Crocus Room These are great activities for young children and people with dementia. We are looking for donations of pieces for the boards. Things like latches, locks with keys, hinges, etc. Cost will be based on the items you use on your busy board.
TOOL LIBRARY HELP NEEDED Volunteers needed to: sort tools and label tools,
organize tool shop and to work for one hour on

helping with any of these would interest you.

away, and so they made it happen. The centre only had to
contribute about $100. Fantastic! Job done.”
The league meets every Tuesday and Thursday morning.
There are almost enough spares to perhaps expand the league.
It is important that it doesn’t cut into golf season.
“It’s a wonder I didn’t carve my name into it, at least my
initials,” said Demman. “I missed a bit of school likely
playing on that table. There were a lot of guys who would go
to Gorrai’s after school and when they didn’t go to school,”
he chuckled.
“They had two rooms in Gorrai’s, five tables in one room
and five or six in the other. There was a hallway in between
where the guy who setup the balls sat. They had spittoons
hardly anyone ever managed to hit,” Demman recollected.
“Just after I left high school they shut down. There were
other pool rooms that started up over the years at different
places.
“That table is in very good shape for the age it is. I would
have to guess the table is 75-years-old. Gorrai’s was going
long before I was going there so I would guess it (the table)
is from the 1940s.
The league is filling a needed niche. “The first year we had
about 26 players and we have grown to 32 players plus
spares. I hope we get more,” Demman said. “There’s a lot of
pool players around here who probably haven’t played since
school. This is a good place to get the dust off your shot and
meet a few new people. Now that they are retired and if you
coax them we can get them out.”
In this day and age where not much gets done in a public
place unless there is a grant, the members of the league
proved they are men of action.
“The one table was in rough shape,” explains Chris Dumont,
the centre’s executive director. “It needed new rails and a
cloth and it wasn’t in the Herman Prior’s budget. The league
stepped up and raised the money for the repair. Two of the
members even stayed and helped with the installation!
“The cost of upgrading the one table amounted to just over
$1,100. The men felt it was something they wanted done
right

Gardening help We are looking for helpers to come in and start tomato and pepper seeds in our rolling planters, and to water and nurture them. In the spring, we will continue to grow a few of them for the kitchen, but have a plant sale with some of them.

Selkirk MB will host the next Manitoba 55+ Games, June 16-18, 2020.
Since 1983, the Manitoba Society of Seniors (MSOS) had proudly hosted the annual 55+ Games in a different community in Manitoba each year. In 2012, the torch and spirit of the Games was placed in the capable hands of the Active Living Coalition for Older Adults in Manitoba (ALCOA-MB) – now Active Aging in Manitoba (AAIM). Over 25 age-friendly events will attract more than 1000 athletes, 300 volunteers and many more spectators to 3 days of fun. If you have never been, this is one celebration you will not want to miss!
The Games are the largest 55+ annual multi-sport event in Manitoba, breaking the common stereotype that seniors don’t stay active into their 60s, 70s and 80s. In fact, the oldest male and female athletes are both well over 90 years old. Many other participants have been bit by the “Games bug” and continue to visit the Games every year no matter where the event is held.
Events range from card games to scrabble, snooker, floor curling/shuffleboard, track, swimming and slo-pitch. Slo-pitch is the largest event at the Games, drawing close to 15 teams every year. The 3 days of activities makes from some fun and enjoyable competition for participants and spectators alike!
The Games, while emphasizing active, recreational activities, are also about providing a social and cultural atmosphere through entertainment and social events. A Variety Concert is held on the Tuesday night and an Athletes’ Banquet allows the participants a chance to mingle on Wednesday night. The banquet includes a dinner, dance and speeches by local dignitaries. Past banquet speakers included a special appearance from Lloyd Robertson.
If you wish to register for an event, you can fill out a registration form and send it to their office. Registration will begin in March and forms can be found on the website or by calling the Games office at 204-261-9257.
If you have any questions about the Manitoba 55+ Games, please feel free to contact the Games office at 204-261-9257 or email [email protected].
Registration for the 2020 Manitoba 55+ Games will open in March 2020
