sacrifice bunt in the third inning – “That was on my own,” she said. “The situation was good for a bunt.” – Kallal came back with a three-run homer in a nine-run fourth that ended the game.

From the only two of nine successive plate appearances that did not result in a home run, Kallal bunted to move runners along despite no bunt sign from the third-base coach’s box. “Those,” Sievers said with a laugh, “did not come from me.”

Still, the Warriors coach appreciated Kallal’s team-first thinking during a day that could have had Kallal thinking me first.

“That’s something our team is going to stress all year,” Sievers said. “Get a runner on, move them over and then try to get a hit. I guess that was in the back of her mind dur-ing the midst of her hot streak. But that kind of thinking is good for our team.”

But there would be no more bunting for Kallal in the title game against an Illini West team that came in at 11-1. Kallal drove in Sydney Baalman and Sophie Lorton with a three-run homer in the first inning. The Warriors batted around and Kallal was up again in the first with Baalman and Lorton again on base for another Kallal three-run shot. No. 7 came in the third inning with Kallal’s leadoff homer and her epic after-noon was complete.

“It was nuts,” Kallal said of the reaction from her teammates. “They were all like, wow, what did you eat for breakfast?”

From page 1B

Kallal

manager Mike Shildt said.Cardinals shortstop Paul DeJong, who

drove in two runs, enjoyed the show.“He’s a leader and a legend in this uni-

form,” DeJong said. “For us to be out there competing (with him) is a true honor. We were all engaged looking at him.”

The Padres hadn’t swept a series in St. Louis since 1980, and Wainwright (1-0) pre-vented it from happening this time at Busch Stadium.

The 37-year-old gave up one run and five hits. He struck out nine and didn’t issue a

walk while throwing 100 pitches. The longtime star of the St. Louis rotation

was injured for most of last season, going just 2-4 in eight starts. He struggled in his first outing this year, giving up four runs on four hits and four walks in four innings at Pittsburgh.

“I knew coming into today I needed to be in a better place mentally,” Wainwright said. “When I’m good mentally, I’m usually pretty good physically.”

Wainwright struck out two in four of his six innings.

“The stuff was definitely there,” San Diego first baseman Eric Hosmer said. “He looked good. You can tell he’s feeling pretty healthy.”

Hosmer had an RBI single in the third for the Padres, who had won three in a row. San

Diego’s other four hits off Wainwright were doubles.

Jordan Hicks recorded four outs for his first save in two chances. He struck out Manny Machado with a runner on to end the eighth.

“He’s got unbelievable talent,” Hicks said of Machado. “But I know I’m good as well.”

DeJong drove in a pair of runs with a fourth-inning double off Matt Strahm (0-2). Matt Carpenter walked and Paul Gold-schmidt reached when left fielder Hunter Renfroe lost the ball in the sun. Renfroe was given an error on the play.

Carpenter added a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the seventh. Kolten Wong and Jose Martinez began the inning with back-to-back singles.

Greg Shashack | The TelegraphMarquette Catholic’s Jada Johnson, shown during a game earlier this season in Alton, had six hits and seven RBIs in Explorers’ wins over Belleville Althoff and Steeleville on Saturday in Steeleville.

eight runs in the first inning, tacked on seven more in the sec-ond and finished off the Knights with five in the third. MEL com-mitted nine errors.

Jersey’s Shelby Koenig and Leah Link each pitched two innings for a combined one-hit-ter. Koenig got the win, striking out four and walking none while giving a hit in two innings. Link fanned two and walked one in two hitless innings.

Sydney Gillis had two hits and three RBIs, Melissa Weishaupt and Grace Sharich each had two hits and two RBIs, Koenig had two hits, and Sharich and Lau-ren Rexing drove in two runs apiece in the Panthers’ 14-hit attack.

Marquette wins two – The Explorers lashed out 37 hits while rolling past Belleville Althoff 10-5 and Steeleville 13-6 for two victories in Steeleville. Marquette takes a 10-1 record to Monday’s game at Edwardsville.

The top four hitters in the Explorers’ lineup – Kiley Kirchner, Hayley Porter, Jada Johnson and Kyra Green – com-bined to go 14-for-18 against the Crusaders in the first game. Kirchner and Porter both had four hits, Green had three hits

and three RBIs and Johnson had three hits and two RBIs. Taylor Whitehead added two hits and two RBIs for Marquette. Mur-phy Youngblood got the win, allowing five runs (one earned) on nine hits, two walks and no strikeouts.

Against Steeleville, the Explorers trailed 1-0 after one before scoring in each of the last six innings. Kirchner had another four-hit game with two RBIs, while Johnson had three hits with a triple, a home run and five RBIs. Green and Abi-gail Porter both had three hits

and winning pitcher Whitehead added two hits. Whitehead gave up six runs on five hits, includ-ing two homers, and five walks with 13 strikeouts.

Carrollton loses twice – The Hawks’ unbeaten start came to an end with a pair of losses at the Beardstown Tournament. Camp Point Central beat the Hawks 3-0 and Carthage Illini West beat the Hawk 4-3 in eight innings. Carrollton is 10-2.

Central pitcher Makayla Crim limited the Hawks to three sin-gles while throwing a shutout. Carrollton’s Marley Mullink was

tagged with the loss after allow-ing three runs (two earned) on four hits, five walks and four strikeouts.

Illini West scored a run in the eighth to win it after tying it 3-3 with two runs in the fifth inning. IW outhit the Hawks 9-5, but had to overcome four errors. Katie Heath had two of Car-rollton’s hits. Hannah Rhoades went all eight innings, giving up four runs (two earned), and sustained the loss.

GIRLS SOCCERBreese Mater Dei 5, Roxa-

na 1 – Faith Rackers, hat trick led the Knights past the Shells in Breese. Mater Dei, which led 3-1 at halftime, is 6-7-1. Roxana is 2-8-1.

TRACKNorthwestern Invite – East

Alton-Wood River sophomore Jayden Ulrich broke her own school record in the shot put with a throw of 44 feet, 1 ½ inches to win the event in Cedar Hill, Missouri. Ulrich was runner-up in the discus at 118-3. LeighAnn Nottke also set an EA-WR record by run-ning the 300 hurdles in 49.82 seconds to place fifth.

Both Ulrich and Nottke also ran a leg on the Oilers sprint medley with Faith VanHoose and Niyah Johnson that turned in another school record.
