It’s hard to believe that a newschool year is just about to start. The staff at St. Michael is lookingforward to another Blue Ribbonyear. This prestigious awardwhich can only be received everyfive years spurs them on to con-tinue to keep St Michael School aschool to which we are all proudto be a part .

This year they are fortunate toretain all of their faculty andstaff. The faculty is on the cuttingedge of a new way of teachingwhich changes the emphasisfrom how the teacher teaches towhat the students are learning. This is a major paradigm shift

where educators work collabora-tively to insure high levels oflearning for all.

Traditionally the classroomteacher is responsible for every-thing that takes place in the class-room. The teacher makes all thedecisions about what to teach(Within the guidelines of themandated curriculum), how toteach it and how to assess it.

Teachers have traditionallycollaborated on such things asfield trips, duties, recess etc. Thechange is that teams of teacherswork collaboratively to identifywhat we want our students tolearn. Once they identify what

they want their students to learn, they use common assessments todetermine if they are in factlearning or if more time and sup-port needed for the student’slearning.

Thanks to our PTO, St.Michael has been able to sendover half the staff to the confer-ence in St Charles, Mo. toenhance their understanding ofand commitment to this concept.

They have begun the journeyto establishing St Michael Schoolas a professional learning com-munity. This collaboration of thefaculty and staff to work interde-pendently to insure student

learning will assure that StMichael School continues to be aschool of excellence.

It is vital to show enthusiasmfor learning itself and not simplyfor what the student is expectedto learn.

The reality is that our childrenare enthusiastic about learning ifwe as parents and teachers areenthusiastic about learning. When children see us as life longlearners, grounded in faith, theywill want to become life longlearners as well.

St. Michael looks forward to Blue Ribbon year

Recent studies indicatethat a majority of Catholicparents are overwhelm-ingly choosing schoolsthat are small, have astrong Catholic identity, and provide a safe envi-ronment. St. Bernard, which is situated at thecorner of Springdale andHarrison in the communi-ty of Taylor Creek, isproud to provide thesethree features. They striveto create a community inwhich Christ is knownand loved and where thetruths of the Catholic faithare lived. They believethat the size of our classesprovides an environmentwhere parents, teachersand students personallyknow each other. In turnthis helps to provide asafe environment andenables a quality Catholiceducation that can be tai-lored to meet your child'sindividual needs so as toprepare them to be tomor-row's leaders. They areproud to have graduateswho serve the larger com-munity in the fields ofmedicine, law, business, education, professionalsports, and communityservice.

These are some com-ments from some of theirparents: “I am a momwith one son. When Ilooked for an elementaryschool, I looked for smallclass size and a strongdedication to educationalexcellence. I found that St.Bernard was that school, truly a gem on the westside of Cincinnati thatpeople need to knowabout.”

“My son loves sportsand works hard, but he isnot the best player on theteam. At St. BernardSchool, every child hasthe opportunity to be a

member of the team. Forkids, sports are anotherway to connect and besocially successful.” St.Bernard Athletics pro-gram has one major dif-ference over other schoolsand that is that everychild who wants to playsports gets to be on theteam.

“When I first consid-ered sending my child toSt. Bernard school, I heardit was small, safe, andCatholic. I thought I knewwhat those three wordsmeant, but now I really

understand the meaningof those words:

The classroom size issmall enough for a richlearning experience. theatmosphere is safe in thesense that there is close-ness, almost like the close-ness of a family where theolder children look out forthe younger children.teachers and studentsalike come to know eachother across grade levelsand st. bernard school issolidly catholic in that itprovides a Christ centerededucation in agreement

with the teachings of theCatholic Church.”

St. Bernard’s Catholicidentity is visible in theirclassrooms, halls, servicework and our athleticactivities. Along with theparents, the primary edu-cators of the faith, theywork together to providean environment that fos-ters a love of God and theCatholic Faith. The staffstarts each school daytogether in prayer beforethe students arrive. Thestudents start and endeach day with prayer.

Your child gets theCatholic Education theydeserve. It is solid anduses both the Catechismand Bible as classroomresources.

At St. Bernard Schooleveryone works togetherso that everyone succeeds. This starts with the pastor, principal, teachers, stu-dents and includes everystaff member of theparish. Because of theirsmall size, they are able toprovide individualized

La Salle High School is proudto celebrate 50 years of excellencein education.

“We have seen La Salle growinto a premier academic and spir-itual institutional leader empha-sizing our pillar values of leader-ship, scholarship, faith, service, and community,” says PrincipalTom Luebbe. “For the upcomingschool year, we are launching ournew De La Salle Signum FideiInstitute (DLSFI) and a revisedcurriculum incorporating the lat-est tablet technology.”

Three years ago in the office ofcampus ministry, the Director ofCampus Ministry, the Director ofStudent Activities and WebCommunications Director had aninformal discussion about theirvision for the future. This groupof dynamic and committed facul-ty members grew to include theDirector of the Lasallian ScholarsInstitute and the Director of

Technology, Methodology andCurriculum. Their discussionevolved into a plan to change theface of La Salle High School byfocusing on the values that makeLa Salle unique: its dedication toforming leaders of faith, strong inmind, body and spirit; its dedica-tion to the call to serve.

DLSFI integrates the fiveLasallian core values of faith, scholarship, service, community, and leadership. Its mission: “TheLa Salle Servant Leader will havethe experience and confidence toethically lead in a 21st centuryenvironment, and be instilledwith a faith-guided passion toapply his gifts and talents to bet-ter his local and global communi-ties.”

DLSFI is composed of manyparts for one purpose – to chal-lenge students daily to use theirtalents as leaders. The DLSFI isunique in its approach to curricu-

lum by incorporating leadershipand faith development into theoverall curriculum working inconjunction with the new tablettechnology. As a part of SignmFidei, each student will become amember of a faith-sharing com-munity known as their ProjectTeam. Project teams will meetweekly throughout the year inthe Signum Fidei Seminar wherethey will create their ServiceInitiative. This Service Initiative, led by a senior, will build aware-ness of the needs in the school, the local, national and world-wide community; identify serviceprojects; raise funds; and buildprayer networks. This will serveas a major component of theSenior Capstone Project. All ofthese parts of the DLSFI will beseamlessly united by the newtablet/PC program and theupdated curriculum. The newtechnology is “not an end in itself

but lays the foundation for con-tinuous learning,” says DaveVolk, Director of Technology,Methodology and Curriculum.“The focus is on learning to usetechnology rather than learningabout technology.”

DLSFI and theStudent/Servant/ Leader modelwill become a prototype for otherLasallian schools throughout thecountry and the world.

La Salle celebrates the recentsuccesses of the Class of 2010which secured scholarship offerstotaling over $8.5 million. Despite its long andrich history, St. X is anything butcontent to rest on its laurels. Theschool boasts Smart-Cart technol-ogy in every classroom and state-of-the-art facilities in the sciences.St. X is forward thinking andamong the area’s leaders in edu-cational innovation. Beyond academics, St. Xavieris a place where students grow ina variety of other ways. One ofthe most important is as a manfor others.
