• Bowhunting is a sport in which prey is hunted by bow and arrow.

• Bowhunting requires patience, strategy, and skill.

• The origin of crossbows dates back to around 5 B.C.

• Crossbows were invented in China as a weapon of war.

• Crossbows are more accurate than standard bows due to the speed

of the arrow and the fact that most come with a scope.

• Generally a crossbow can be highly effective out to 50 yards.

• Today, there are many options for crossbows.

• The right type depends upon your personal preference and needs.

Compound Crossbow

• Good for hunting or target shooting

• Consists of a string and cables

• Speed is generated from a cam system

• Requires a bow press to maintain

Recurve Crossbow

• Good for hunting or target shooting

• Range in size from 125 to 200 pounds

• Easier to maintain

• Includes only one string, no cables to maintain

• Crossbow makers continue to aim for faster speeds (typically measured

by Feet Per Second or FPS).

• Crossbows become faster when the draw weight is increased.

• Crossbows are usually 150 to 200 lb. in draw weight, shooting between

200 and 400 FPS.

• What’s the ideal speed? It depends upon the size of what you’re hunting

and the weight of your arrow.

o For big game hunting, 300FPS with a hunting-weight arrow should be

sufficient.

• When comparing crossbow speeds, check for the weight of the

arrows used in testing.

• A common arrow weight can help you ensure you’re comparing

“apples to apples.”
