November 2019 as I started writing our December Newsletter. Unapologetically Australian, he moved to the UK in 1961, mainly living in Cambridge and London. He embraced the ‘Swinging Sixties’ of London but, at the same time, opened our British eyes to Australian life beyond the normal vision. As he so eloquently said “ Actua!y, like the vast majority of Australians, I had been born and raised in a city, but in the British imagination at that time the whole of Australia was sti! in the outback, which was somehow equipped with a beach. Later on, this outback beach acquired an Opera House and a row of brick bungalows, one of them occupied by Kylie Minogue.” The World is a sadder place with his departure. “Common sense and a sense of humour are the same thing, moving at dierent speeds. A sense of humour is just common sense dancing”. Clive James : 1939-2019. Movie Group Review:

Last Christmas

I arrived at Glenbrook Cinema with my cynical soul on full display, ready to pooh, pooh this movie, already prejudged, just from the trailer. How wrong was I!Instead of the mawkishness I had expected, it was a delightful story with George Michael’s beautiful songs running through it. The humour was gentle at the start, just bringing a smile to my face, but by the time it arrived at the scene of the Christmas party auditions for the homeless shelter I had to remove my glasses to wipe away the tears of laughter, which was convenient as it disguised my tears of poignancy from a previous scene. I pride myself on being quite astute at guessing any twists in ‘who dunnits’, a lifetime of reading Stephen King books has honed this skill, but…..I swear that nobody in the cinema, including my self, saw the twist in “Last Christmas”. There was a pretty constant stream of racial harmony running through this movie and, if I have one minor criticism, it was of one scene on a bus that rather clumsily portrayed a racially motivated verbal attack, the scene was unnecessary. Otherwise 100% all round. I have not picked out one actor, as they were all first class, but especially Emma Thompson" Glen Davis

ANN AND ERNIE JOHNSON

On the 20th. December Ann and Ernie are moving from Glenmore Park to Port Macquarie. They are both Founder Members of Glenmore Park Probus Club, having joined in February 2005. They have always been very active members, going on many trips and outings with Ernie having organised Car Rallies for the club. Unfortunately, like too many of our members, Ann su!ers from Macular Degeneration, coupled with breaking her femur last year they feel it is time to take things easier and relax in their lovely retirement home on the shores of Queen’s Lake. They have promised the Committee that they will return for the 15th. Anniversary Lunch in January and the cake cutting ceremony at our February meeting. I am sure we all wish them ‘Bon Voyage’ on their new adventure and on a personal note, Ernie’s 8 will miss you dearly at our Friday night meat ra"e. Editor, Glen Davis
