  • Opening Acclamation Psalm 43:3, BCP 78   Ociant Send out your light and your truth, that they may lead me,

and bring me to your holy hill and to your dwelling.

Confession of Sin   Ociant Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

  • Ociant Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus  Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in  eternal life.

    All   Amen.

Opening Versicle   Ociant Lord, open our lips.   All And our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:   as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever.   Amen. Alleluia.

    Venite Psalm 95:1-7, BCP 82

All   Come, let us sing to the Lord;   let us shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation.  Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving   and raise a loud shout to him with psalms.  For the Lord is a great God,   and a great King above all gods.  In his hand are the caverns of the earth,   and the heights of the hills are his also.  The sea is his, for he made it,   and his hands have molded the dry land.   Come, let us bow down, and bend the knee,   and kneel before the Lord our Maker.  For he is our God,  and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand.   Oh, that today you would hearken to his voice!

  • Psalm 105 Psalm 105:1–6, 23–26, 45c, BCP 738   Lector Let us read from Psalm 105 responsively by whole verse.

Give thanks to the LORD and call upon his Name;   make known his deeds among the peoples.

Sing to him, sing praises to him,   and speak of all his marvelous works.

Glory in his holy Name;   let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice.

Search for the LORD and his strength;   continually seek his face.

Remember the marvels he has done,   his wonders and the judgments of his mouth,

O ospring of Abraham his servant,   O children of Jacob his chosen.

     Israel came into Egypt,

    and Jacob became a sojourner in the land of Ham.  The LORD made his people exceedingly fruitf ul;

he made them stronger than their enemies;  Whose heart he turned, so that they hated his people,

and dealt unjustly with his servants.  He sent Moses his servant,

and Aaron whom he had chosen.

All   Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:   as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

  • The First Reading Exodus 3:1-15, NRSV, read by Jen Kwong    Lector A Reading from the Book of Exodus.   Moses was keeping the ock of his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian; he led his ock beyond  the wilderness, and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. There the angel of the LORD appeared to  him in a ame of re out of a bush; he looked, and the bush was blazing, yet it was not consumed.  Then Moses said, “I must turn aside and look at this great sight, and see why the bush is not burned  up.” When the LORD saw that he had turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, “Moses,  Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” Then he said, “Come no closer! Remove the sandals from your feet,  for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” He said further, “I am the God of your father,  the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for he was  afraid to look at God.   Then the LORD said, “I have observed the misery of my people who are in Egypt; I have heard their  cry on account of their taskmasters. Indeed, I know their suerings, and I have come down to deliver  them from the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land to a good and broad land, a land  owing with milk and honey, to the country of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the  Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. The cry of the Israelites has now come to me; I have also seen  how the Egyptians oppress them. So come, I will send you to Pharaoh to bring my people, the  Israelites, out of Egypt.” But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh, and bring the  Israelites out of Egypt?” He said, “I will be with you; and this shall be the sign for you that it is I who  sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall worship God on this mountain.”   But Moses said to God, “If I come to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your ancestors has  sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?” God said to Moses, “I  AM WHO I AM.” He said further, “Thus you shall say to the Israelites, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ”  God also said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the Israelites, ‘The LORD, the God of your ancestors,  the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you’:

This is my name forever,  and this my title for all generations.”

Lector The Word of the Lord.  People Thanks be to God.

  • Canticle 10 | The Second Song of Isaiah   Isaiah 55:6-11, BCP 86   Lector Seek the Lord while he wills to be found;

call upon him when he draws near.  Let the wicked forsake their ways   and the evil ones their thoughts;  And let them turn to the Lord, and he will have compassion,   and to our God, for he will richly pardon.  For my thoughts are not your thoughts,   nor your ways my ways, says the Lord.  For as the heavens are higher than the earth,   so are my ways higher than your ways,   and my thoughts your thoughts.  For as rain and snow fall from the heavens   and return not again, but water the earth,  Bringing forth life and giving growth,   seed for sowing and bread for eating,  So is my word that goes forth from my mouth;   it will not return to me empty;  But it will accomplish that which I have purposed,   and prosper in that for which I sent it.

All Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:

as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

The Second Reading   Romans 12:9–21, NRSV, read by Kathryn Narramore   Lector A Reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans.   Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with mutual aection;  outdo one another in showing honor. Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in  hope, be patient in suering, persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend  hospitality to strangers.

    6

  • Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with  those who weep. Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly;  do not claim to be wiser than you are. Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is  noble in the sight of all. If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved,  never avenge yourselves, but leave room for the wrath of God; for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I  will repay, says the Lord.” No, “if your enemies are hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them  something to drink; for by doing this you will heap burning coals on their heads.” Do not be overcome  by evil, but overcome evil with good.   Lector The Word of the Lord.  People Thanks be to God.

Canticle | The Song of the Redeemed   Revelation 15:3-4, BCP 94   Lector O ruler of the universe, Lord God,

Great deeds are they that you have done,    surpassing human understanding.  Your ways are ways of righteousness and truth,    O King of all the ages.  Who can fail to do you homage, Lord,   and sing the praises of your Name?    for you only are the holy One.  All nations will draw near and fall down before you,    because your just and holy works have been revealed.

All Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:

as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

  • The Holy Gospel Matthew 16:21–28 , NRSV   Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew.  People Glory to you, Lord Christ.   Deacon Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and undergo great

suering at the hands of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on  the third day be raised. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying,  “God forbid it, Lord! This must never happen to you.” But he turned and said to  Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; for you are setting your  mind not on divine things but on human things.”

Then Jesus told his disciples, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny  themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life  will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will nd it. For what will it prot  them if they gain the whole world but forfeit their life? Or what will they give in return  for their life?

“For the Son of Man is to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he  will repay everyone for what has been done. Truly I tell you, there are some standing  here who will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”

The Gospel of the Lord.  People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The Sermon | “Jesus the Self-Emptying Messiah” The Rev. Jimmy Lawrence   The Apostles' Creed   All I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth;  I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.

He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit  and born of the Virgin Mary.

    9

  • He suered under Pontius Pilate,  was crucied, died, and was buried.

He descended to the dead.  On the third day he rose again.  He ascended into heaven,

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.  He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,  the holy catholic Church,  the communion of saints,  the forgiveness of sins  the resurrection of the body,  and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer   Ociant The Lord be with you.   All And also with you.   Ociant Let us pray.

Our Father, who art in heaven,

on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread.  And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those  who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,  but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,  and the power, and the glory,  for ever and ever. Amen.

The meals  ministry, led by Kerry Salvatierra , is one way  we celebrate, mourn and simply walk with one  another. This week we welcome Kelly and Todd  Brewer’s new baby to their family. Please use the  link below to sign up to send a meal to the  Brewers.  https://www.TakeThemAMeal.com/ACRX7497   Collecting Clothing Donations for Pathways  We are collecting Men's and Women's pants (all  sizes) and comfortable walking shoes for our  shower program. If you have items to donate,  drop them o at the front desk on Tuesdays and  Thursdays 8am-2pm or MWF 12-3pm . Please  only bring the requested items!   Community Ministries Update  In the past few weeks, local papers such as the  West Side Rag and the New York Post have  written extensively about the four new shelters  that have taken residence in vacant hotels on the  Upper West Side, just around the corner from All  Angels' Church. While varying viewpoints exist,  and are represented within our All Angels  community, we continue to be a church  committed to loving our neighbors experiencing  homelessness as "one community in Christ", and  we are prayerfully considering how we ought to  respond to the needs of the community. As an  immediate response, we invited NYC Relief to  the Pathways Drop-in program on Thursday,  August 18th from 11am-2pm to do outreach.  This was a pilot outreach to connect new shelter

residents to the community, seek peace among  our neighbors, and help us see where the greatest  need is. We served 70 meals and passed out 75  toiletry kits outside the church that day, on top  of the regular services oered indoors. Read more  about the collaboration in the West Side Rag  article here:  https://www.westsiderag.com/2020/08/21/relief -bus-parked-at-church-helps-homeless-people-wit h-meals-and-supplies   Worship in the Anglican Tradition  As we experience a new liturgy on Sunday  mornings, and as we discern how God is calling  us to worship this Fall, we want all that we do  to be grounded in the Anglican tradition.  Thankfully, the Anglican tradition is broad, and  holds space for a variety of dierent expressions  of faith. This week we will dive into the  “Anglo-Catholic” stream, and our speaker will  be The Rev. Dr. Matthew Olver , Professor of  Liturgics and Pastoral Theology at Nashotah  House Theological Seminary. The teaching is  Wednesday, 9/2 , and begins at 6pm (till 7pm)  and promises to not disappoint. Email  [email protected] to secure a spot on  Zoom.    Psalm 91 Relief Fund  For those needing nancial relief in the midst of  this pandemic, our Psalm 91 relief fund is  available. We encourage you to reach out. These  funds are here to help. You can apply for  assistance by emailing it to  [email protected]
