SIZING GUIDE
AUSTRALIAN STANDARDS INFORMATION
AS 1319-1994 states requirements for design and application of
safety signs intended for the workplace, providing criteria
for:
• Regulation and control of safety related behaviour• Hazard
warning • Emergency information, including fire protection
details
Safety Signs and Australian Standards
Sign Classification and Use1. Danger SignsWarn of a specific
hazard, hazardous conditions or environment that is likely to be
life threatening.
2. Warning SignsNotify of a particular hazard, hazardous
conditions or environment that is NOT likely to be life
threatening.
3. Mandatory SignsIndicate that an instruction MUST be carried
out.
4. Prohibition SignsAre an alert that an activity is not
permitted.
5. Emergency Information SignsIdentify the location of, or
directions to, emergency related facilities such as safety
equipment, exits or first aid facilities.
6. Fire SignsAdvise of the location of fire alarms and
fire-fighting facilities.
Recommended minimum sizes for signs are as follows: Signs in a
factory or yard environment, where lighting is good and signs are
mounted in reasonably prominent positions.
Symbolic Sign (Pictogram) size 15mm per metre of viewing
distance.
Signs in poor lighting conditions, not likely to fall readily
into the observers line of sight, or are otherwise likely to be
placed in less conspicuous positions should have signs increased by
50% or more in size.
Lettering Size Upper Case - 5mm per metre of viewing distance.
Lower Case - 4mm per metre of viewing distance.
