May 7th & 8th, 2016

Welcome!

We’ve been waiting for you! Our mission at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church is to proclaim Christ’s Abundant Love. We are called to reach out to persons of all ages and life situations with Christ’s own hospitality and acceptance, to invite you to be our companion on the spiritual journey as we discover together the ways that Christ is offering hope, healing, and a renewed sense of meaning for our lives.

If you are not a member, we would love to talk to you about our ministry. We invite you to talk to one of our pastors or stop at the Welcome Center near the church entrance.

May your worship experience here at St. Mark’s draw you closer to Christ and His Abundant Love!

Today’s WORSHIP FOCUS

This week brings us almost to the end of the Easter cycle, and concludes the series of lectionary readings from Acts and Revelation. Following Pentecost, and Trinity Sunday on the first Sunday after Pentecost, we start a new series of readings from 1 & 2 Kings and Paul's Letter to the Galatians. At that time we shall also resume the series of Gospel readings from Luke.

The Second Lesson from Acts 16:16-34 is the story of Paul and Silas and their imprisonment. It is the story of “Jailhouse Rock” and if you know anything about rock n’ roll music you know a singer who had a hit song decades ago that you can still hear once in a while. But there is a bigger story in the Second Lesson – it is about being a witness and how that is done.

On this weekend we also celebrate the gift of Christian parents – and especially recognizing those women in our life, be they mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters, or dear friends who have nurtured, taught, encouraged and supported us and been a witness of God’s love to us.

Come and rejoice in our worship – not just in a “Jailhouse Rock” but also in the gifts of Word and Sacrament and the gifts that women of faith have given to us!

Next Week’s WORSHIP FOCUS

Pentecost is upon us! This festival celebrates the stirring and sustaining presence of God’s Spirit within the church. The message is that the Christian community, and all of creation itself, relies for life on the sending of God’s Spirit. Pentecost reminds us of God’s extraordinary and powerful freedom. …every nation… all were filled…and everyone who calls on the name…. This freedom breaks boundaries.

The Spirit gives the church its mission and the power to undertake it.

So, we ask …”What mission is the Spirit giving to us and to St. Mark’s?”

The color for the day is RED! Wear it to say, “I’m listening!”
