Hardware InstallationInstalling the MSM765zl

Installing the MSM765zl

To install the MSM765zl into a switch, the switch can be powered on or off. The following procedure assumes the switch is powered on.

Installation Procedure

1. Use a Torx T-10 or flat-bladed screwdriver to unscrew the screws in the cover plate over the slot where the MSM765zl is to be installed. Remove the cover, and store the cover plate for possible future use.

2. Hold the MSM765zl by its bulkhead—taking care not to touch the metal connectors or components on the board.

3. Open the extractor handles.

Installation Precautions

■ Static electricity can severely damage the electronic components on the MSM765zl. When handling and installing the MSM765zl, follow these procedures to avoid damage from static electricity:

• Handle the MSM765zl by its bulkhead or edges and avoid touching the components and the circuitry on the board.

• When installing the MSM765zl, equalize any static charge difference between your body and the switch by wearing a grounding wrist strap and attaching it to the switch’s metal body, or by frequently touching the switch’s metal body.

■ The MSM765zl has “low-force”, high-performance connectors. High insertion forces are not necessary to install the MSM765zl, and should not be used.

■ Ensure the MSM765zl is fully inserted. Press the MSM765zl into the slot until the bulkhead on the MSM765zl contacts or is very close to contacting the front face of the switch chassis.

■ Once the MSM765zl is fully inserted, screw in the two retaining screws to secure the MSM765zl in place.

■ For safe operation, proper switch cooling, and reduction of electromag-netic emissions, ensure that a slot cover is installed on any unused MSM765zl slot. For safety, no more than one slot should be uncovered at a time when the switch is powered on.

■ Respect the temperature specifications for the MSM765zl.

Hardware InstallationInstalling the MSM765zl

Verifying the MSM765zl is Installed Correctly

When the MSM765zl is installed properly, it undergoes a self test that takes a few seconds. This happens both when the switch is powered on after installing the MSM765zl, and when the MSM765zl is installed while the switch already has power. The LEDs help determine if the MSM765zl has passed the self test, as described in the following table.

Error Conditions

Error conditions indicated by the MSM765zl LEDs are described in “Front Panel Port and LEDs” on page C-1.

N o t e Allow sufficient time for the MSM765zl to start up, or you will receive an error message.

About MSM765zl Ports

The MSM765zl features two ports, Internet and LAN. These ports do not have RJ-45 Ethernet jacks. Instead, these ports connect through the switch backplane and are mapped to specific RJ-45 jacks on an Ethernet module by VLAN configuration in the switch. The switch references the Internet and LAN ports according to the switch slot in which the MSM765zl is installed. For example, if the MSM765zl is installed in slot C, the first port (C1) corresponds to the Internet port, and the second port (C2) corresponds to the LAN port.

Define and Assign VLANs

1. At the switch CLI prompt, enter:

menu

2. Press Enter. Select Switch Configuration.

3. From the Switch Configuration menu, select VLAN Menu:

Getting StartedConfigure the Controller

1. Select VLAN Names.

2. Add two VLANs, one for the Internet port and another for the LAN port. For example VLAN ID 10 with name MSM765_Int for the Internet port and VLAN ID 20 with name MSM765_LAN for the LAN port:

3. Select Back to return to the VLAN Menu.

4. Select VLAN Port Assignment.

N o t e In addition to DEFAULT_VLAN, columns are now present for the two VLAN names (MSM765_Int and MSM765_LAN) you defined above. In our example, the MSM765zl Internet port will be assigned to Ethernet port A1 and the MSM765zl LAN port will be assigned to Ethernet port A2.

Getting StartedConfigure the Controller

Initial MSM765zl Configuration

Determine Switch Index of the MSM765zl

The starting point for this procedure is the switch CLI prompt that looks like this:

ProCurve Switch 5406zl#

Before you can launch the MSM765zl CLI you must first determine the switch-assigned index of the MSM765zl. Each product type that is based on the Services zl Module (J9154A) like the MSM765zl, gets an index of at least 2 assigned to it by the switch at installation time.

For example, If two MSM765zl modules are installed in a switch with no other Services zl Module-based products already installed, both MSM765zl blades will be assigned an index of 2 by the switch. Later, when a Services zl Module-based blade with a different product is installed in the same switch, it will be assigned an index of 3. Installation sequence per product type determines the index value.

1. To determine the index of your MSM765zl, enter the following at the switch CLI prompt (config should be skipped if you are already in the switch CLI config context):

config services

The Services zl Module products and their assigned indexes are listed like this:

In this example, there is only one type of Services zl Module installed, the MSM765zl. The modules are installed in slots A, B, and C. All three MSM765zl modules have been assigned an index of 2. Take note of the index value.

N o t e Index 1 is reserved for the Service OS CLI for all Services zl Module-based products.

2. Exit the switch CLI config context by typing Control-z. The switch CLI prompt changes so that it now looks like this:

ProCurve Switch 5406zl#

To set the MSM765zl LAN port IP address:

1. Select the MSM765zl of interest, specifying the slot and index determined earlier.

services <slot-id> <index>

2. Enable the chosen MSM765zl CLI and select its config context:

enableconfig

3. Select the MSM765zl LAN port interface:

interface ip lan

4. Assign it an IP address of 192.168.1.1 and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.

ip address 192.168.1.1/24

The following sample screen shows the commands from the above 4-step procedure, using slot C with an index of 2:

Configure the MSM765zl Internet Port

The procedures in this section are performed with the MSM765zl management tool and a web browser on your computer.

This is an initial configuration procedure for the MSM765zl, enabling you to establish a wired connection through the MSM765zl to the Internet. The MSM765zl is managed via its Web-based management tool using at least Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0 or Mozilla Firefox 2.0.

N o t e Some prompts only appear when the MSM765zl is in its factory-default state.

1. Disconnect any cable from your computer LAN port, and disable any wireless connection.

2. Configure the computer to use a static IP address in the range 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.254. If necessary, enter the subnet mask. For example, in MS Windows, the subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 is entered automatically when you tab through the field. Set the default gateway to 192.168.1.1, and DNS server to 192.168.1.1.

For example, in Windows XP, select Control Panel > Network

Connections > Local Area Connection > Properties > Internet

Protocol (TCP/IP) > Properties.

3. Connect your computer to the Ethernet port (A2) you assigned to the MSM765zl LAN port.

4. Open a command prompt and confirm that the MSM765zl LAN port can now be pinged at the address to which it was set:

ping 192.168.1.1

5. In a web browser, launch the management tool at the LAN port address https://192.168.1.1.

6. You may be prompted to accept a security certificate. To continue, proceed as follows: At the security certificate prompt, in Microsoft Internet Explorer 7, select Continue to this website; in Firefox 2, select Accept this certificate temporarily for this session and OK.

For information on how you can replace the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate that ships with the MSM765zl with one of your own, see Managing certificates in the MSM7xx Controller Management and

Configuration Guide.

7. On the Login page, enter admin for Username and Password and then select Login.

8. If presented with a License Agreement page, read the agreement and select Accept License Agreement. This will not appear if you already accepted the agreement on the CLI.

9. If presented with a registration page, register now, or if desired, register later by selecting Service Controller >> Maintenance > Registration.

10. If presented with a Country prompt, choose the country in which this product will be used and select Save.

C a u t i o n The country in which the MSM765zl is operating must be accurately set.

Hardware ComponentsReplacing the Disk Drive

C a u t i o n A 5-second delay is mandatory between removing an MSM765zl, and either re-installing it, or replacing it with another.

To replace one MSM765zl with another, or to remove a MSM765zl without replacing it, use the following procedure:

1. Unscrew the retaining screws enough to disconnect them from the threaded holes in the switch.

2. Using the extractor handles pull the MSM765zl out from the slot.

3. Do one of the following:

• If installing another module of the same type, go to “Installation Procedure” on page 1-2 and begin with step 2. A switch reset is not required. The current configuration in that slot will apply to the new module.

• If another MSM765zl will not be installed in the slot (that is, the slot will be left empty), re-install the cover plate over the slot opening.

C a u t i o n For proper cooling and reduction of electromagnetic emissions, ensure that a slot cover is installed on any unused slot.

Replacing the Disk Drive

The following procedure describes replacing the Disk Drive in the MSM765zl. The MSM765zl may be removed while the switch is powered on. The numbers in Figure 8 on page C-6 correspond to the first four step numbers below.

1. Using either a flat-bladed or Torx T-10 screwdriver loosen the retaining screws securing the MSM765zl.

2. Using the extractor handles, pull the MSM765zl out from the slot and turn it over.

3. Using a Cross Recess Type 1 No.1 (Philips tip) screwdriver remove the four retaining screws holding the disk drive.

4. Slide the disk drive part way back to disconnect it.

5. Position the disk drive in the middle of the disk drive slot.

6. Using either side of the disk drive bracket, lift the disk drive out.

7. Install the new disk drive and slide it forward to engage the connector.

8. Re-install the four retaining screws.
