COMMUNITY GARDEN UPDATE BUSY BEE Next Busy Bee is scheduled for Saturday 12th November 2016 from 8.30AM Looking to plant some summer vegetables, fill the large pot for the lemon tree and some general weeding and tidy up. Also a good time to drop in and have a chat about more structures for around the fire drum and in the nature play area. WATERING ROSTER We have a new watering roster for this summer as above. Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to help with this. If you are unable to do your day please either swap with someone else on the roster or let Tory know and I will make arrangements. If anyone else in the community happens to be dropping by on a non-watering day please feel free to do some watering if you wish. FRESH GREENS There are lots of lettuces down at the garden and some parsley, broad beans, silver beet, coriander, mint, fennel and onions for the picking.
TIDY TOWN It was great to see so many residents taking advantage of the verge collection day in early October 2016. Due to the positive feedback received it is envisaged that we will make this a regular event twice yearly. With the warmer weather and the long dry grasses around the Shire has been doing some slashing around town and many residents have tidied up their yards. There is still however a number of properties with long grasses which is both a fire hazard and a haven for snakes. Remember there is still the skip bin available to residents on a rotational basis for a 2 week period which can be used to remove green waste if you are thinking of tidying up your yard. Bookings for the skip bin are to be made to Ayu at the Shire Office on 9889 1006 or [email protected] and a fee payable of $10. Keeping our town neat and tidy has lots of positive flow on effects for our community. Here are just a few comments we have received recently from interstate and overseas tourists visiting our Caravan Park. ‘Outstanding facilities, thank you Kondinin - thanks for a great stay - facilities excellent - 5 star!‘ ‘Best disabled facilities anywhere’ ‘Best ever for the price well done - will be back again’
INTEREST IN RE-STARTING A SWIMMING CLUB
With our wonderful new Kondinin Pool opening again on Wednesday 2nd November 2016 and early morning lap swimming starting on the 16th November 2016 we were also wondering if people would be interested in re-starting up a swimming club on Sunday mornings from 10am to 11am. This would be open to all ages. Drills and sets can be tailored to ages and abilities and swimmers can be timed. If anyone might be interested in this, either as a swimmer or a volunteer please contact Tory at the Shire on 9889 1006 or [email protected]

The Family Secret "From one of Australia's favourite storytellers comes a heart-warming story spanning three generations about when to fight and when to surrender and how new love can heal old wounds. Kim Richards is a creative woman of the land, a rural ambassa-dor who's renowned for her contribution to her community. But deep down, she's lonely. She's already watched the man she loves falls for someone else, and her dream of starting her own family feels like it's slipping through her fingers. Enter Charlie McNamara, an older man who's arrived in Lake Grace on busi-ness. Sparks fly between Kim and Charlie, but he seems to have a hidden agenda and a past life he's trying to hide. They're both drawn to local hermit Harry, a Vietnam veteran who's haunted by memories from the war. What ties these lost souls together? Can they solve a long-held family mystery and heal fractures of the heart? Fiona Palmer has well and truly earned her place as a leading writer of one of Australia's much loved gen-res.' Countryman"
Sapphire Falls
“While mystery surrounds the accidental shooting of her hus-band, Fiona Forrest struggles to preserve the family farm in a suspenseful, pacy and action packed novel from the author of
Crimson Dawn and Indigo Storm.
Fiona Forrest is devastated when her husband Charlie commits suicide after the accidental shooting of his mate Eddie. Though Fiona decides to keep farming their successful property, ru-mours that she intends to sell keep circulating. When Detective Dave Burrows arrives to sign off on the investigation into Ed-die’s death, his suspicions are aroused by some strange anom-alies at the scene. As Dave becomes increasingly convinced that something sinister is going on, Fiona finds herself dealing
with a series of disasters on the farm “

SHIRE GRANTS PROGRAM 2016—2017
It has been great to see community and sporting groups implementing their grant money through the Shire’s 2016—2017 Grants Program, including the new landscaping at West Court, the new crosses at the pioneer cemetery, Sabrina Hahn’s visit to Hyden and Kondinin, attendance at the conference of the Isolated Children and Parents Association of WA and building material for the Hyden Men’s Shed. Community Groups and Sporting Organisations are reimbursed with agreed grant amounts following copy of invoice and confirmation of payment being submitted to the Shire. This is a great source of funding for small projects or events. Keep in mind applications for the 2017 - 2018 round which will be open in March 2017.
