Introduction
Tinplate is a thin steel sheet coated by tin. It has a beautiful metallic luster as well as
excellent properties in corrosion resistance, solderability, and weldability. Tinplate is used
for making all types of containers such as food cans, beverage cans, and artistic cans etc. Its
applications are extended for making electrical machinery parts and many other products.
Our tinplate products are manufactured under the ISO9001-based integral quality
management system. Every step from materials sourcing to final finishing processes is
designed to focus on product quality. OS STEEL places utmost emphasis on the product
quality and competitive pricings in order to meet customer requirements. OS STEEL seeks
your continued patronage.
Features and Coating Structure
Characterised by its shiny and beautiful metallic luster. Tinplate
products with various types of surface roughness are produced by
selecting the surface finish of the substrate steel sheet.
Appearance
It has superior painting adhesion properties. Printing is easily and
beautifully finished using various lacquers and inks.
Paintability &
Printability
Through the selection of the correct temper grade, appropriate
formability is obtained for various applications as well as the
required strength after forming.
Formability &
Strength
Excellent corrosion resistance after painting. By selecting the proper
coating weight, the correct resistances against rust, acid, alkali are
obtained.
Corrosion
Resistance
Widely used for making various types of cans by soldering or
welding.

Code Characteristics
MR It contains few residual minor constituents which provides good
corrosion resistance.
L It contains higher concentrations of residual minor constituents
such as Cu, Ni, Cr, Mo, for improved corrosion resistance
R
It is aluminium steel which is suitable for application uses which
bear deep drawing or other working that is liable to produce
Lude’s line.

Manufacturing Process of Tinplate
Electro Cleaning & Pickling
Oil traces on the steel sheet are removed through the physical
force of gas produced by electrolysis of water and the chemical
reaction of caustic soda. Any rust is removed through pickling.
Electro Tin Plating
The vertical cells in operations will be determined by the
coating weight. Equal plating and differential plating are
possible.
Reflow
Electro tin plated coil is heated up to the melting point of tin
and then cooled down by quenching, to give luster to the
product.
Chromate Treatment
Chromate will be treated by electrolytic or non-electrolytic
method, with the plating range from 1~15§·/m².
Oiling
An electrostatic oiler, which uses electromagnetic force to oil
the plates. The range of oiling is 1~20§·/m².

Specification and Sizes
Tinplate can be produced according to standards of JIS G 3303, GB2520-88, and DIN
EN10203-91. This standard specifies two types of cold-rolled tin plates, single-rolled plates
and double-rolled plates. Single cold-rolled tinplates are made of carbon steel with nominal
thickness of 0.15mm to 0.60mm.

3. Surface Finishes
Finish Surface
Roughness Features & Applications
Bright 0.25 Bright finish for general use.
Stone 0.40 Surface finish with stone marks which make printing
and can-making scratches less conspicuous.
Super Stone 0.60 Surface finish with heavy stone marks.
Matte 1.00 Dull finish mainly used for making crowns and DI
cans (unmelted finish for tinplate).
Silver (Satin) ----- Rough dull finish mainly used for making artistic
cans (tinplate only, melted finish).
Temper Classifications of Tinplate
The temper designation gives a guide to the hardness (and stiffness) of tinplate products.
For single reduced products, the softer tempers are normally produced from Batch
Annealed (BA) feed, while the harder tempers are offered only from Continuous Annealed
(CA) feed.
Continuous Annealed (CA) products normally have more consistent mechanical properties
throughout the length of coil than Batch Annealed (BA), due to the nature of the process
involved.
T1 BA: Has excellent deep-drawing, anti-aging, mini-earing characteristics. Due to its superb ductility, It is used to make aerosol tops, food can tops, and portable gas containers.
T2 BA/T2.5 BA: It is used to make battery bodies, small tube bodies and lids, and D&I cans.
T3 BA: Has a fine finish and excellent workability. Proper stiffness to prevent buckling. It is used to make bodies and lids of general cans by light drawing.
T4 CA: Has fine finish and excellent strength, perfect characteristics for making cans for carbonated beverages.
T5 CA: Has outstanding cold rolling strength and is used as a substitute for T4 to lower the gauge
