SAFEST JUNCTIONS FOR
COMMUNICATIONS NETWORKS
70% of all road accidents happen atjunctions or are due to poor roads. Inthe field of telecommunications R&Mbuilds the safest junctions, reliablypreventing accidents and bottlenecksituations that increasing traffic densi-ty and growing speed can cause. In ge-neric communications cabling voiceand data have already merged togeth-er – the next developments will con-cern video, security and automation.
Due to the ever-increasing amount ofdata, the risk of – extremely costly –network failures is also increasing. Asmuch as two thirds of network failurestoday trace back to bad cabling solu-tions. The end users' demand for high-er quality standards is very under-standable. The uncompromising R&Mquality philosophy is clearly hitting thenail on the head!
FLEXIBLE FAMILY ENTERPRISE
Very conducive to these ambitions isthe unlimited flexibility of our medium-sized family enterprise, especiallycombined with the potential of a suc-cessful global player. A good twothirds of our net sales are generatedby export sales, compared to "only"45% in 1995. Our philosophy, "Wedon't do anything that others can dobetter." best summarises our uncom-promising commitment to quality andstringent R&M quality standards – andexplains why we play in the Cham-pions League and are positioned at thevery top of the world in our core busi-ness.
Customer focus is not just a buzzwordfor us, but an established fact – allaround the globe. That is why we have8 subsidiaries, 6 representative offi-ces, and more than 60 distributors andpartners worldwide.
A decision with a future
PACEMAKER OF THE COMMUNICATIONS TRADE
A perfect communications system must be modular and flexible in
design in order to meet future requirements. Just as important are
network availability, investment protection and ease of installation
and maintenance. The R&M cabling system ensures that the vision
of unlimited communication becomes reality for everyone.

Our leading position is firmly rooted innearly 40 years of experience, custo-mer-oriented solutions in close coop-eration with strategic partners, andlast but not least in our substantialknow-how in the field of connectinghardware of electrical and optical con-ductors. That is why our solutions setstandards for modularity and quality,as well as ease of installation andmaintenance.
THE FOUR BUSINESS FIELDS
In the field of enterprise cabling (struc-tured cabling systems) our R&Mfree-net cabling system embraces all thecabling in buildings and offices for da-ta and voice transmission, control sys-tems and data/power integration. It isthe biggest business field, and R&M iscontinuously expanding its establishedtechnological leadership, reinforcingthe resulting competitive advantage inthe area of shielded and unshieldedC5e and C6 RJ45 generic cabling andcomponents.
In the field of carrier cabling (telecomcarriers) R&M supplies cabling for theaccess sector as well as MAN andWAN applications. R&M's fiber opticconnectors have been set up withhigher transmission data – guarantee-ing top-grade, modular overall solu-tions for inside and outside plant appli-cations covering all requirements.
The field of industrial cabling embra-ces installations of systems in industri-al surroundings. In line with the slogan"Ethernet goes industry" R&M laun-ched the latest RJ45 solutions, whichare suited to the harshest environ-ments (dust, humidity). Plus, R&M of-fers the only system where jack andRJ45 plug can later be easily upgradedto an IP 54 protection index.
Residential cabling provides cablingsystems for private premises prepared
for the whole new multimedia age. This field holds enormous potential fordevelopment with new applicationssuch as faster Internet surfing, videoon demand or VPN home access tothe company's Ethernet.
R&M was the first enterprise to launcha modular outlet for residential applica-tions. Depending on what the userneeds, this most compact TV/radiojack (coax) accommodates phone ordata connections (RJ45) to snap on.

DIGITAL LIFESTYLE – MORE THAN
JUST COMPUTERS AND MEDIA
The use of different media in privatepremises is constantly increasing. Asmany as 40 to 60% of households inWestern Europe – with regional devia-tions – use a computer, and the per-centage of those with a broadbandInternet access among all networkedhouseholds will reach the 30% mark in2008.
The networking of private premisesgoes beyond telecommunications,Internet, broadcasting and entertain-ment. Soon fridges, cooking stoves, alarm systems and electronic buildingequipment will be online too. Thewashing machine with Internet accessand the interactive television alreadyexist.
This technological development is themanifestation of a life attitude, thedigital lifestyle. This means individuali-ty, convenience, and multi-optionality.Conclusively, this is what private cust-omers and users want:– more performance and bandwidth – discrete use of all media– free choice of access systems– permanent availability of all services– networking of a variety of equipment– flexible locations and applications– convenience, security, ease of use– elegance and design, and no cable

ETHERNET GOES INDUSTRY
Networking is steadily pressing on inthe industrial sector. In outdoor appli-cations today, LAN interfaces need tobe available even in aggressive, dusty,or oil-containing environments. Theobjective in industrial cabling is atransparent, generic network provid-ing redundant availability.
HIGHER DEMANDS
Cabling systems in industrial surround-ings are based on well-proven layer-1technologies from the LAN world thathave to meet higher and different de-mands. Next to the demand for ever-increasing bandwidth, it is protectionagainst corrosion, dust, humidity, andEMC, modularity, installation friendli-ness, and absolute top safety thathave priority in industrial cabling.
R&M supports planners, installers, and customers to fulfil these high de-mands, starting from the conceptionand product selection, up to lifetimeservice and support by supplying pro-fessional and competent solutions.
OUR RANGE OF SERVICES
R&M develops and supplies cablingsolutions in accordance with IEC50173 for industrial operational areas.Responding to the different needsthere are the transmission technolo-gies Cat. 5, Cat. 6, or fiber optics aswell as flexible, modular installationconcepts to choose from. Characteris-tic for R&M are unequalled productsand extensive expertise.
The increased use of high bit-rate transmission protocols magnifies
the demands set on the cabling system. This trend is heading towards
a transparent, continuous network. In addition to transmission
requirements the industrial sector holds many more demands, such
as installation friendliness, outdoor applications, and protection
against environmental influences.

010.0436
Cable routing and jumper management in freestanding H/V main distributionframes. The design of the VS Standard distribution frames simplifies cablewiring considerably. The following drawings show the correct cable routingon the MDF. Freestanding MDF can be accessed from raised floors or falseceilings. System and line cables are led through and positioned in the spacebetween the main columns as indicated in the drawing. No cables should beplaced in the lead-through windows. It has proved best to start from themiddle of the tension relief rung towards the two main columns. Thisprevents crossovers on both sides (system and line) and the spaces in thebottom end of the verticals or horizontals serve as reserve. In a second step, the cable led in the back mount frame is tension relieved once more, andconnected after a reserve loop of 8 to 10 cm.

Unlike the H/V set-up (matrix design), the main distribution frames inmedium-sized local exchanges are best fitted with VV distribution frames. They are the obvious choice for such exchanges that as a rule includefeatures such as line number assignment by software. Thanks to their space-saving channel design they are perfect when there is little space available. And thanks to the fact that system and installation cable are wired within thesame vertical, jumper work is facilitated substantially. Most of the jumperingstays within one vertical. The channels are spacious enough to accommodateall cables. The V/V distribution frames can be fitted with all VS Standardcomponents.
Features:– Take up little space, perfect for narrow rooms.– Simple support system for cable and module accommodations.– Ideal for direct mounting or raised floor installation.– Easily expanded.– Cable entry optional from raised floor or false ceiling.

When a different wiring concept is asked for, R&M vertical/verticaldistribution frames can also be fitted with channels for 8-pair modules andmixed with channels for 10-pair modules, with the same number of spaces. This means that all cables of a local exchange branch can becomprehensively connected, i.e. the today used outgoing binary cables anddecadic-signalling installation cables.

R&M's VS Standard withits double-contact system allows jumpering without interrupting the line. This is especially important for permanent data lines (modem). Procedure:a new jumper connection is inserted (connected in parallel) and the oldjumper connection is removed (using the wiring tool).

Universal contact systemThe standard contact element in VS Standard is used in the assembly ofconnection and disconnection modules, and is ideal for automatic production.A connection module is manufactured in one single operation, and it onlytakes one more for a disconnection module, ensuring low production costsand small price differences for connection and disconnection modules.VS Standard features a separate contact interface at the rear, allowingconvenient placing of slide-in prints, connections for ribbon cables, and otherparts. Custom-tailored special circuits such as diode uncoupling can be easilyintegrated, contacted in parallel or to the cableside connection.

Free access for jumpering and testingOur protection concept features rearside inserted primary protection so thatthe distributor's front stays clear for jumpering and testing work. At the sametime it ensures permanent personal protection and absolute user friendliness. The protection magazine can even stay plugged in when the cabling isextended – mix-ups are effectively prevented. The generous space providedfor cable guiding, strain relief, and the tying of reserve loops allows latercapacity expansions.

Primary Protection
Every electrical installation needs effective overvoltage protection. Operatorsnot only need to take all necessary protective measures for materialprotection, but are also for people's protection. Installation failures duringmanufacturing, communications or data storage processes are a big financialdrawback, not only for direct damages but also for costs due to operationaldowntime. These can be much higher than the costs for direct damages. For primary protection gas discharge tubes (GDT) are used. They are self-healing up to the nominal current load, i.e. when the voltage occurring isreduced, the GDT turns effective again. If a GDT is permanently overloaded it should be equipped with a fail-safe, orit could overheat causing fire or destruction of the installation.

Test Cords
Test and connecting cables support specialists in starting operations or infault rectifications. Connecting cords are particularly ideal for special circuitsor to establish temporary connections.R&M test cords have parallel contacting, allowing the connection of anymeasuring instrument, corresponding to the cable type. With disconnectionmodules test cords with contact interfaces on both sides are used, separating cable and jumper side and thus allowing the separate measuringof currents, voltages, etc.
Features:– Test plugs with contact interfaces on one or on both sides– Little contact resistance due to gold-plated contact areas– Various connection options for test equipment
