Open and compatible
Embedded control systems are based on PLCopen and CANopen®,
which make them easily scalable to meet requirements for both
small and large machines. Electronic control units (ECU) have
open I/O and communication interface, thus making it possible
to connect devices from other most common manufacturers to
optimize the whole machine environment, both technically and
ergonomically. In addition to CANopen® communication protocol,
SAE J1939 and ISOBUS are also available.

Epec EPC for vehicles and machines
Central unit
There are two alternative central units for the EPC: EPC-M18 and
EPC-C2D. EPC-M18 is equipped with Pentium M processor and
an EPC-C2D with Core 2 Duo processor. The EPC-C2D is one of the
most powerful vehicle computers in the market. Both units have
automatic integrated heating system and pioneering cooling
solution allowing a wide operating temperature area (-40°C to
+50°C). Also, endurance against vibration and impacts as well as
dirt and moisture have been taking into account.
The computer has two CAN 2.0B high speed interfaces, so it is
easy to integrate seamlessly with the embedded control system.
12V UPS –equipment is used to ensure the constant power supply
to guarantee the maximal usage of the machine. With the help of
external UPS-voltage it is possible to shut down the system in a
controlled manner and save all the information, also in situations
where the power supply voltage suddenly for some reason breaks off.
Separate CPU and display units make installing easy.
EPC is a modern and powerful vehicle computer designed
specially for demanding professional usage of mobile
machines and vehicles. Most advanced mobile working
machines are nowadays requiring more and more
intelligent and complex systems to run and operate

Display unit
Display unit is a robust display designed for a graphical user
interface of a vehicle computer. The materials used in this
dustproof display demonstrate that the equipment is designed for
extremely hard use. This is guaranteed by the robust aluminum
housing and a toughened glass TFT color LCD monitor.
An adjustable back light and good contrast makes usage very
comfortable also in very bright light conditions. The display unit
utilizes the newest communication interfaces and is very user
friendly thanks to it´s clear picture and sound features. Automatic
integrated heating guarantees a wide operating temperature
range. Main design features have been supported by high quality,
simplicity and robustness as well as Epec´s longterm experience
of control systems for challenging conditions.

Embedded Control Units are basic building blocks of
machine control systems. Each of the Control Units can
act as an independent control unit in smaller systems
or as a part in a total control system. They are compact
multifunction controllers, and have open I/O interfaces
which make it easy to connect sensors, actuators,
joysticks, and other devices from most common
manufacturers.
The design and unique shape of the control unit casing
works to protect the electronics inside against mechanical
wear. All control units are used in very hard environmental
conditions, thus it easily endures cold, heat, vibration,
moisture, and impacts. Control units can handle impacts
up to 100G, and are water and dust proof according to IP67.
This, and the functional design of the control unit casing,
also makes the installing easy as the control unit seldom
requires any extra protection.
The type of each input is determined by the PLCopen
the control unit. The control unit is PLCopen programmable
which makes the programming easy and convenient,
shortening development time for new systems. CoDeSys
programming tool provides an easy graphic environment
for developers to work with.
Epec uses gold plated, heavy duty, AMPSEAL connectors,
which are convenient to install into the machine, both
corresponding place. The connector type is specially
designed for wire harness use in volume production.
Two CAN bus interfaces increase the possibilities of
connecting other CAN devices with the control unit. They
also provide a communication solution for the control
system’s internal communication. With two CAN bus
interfaces, these control units are also capable to work as
a gateway between two different CAN buses. CANopen ®
communication protocol provides easy communication
with other CANopen® devices, and with SAE J1939
communication protocol all the communication with
modern diesel engines and transmissions etc. is also easy.
With optional ISOBUS CAN protocol, Epec Control Units
make an ideal solution for agricultural machines too.
Embedded Control Units
Epec 2024 Control UnitEpec 2024 Universal Control Unit is a compact multifunction
controller and it has an optimized number of both input and
output pins to be used for numerous roles in the control system.
The total number of I/O pins is 52, including digital inputs and
outputs, analog inputs, pulse inputs, proportional (PWM) outputs,
and current feedback inputs.

Epec 2023 Control UnitThe I/O interface in the 2023 Control Unit is optimized for
cabin use, thus it has inputs suitable to connect two, 3-axis
joysticks and several digital inputs to accommodate switches,
keys, etc. typical in a cabin environment. In addition, it has the
ability to connect keyboard matrices to it. In addition to the
vast number of inputs, the control unit has a number of digital
outputs and proportional (PWM) outputs for direct connections
to surrounding devices.

Epec 2020 Control UnitEpec 2020 Control Unit is a compact and rugged control unit
for embedded control systems. The I/O interface of the control
unit is specially optimized for hydraulic controlling as it has a
vast number of proportional (PWM) outputs to connect hydraulic
devices from most common manufacturers. To further increase
the accuracy of hydraulic control, the control unit has current

Shock cover for Epec control units
All Epec control units are designed to endure very hard
environmental conditions. When the control unit is mounted in
such a place where it might get impacts from dropping items,
someone stepping on it, or where it is exposed to possible water
spray, a special shock cover is used to protect connectors and wire
attachment points. The shock cover is mounted on the control
unit by using two special M6 bolts. The cover does not increase
on connectors. A special wire bracket is typically mounted under
the control unit. Bolts are tightened to attach the bracket and the
control unit to their places and the shock cover is mounted on top
of them for extra protection.
Epec 2038 Mini Control UnitEpec 2038 Mini Control Unit is the smallest control unit with 20
I/O pins for embedded control systems. The control unit is used
independently in smaller machines or with other control units
in larger systems. With the help of the 2038 Mini Control Unit it is
possible to even further deepen the distribution of intelligence
around the machine by locating the control unit next to connectable
sensors, actuators, and other devices spread around the machine.
There are two variations of this control unit. One variation of this
control unit has two CAN bus interfaces. The other variation has CAN
bus and RS232 serial interfaces.

Epec 2029 Mini Display
Epec 2029 Mini Display Unit is a 2.4” black and white graphical
LCD display unit with some I/O interface for direct control
purposes. The display unit can be used as a stand alone solution to
control smaller machines or as a user interface unit in a larger
control system. When mounted in the cabin, the display unit can
be installed either embedded in the dashboard panel or with an
adjustable mounting pedestal on e.g. the arm rest of the operator
chair.
The display unit is programmed by using CoDeSys in a PLCopen
environment.
The display unit has protection class of IP65 and high tolerance
against vibration and impacts, making it a suitable user interface
module for a typical mobile machine environment. Heavy
duty AMPSEAL connectors ensure the secure connections for
communications and I/O pins.
Mounting pedestal for Epec Mini Display Unit
The pedestal is mounted to its place by using one 3/8” screw in its base. The display is
attached by its underside to the mounting pedestal with an 1/4” screw.

Epec 2040 Color Display,release 3.0Simple interaction and usage of a machine are key elements in any
machine application. Freely programmable graphical user interface
provides an opportunity to maximize machine usability and
an ideal solution for heavy duty applications like mining machines,
excavators, forest machines, wheel loaders etc. Fully enclosed
aluminum housing provides water and dust proof operation
according to IP66. The temperature ranges from -20 ° C to +60 ° C.
The 2040 Color Display is equipped with two CAN bus interfaces, a

Epec 2021 Hub Unit is a compact and robust communication
and control unit for mobile machines. Small outside
makes installing easy.
Star topology in CAN bus is not often seen in embedded control
systems, but with the 2021 Hub Unit it is used to further
increase the safety and reliability of the embedded control
system. With the help of the hub unit, the system designing
and installing is easy as the hub distributes both CAN bus and
the power supply for the whole control system. This enables extra
safety features to be built into the system as the hub unit is
able to monitor the condition of the communication and power
supply wiring, as well as the power consumption of the whole
system. When the system power is distributed via the hub
unit, it is able to protect more sensitive devices connected to it
from e.g. overvoltage peaks.
The Hub Unit is PLCopen programmable and also has some
digital inputs and outputs which can be used to connect all the
surrounding devices with it.
Epec 2021 Hub Unit has two CAN bus connections spread
devices with it. CAN connections are CANopen® compatible and
user programmable, located securely in gold plated AMPSEAL
connectors. The hub unit can also be used to connect e.g.
SAE J1939 devices; engines, transmissions, etc. with the embedded
control system. In addition to the CAN bus interface, the hub unit
provides serial communication (RS485) interface for other devices.
With its versatile CAN connections, the 2021 Hub Unit
withdraws the need for separate CAN gateway units in the control
system, as the Hub Unit itself is able to act as a gateway
between different CAN buses.
The unique design of the 2021 Hub Unit, as with other Epec
control units gives them very good endurance against impacts
and mechanical wear.

Epec Simulator Box for system designers enables simulatingthe control system’s operations easily. It is possible to connect external actuators / sensors using the Simulator box’ banana connectors. You can also connect external CAN devices or concatenate multiple control units using the Simulator Box’
The control system to be simulated can be changed quickly: just print out new I/O labelstrips for the new system and load appropriate programs into control units.

3500 CAN Adapter Box
This, easy to use, connector cable is for system developers. It
provides connection for both CAN1 and CAN2 via AMP8 and
Dsub9 connectors. 3500 CAN Adapter box is used to connect
power supply to control units and displays, and to connect a CAN
bus adapter from PC into CAN network.
Plugs of a power supply and Dsub9 connector of a CAN card are
connected with the adapter, and the AMP8 is connected with a
control unit’s or display’s AMP8 connector.
