The ProblemEmployers have a hard time hiring students, because they don’t have a way to validate if their skills will be enough for the job.

skillsgappIf we can create a way for students to demonstrate their skills and potential, employers will hire them.

Personas

Ana is a 25 year old millennial, who has recently graduated from architecture school. She lives in West Hollywood with her parents, and has a good economical situation provided by them, plus some extra income (USD¿?) which comes from her sporadic Uber driving activities. Ana loves to travel and learn from other cities and cultures. In her free time in Los Angeles she likes to go hiking with her boyfriend, visit gallery exhibits and taking her friends to discover the architectural gems hidden in the city. After studying for 6 years, she realized that her experience has nothing to do with what architecture firms are looking on their open job offerings, and has had a very difficult time landing her first professional job.

• Not receiving responses from her job applications

• Not being able to prove her skills in order to even get her first interview.

• Balance her job and personal life • Professional and personal growth • Recognition for her strengths

AnaI can’t get a job interview because I haven’t build anything tangible, and I can’t build anything tangible because I can’t get a job interview.

Ana has applied for 20 jobs in the past month, and feels extremely frustrated since she has only received 5 replies, 4 of which where negative because of lack of experience, and the remaining 1 asked to see her portfolio. Ana feels anxious and lacks confidence, since her portfolio has no tangible projects for the firm to see, only some college projects she designed conceptually. She’s worried because she doesn’t really know how to make potential employers see what her potential and skills are, since they are not necessarily tangible.

James is a 30 year old programer, who has recently decided to shift in his career from coding to product development. He lives in DTLA with 3 roommates, and is still working in programming, which provides a steady USD ¿? income, since he needs to pay his collage loan and has no economical support from his parents. James loves to stay informed, he sacredly reads a mix of websites like Reddit, Forbes, TechCrunch and The New York Times to stay up to date on the world panorama and think about how things will shift in the near future. He also likes to play video games with his roommates, go on occasional dates (thanks to apps such as bumble and happn), and discovering new coffeeshops to relax and enjoy a 20 minute break.

• Not knowing where to search for the jobs that will best suit his needs.

• Not knowing how to prove his potential value during interviews.

• Stay inspired and creative • Job security and stability • Economical Independence

James

James has been dedicated a lot of time during the past year to learn product management skills in order to feel confident to make a job shift, but has realized that he is not getting through the interview process. He is able to get replies to his job applications, probably because of his previous experience in the industry, but as soon as they realize he has not worked in product management before, the interviews seem to reach a dead end. He’s frustrated because he can’t afford to take an internship or a low salary job, since he’s still paying for his collage loan, and he really want’s to have financial stability and social protection.

Scenarios

I want to change my career path, but with the options available I can’t afford the cost of the transition.
