Setaflash Small Scale Flash Point TestingASTM D3278; ASTM D3828; ASTM D7236; ASTM E502; IP 523; IP 524; IP 534; IP 303 (obs); ISO 3679; ISO 3680 (obs); CLP Regulations

Flash point is a key property for products and chemicals and is included in many specifications. Setaflash methods cover flash point tests within the range –30 to 300°C using a small scale closed cup tester. The procedures can determine whether a product will or will not (flash/no flash Method A) at a specified temperature, or the flash point of a sample (Method B).

The small scale ‘ramp’ test method ASTM D7236 provides a definitive flash point result that has established correlation with ASTM D3828. Many specifications call for the use of these test methods as an alternative to ASTM D93 Pensky-Martens or ASTM D56 Tag and other flash point tests.

The Seta PM-93 is a fully automated Pensky-Martens Closed Cup Flash Point Tester which combines state of the art control technology and safety systems to provide the next generation of automated precision flash point instruments.

Seta PM-93 provides rapid sample testing using integral heating and forced air sample cooling systems. An intuitive user menu and colour touch screen operation provide ease of use with real time display of test progress. Large capacity memory allows storage of test profiles, operator names, test methods and in excess of 2000 results.

Unique test profiles enable the test to be set up and repeated quickly without re-entering the test parameters. For example, if numerous ‘diesel’ samples with similar expected flash points are being tested then a test profile can be created and stored to memory so the user can repeatedly select this option.

Operation is simple, the single action lifting arm is aligned so the lid and cup locate perfectly when loading or removing the test cup. The lid and shutter are integral to a hinged pod and fitted with a fire detection probe, fire extinguishing manifold, ignitor, flash detector and temperature probe. The stirrer drive, shutter actuator and ignitor dipping mechanism are also self contained within the pod module.

The ignition source is a purpose-designed extended life hot wire, a gas ignition option is also included. The sample temperature probe is a class A PRT and flash detection is by a thermocouple.

An optional, unique ‘SafeFlash’ fire extinguishing system (35002-0) is available which automatically and immediately activates an extinguisher in the event of excess flame or fire around the test cup. If discharged the screen prompts the user to re-activate the extinguisher by simply replacing the gas canister. Canisters remain sealed inside the instrument until pierced by the actuator mechanism.

Additional safety features include PRT checks, safety dip before starting, over-temperature cut out, gas flame relight and gas shut off.

A password protected ‘calibration’ mode quickly allows verification of instrument performance (a range of traceable verification and calibration materials are available from Seta).

Cleaning & maintenance procedures are simple. The instrument’s lid and shutter can be cleaned in-situ to minimise down time between tests and a quick release mechanism allows easy access to the lid and shutter for maintenance.

Vapour pressureVapour pressure is an important physical parameter which must be monitored in the manufacture and use of many fluids. It is defined as the pressure at which a liquid and its vapour are in equilibrium at a definite temperature.

Vapour pressure is critical to quality control and the performance of both automobile and aviation gasolines. It affects start up, warm up, tendency to vapour lock and provides an indirect measure of potential emission levels. Vapour pressure affects the drying time of solvent-based products and is often important in identifying potential safety characteristics when a liquid, such as crude oil, is stored or transported.

Crude Oil TestsTests on crude oil include those which assist with commercial valuation as well as hazardous material classification. Monitoring crude-oil sediment and water content is essential in crude-oil custody transfer operations. The residual content of unwanted impurities is measured as ‘BS&W’ and typically separated at site to minimize the volume that needs to be transported further.

Desalting is usually the first process in crude oil refining and salt content is measured to assist in preventing the buildup of potentially corrosive components in downstream production facilities.

The MFT is a unique instrument designed to test the Filter Blocking Tendency (FBT) of diesel, biodiesel (B100 & B5/7/20/30), gas oil, gas turbine fuel and kerosene.

FBT analysis is achieved by measuring the pressure differential across a disposable filter. Fuels which have a high FBT could potentially block filters in the distribution network or during use in a vehicle or power plant.

The MFT is also used to determine the FBT for Biofuels which have been ‘cold soaked’ at a temperature just above zero celsius. During the 16 hour cold soak particles of saturated monoglycerides and sterol glucosides can be formed which do not dissolve when the temperature is raised back to ambient. The MFT procedure is able to detect fuels containing these particles.

PC software enables the pressure versus time plots to be stored dynamically, compared against one another and output in a variety of formats to enable data analysis in Excel for example.

FBT Verification Material (91668-0)The material is used to check calibration of the Multi Filtration Tester, including verification of filters, according to IP 387 Procedure B and as referenced in IP PM-EA and CEN N 403. The methods recommend use of a certified verification fluid with a nominal FBT of 2.00, a certificate stating the precise value is supplied with the verification material.

The FBT verification material is produced gravimetrically using a balance traceable to internationally recognised standards and is supplied in a 500ml bottle.

Filter Blocking Tendency (FBT) provides a useful fuel quality parameter to evaluate the cleanliness of middle distillate fuels and biodiesel and biodiesel blends. Also to assess low temperature operability.

Oxidation CharacteristicsOxidation stability provides an indication of the service life of a petroleum product and the potential for the product to deteriorate in the presence of oxygen. The oxidation process can produce acids which lead to corrosion and sludge that can block filters. Fuels and Lubricating oils require different test techniques, many are designed to accelerate the oxidation process by the use of higher temperatures and pressures. A number of instruments are available from Seta to determine the oxidation stability of a product and a small sample is shown below, more can be found on the Seta website.

Conductivity MeasurementASTM D2624 is a primary test method and often the first undertaken at point of loading/delivery to determine the “safe-guarded” nature of a fuel batch. ATF is very pure, often highly refined, and has the potential to accumulate a high static electrical charge which can lead to ignition of explosive vapours. Likewise the reduced sulphur content of modern ULSD fuel creates a less conductive fuel with more potential for buildup of static charge.

The Avcount Lube is a fully configured particle counter suitable for higher viscosity samples such as lubricating and transformer oil. The instrument comprises of a particle counter and pressure delivery system.

The sample is placed in a suitable container (250ml glass bottle) which is inserted into the chamber. The chamber is closed and gently pressurized to approximately 3 bar. Once pressurized the sample can be drawn into the Avcount Lube and measured. When the test is complete the chamber is de-pressurized by turning the locking ring and releasing the mechanism. The system is designed in such a way that the sample cannot be removed from a pressurized system, ensuring maximum operator safety.

The instrument can be used as a stand-alone system or connected to and operated from a PC workstation. The particle counter additionally has the capability to run fuel samples, and using a unique pump configuration system it is possible to change the system configuration, allowing a direct flow through the cell, or the pump to be configured before or after the measurement cell.

FIJI FAME in Jet (SA5000-2)

FIJI FAME in Middle Distillate & Residual Fuel (SA5100-0)

FIJI FAME MultiFuel for Jet, Distillate & Residual Fuels (SA5200-0)ASTM D1655; Defence Standard 91-091; ISO 8217

ASTM D7797; IP 583 Determination of the fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) content of aviation turbine fuel (AVTUR) by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy - Rapid screening method

ASTM D7963 for Middle Distillate and Residual Fuels (Correlates to EN 14078)

• All FAME types from C8 to C22 including Coconut, Mustard, Palm, Rapeseed, Sunflower oil, Soya, Jatropha

• Analysis time 20 minutes

• Certified range 10–150 mg/kg FAME in AVTUR

• Measuring range 0-1000 mg/kg in AVTUR

• Certified range 20ppm to 20% in Middle Distillates

• Laboratory and field instrument

• Fully automatic

• Suitable for untrained operators

• No cleaning solvents required

• No pre-sample preparation required

• 50 ml sample volume

The patented Fame In Jet Instrument (FIJI) has been developed to offer the industry a rapid and easy check on Parts Per Million (ppm or mg/kg) levels of FAME in Aviation fuel using test method IP 583 and ASTM D7797.

FIJI uniquely utilises state of the art FTIR (Fourier Transform Infra-Red Spectroscopy) technology and a patented sample preparation system which allows FAME detection accuracy down to the 10mg/kg level.

FIJI can be used as a field or lab based screening tool to give a quick indication of possible FAME contamination that may then necessitate further investigations. The instrument can be used to prevent expensive testing and avoid costly delays of fuel release.

The FIJI instrument is robust, extremely simple to use and is fully automatic so no specialist operator training is involved. Tests require less than 50ml of sample and typically take under 20 minutes. Results are presented in mg/kg units together with an optional traffic light system for flagging FAME contamination levels of the fuel.

By comparison current analytical tests can take many hours, require complex equipment and demand high skill levels.

Using a unique sample preparation module the sample is pumped at a controlled flow rate though a proprietary disposable cartridge. The sample components are spectrally analysed by the FTIR and a result is displayed in mg/kg and a graphical spectrum is also shown.

The system is self-cleaning so no solvents are required. After each test the cartridge is simply and easily replaced and the instrument is immediately ready for the next sample.

Laboratory Instruments for quality control, analysis and calibration

Measurement Range: 50-100 Water Separation Index (WSI)

Temperature Range: 15°C to 35°C

Sample size: 230ml

Power: Universal, AC 85-264 VAC 42-63Hz

Outputs: USB, Digital Display

Size (HxWxD) / Weight: 38 x 31 x 35 cm / 8kg

Water Separation CharacteristicsWater separation characteristics rate the ease with which a fuel, or fuel-additive combination, will release entrained or emulsified water when passed through a coalescer-type water separator.

The water coalescing property of filter materials is reduced by chemicals in the fuel called surfactants, or “surface active agents”. The presence of surfactants is problematic as it inhibits the ability of the filter to remove water droplets from aviation turbine fuel.

Water Separation Instrument - WSI (SA9000-0)ASTM D8073

• Substantial cost saving per test

• Fully automated sample handling

• Simple operation for non-chemists

• Patented Ultra Sonic Mixer

• 10 minute test duration

• Minimal operator time required (under 3 minutes)

• Sonic mixing sequences providing consistent water droplet size & stable emulsion

• Featuring an API/EI 1581 5th edition filter material

• High resolution optical water detector measuring to <1ppm water concentration

The WSI is designed to predict filter coalescer failure. The instrument is fully automatic with simple touch screen operation. The WSI features a patented Sonic Mixing Technology which eliminates any variables with water droplet size and ensures the same amount of energy is applied to each sample.

Filter cartridges use API/EI 1581 5th edition filter material which is less sensitive to weak surfactants and eliminates uncertainty over static dissipator additives, but is responsive to the presence of ester based additives.

The instrument is fully automatic with simple touch screen operation for 3 step testing.

1. Pour sample into the test beaker and fit filter cartridge

2. Enter sample, operator and filter ID’s using the simple user friendly interface

3. Press “Start”

Whilst in operation the sample is emulsified with dyed water using the ultra sonic mixer. Once emulsified the sample is passed through the filter cartridge to remove any entrained water and then to the detector. Results are calculated from the detector reading and displayed on the screen as the Water Separation Index (WSI). A high WSI, such as 100, indicates the sample coalesces and is relatively free of surfactants.
