GUIDELINES FOR USING SCENTRV® INSECT MONITORING PRODUCTS

Scentry® insect monitoring products are effective pest management tools designed to provide current informationabout an insect pest. Each Scentry® pheromone lure is a synthetic mimic of the potent odor insects produce toattract members of the same species. Scentry® insect traps and lures are provided as an aid to growers inmonitoring and evaluating insect populations and in timing insecticide applications. These materials should beregarded as supplying supplementary information, and should not be the sole basis for decisions concerninginsect control programs. These materials should be used with the advice of qualified pest management consultants. To assure potency of pheromone lures, trap kits and extra lures should be stored in freezing temperatures.

Monitoring traps used with pheromone lures will attract and collect members of a specific insect species.Traps are useful for determining the presence or absence of a pest, monitoring changes in pest populations, ordetermining the emergence patterns of adult insects as an aid in planning control measures. In general, at leastone trap should be used for each field or orchard. Additional traps should be added if:

-The area is very large; over 10 acres.-Abnorrnally large populations or "hot spots" exist which need close attention.-The traps are being used to estimate population density as opposed to just insect detection.

Traps should be located inside the area to be surveyed, not on the border. When using more than one trap perfield, space traps at uniform intervals. In orchards, hang traps in the top 1/3 of the canopy. In field crops, placetraps on posts with the trap opening just above the crop canopy.Deploy traps two weeks prior to the expected date of the first appearance of the adult insect. Inspect traps on aregular basis. Remove insects and debris from the sticky surface of the trap. Replace trap or sticker coated insertwhen they become too dirty to be effective. Replace pheromone lure on a regular basis. Store unused lures in acool place such as a refrigerator.Good record keeping along with knowledge of the insect's life cycle are key to a successful monitoring program. However, monitoring data should not be the sole basis for decisions concerning the timing of insect control programs.Monitoring information should be supplemented with the advice of qualified pest management consultantssuch as your local cooperative extension service representative, USDA personnel, or university researchers whocan assist you in the interpretation of trap catch data and in the timing of control measures.
