Synopsis

SnaaksGenoeg(FunnyEnough)isanentertainingandpoignantdarkcomedy,whichexploresthepaininflictedbyhumourontheaveragehumanbeing.

Thefilm,anoriginalpiecewrittenanddirectedbyDavidMoore,followsadown-and-outcomedian(CasperdeVries)whodriftsfromonesmalltowntoanother.Havingalienatedhisaudiencewithhiscrudecommentsanddirtyhumours,hispopularityhasfaded.Hehitstheroadfightingnotonlyforsurvival,butalsotofindthesparkheoncehad.Hehasbeenreducedtodoingshowsinsmalltownsandworkingforfoodandaccommodation.Ashedriftsfromremotelocationtoremotelocation,successfulcomediansarebeingkidnapped,torturedandmurderedinbizarreways,andheseemstoberidingrightintothecentreofthisstorm.

Themurdersandkidnappingsareinfactbeingorchestratedbyageniuslawyer,KoosvanderMerwe(TobieCronje),whogetscriminalsofftheirchargesinexchangefor“sortingout”comedianswhooffendhimandhisfamilyname.

DeVrieshassomestrangeexperiencesalonghisjourney,somehardandsomelessso,andallhelptomakehimlookathimselfandstarttore-inventhispersona.

Intheend,DeVriesandCronjecomehead-to-headinasomewhatunexpectedfinale.

Iwrotethisstorymorethan20yearsagowhileworkinginatakeawayshopinEpping.Ialwaysfeltthiswouldbeanentertainingfilm.ItwaswrittenforBillFlynnandTollavanderMerwe.Sadly,bothpassedawaybeforeitbecamepossibletoturntheideaintoareality.Wedid,however,convinceWicusvanderMerwetodoacameoforthefilmtorepresenthisfamily.

Withthehelpoftwofriends,ErichHerbstandGerryBezuidenhout,Iraisedthefundsrequiredtocompletethefilm.WehavebeengrantedarebatefromtheDTI,whichwillbemadeavailableoncethefilmisincinemas.

ItravelledextensivelythroughthelesserknownpartsofSouthAfricaandmorespecificallytheKaroo.Allthelocationsfeaturedinthefilmareauthenticandnonehadtoberedesignedorchanged.LikethelocationsformypreviousfilmOnceUponaRoadTrip,whichwassoldtoetv,SnaaksGenoegwasalsoshotinrealplaces,withthestoryadaptedaroundthem.

Themovieiseccentric,butithasgreatfunappealandithasbeenreallywellreceivedbythosewhohaveseenit.Aswithourfirstfilm,webelieveitwilldowellwithfilmcriticsandthepublicalike.

AsaDirector,Ilooktokeepthestylesimpleandthetakeodd.Inadditiontomyloveofimages,IbroughtinStevevanZyltolightandmanagethefirstunit.Theeditingprocesswasaninterestingoneinthatwehadvarious‘directors’managingthecut.CasperdeVries,afilmmakerinhisownright,addedgreatvalueonthefinalcut.

Forme,musicisextremelyimportant.Forthatreason,wehadmusicandascorewrittenspecificallyforthefilm.LunaPaigeandDanielKempbothproducedincrediblesongs.PierreRommelaerewhodidthescoreformyfirstfilmonceagaintiedthefilmtogetherwithhismusicalgenius.

Thishasbeenanincrediblejourneyandonethatdemandedmuch,buthasalsogivenusthedrivetomakemoremoviesinthefuture.

Managingacastandcrewofthissizeandtravellingalmost1500kmswhileshootingisnoteasybutIwouldhappilydoitallagaintomorrow.
