HOW WE USE POINT CLOUDS

> Concept design will typically be completed with a relatively inaccurate model to firm up scope of project and obtain client approval.

> With client approval, a surveyor will be engaged to perform a laser scan of the site as required. Additional survey information will also be obtained such as topography to obtain site conditions.

> A process of then aligning the existing building elements to the point cloud takes place. This then allows us to correctly phase the project for demolition and new construction.

> The process that works for us is to align our concept model to the point cloud as required.

> Elements are also broken up at this stage to allow for demolition and construction phasing.

> This process works for us and our workflows but there are tools that can help automate the processing of point clouds into models for those looking for a more automated solution.

> Not every existing condition is always modelled so using the point cloud for coordination with existing elements is valuable.

> Existing hardwood purlins clashing with new pipework to roof plant is can easily be fixed during documentation to ensure no delays occur on site.

> Clash detection with point clouds is problematic, so visual inspection is required.
