I would like to give you an insight in our Prof. Eggers course.
As you can see at the picture the group of young adults is very familiar with each other. In our team we have 5 teachers and one psychologist.
It is a special course at the VHS. Yesterday you visited the bfz-course which has also a special program and I think today you were in the 3. semester of our regular courses.
The concept of the Prof. Eggers course is catered to the special needs of our participants. They got metally ill in the youth age and therefore they have a very own biography. In the Eglish language there is an expression which I like very much. It ist „people with special abilities“. The tenor of this is the basis of our work.
Yesterday one of our pupils said to me that for him it is negative to be special. He wants to be normal. That is interesting, because for me something special is positive. I think we will discuss it in the classroom.

It is not my intention to give an academic presentation. But I would like to introduce you to the difficulties our pupils encounter here.
Prof. Eggers wrote a new book on the mental illness of children an young adults. And this is a quotation:
That means that if you suffer from psychosis you have problems with cognitive abilities. You can hardly pay attention and concentrate on one subject. Your acting and your thinking is influenced. It is difficult to have a plan oder to have a clear aim. To assess a situation the right way is difficult.
These difficulties have so far prevented those young people from getting a school certificate. However, this is the basis requirement for getting a job. The participation in normal work life is signifant for managing day-by-day life and the risk of illness.
This is why the Prof. Eggers foundation in cooperation with the VHS Essen has established a two-year program that offers these young the opportunity to achieve graduation.
This program was initiated in 2006 and so far 25 participants have successfully completed it. Currently we are in the third round.

The Concept:
Internships
Educational projects in the fields of theatre, art and media
Psychological Attendance
Zu 2: First occupational orientation
Zu 3: These projects attend to be a training on concentration memory. The creative process ecourages identity development of our pupils. I will refer to some concrete examples.
Zu 4: We have a psychologist in our team who is teaching and also attending our weekly team meetings. Apart from the special educational work, she further has a psychological and therapeutical view with regard to the situation and the pupils. Further, she is available as contact person for our participants.
Zu 5: Our team supervision which we continously conduct at an external psychologist helps us a lot to consciously understand the effects of the dynamic in class on our team.
It is very important for us to maintain a good cooperation among each other.
We take part in teacher trainings that sharpen our view with regard to the situation of the participants. For example, we attended a training about the effect and perception of language. Next, we will attend another training about self- and social perception.

The educational work is based on apprecation and respect of our participant. They can always feel accepted and taken seriously. This is a basic need of our work.

What hands can do

This is an example for the German lesson. And an example to strengthen the self-confidence, which is often very low.
The students were asked to write a poem on their own. And here it is the japanese Haiku. It has the title „ what hands can do“ and I try to translate it, but unfortunately it won´t rhyme any longer:
They can touch

And at least I want to give you an insight into our theatre-project.
There was a question at the beginning. What is a team? What impact has social contacts on the individual?
You here see the picture of the beginning of this presentation.
And the students „played“ with emotions… as you can see now.

And this picture is the one I like very much. It shows that the students don´t want to be stigmatized, because they are mentally ill.
And here in our institution we try to inform the public in Essen about psychosis. We established an event where we invite the citizens of Essen and the institutions that work with mentally ill people and that is our red saloon.
