Industry Immersion Experience Program

What will I do for a job in the future? This is a BIG question! But also a very important one.

Getting ready for the world of work includes understanding who we are and what we value. We need to know why we work but also who we would like work for. The Industry Immersion Experience Program will help you in researching future careers and perhaps life options!

What is an Industry Immersion Experience? An Industry Immersion Experience is an opportunity to actively engage in a morning, an afternoon or a day on site in industry. It is an opportunity to see how industry operates to give you a better understanding of the world of work in order to help you make decisions about future subjects, courses and training. You will be able to hear directly from Managers, CEOs and staff regarding areas of current and future skills needs in industry, as well as ask questions about working in the industry. You can find out ‘first hand’ what skills and training are required and what employers look for when recruiting. The Industry Immersion Experience Program is an ideal opportunity to gather information to help you with your future career and pathway planning.

What can I do to prepare for an Industry Immersion Experience? It’s a great idea to do your own research in order to help you formulate questions you can ask on the day. Conduct a web search of the company you are going to visit. What do you think might be some of the careers that exist in that industry? What do you want to know about those careers? What is it like for the people that work in those positions? Do they get to travel a lot? Do they work long hours? Do they sometimes have to work at night? How long did it take them to find a job in the industry? What was the first job they ever did and what did they learn from that job that helps them in the role they have now? There are many questions you could ask that will help you decide whether it is an area you would like to research further.

Classroom Based Industry Explorer

Activity #6

Each Industry Immersion Experience features activities to build your skills and knowledge about work in this industry. Your teacher will take you through these activities back at school.

Activity A (designed for Levels 7 & 8)ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS – The Business Environment

With a partner research a famous Australian Entrepreneur.

What are the characteristics they possess that have helped them to be successful?

What skills and attributes do they have that have helped them to build their businesses?

Through your research select 3 top skills your entrepreneur has that has helped them be successful.

Create a ‘How To’ infographic that gives examples of ways in which people can develop these skills.

For example; Janine Allis started her company ‘Boost Juice’ from her home, and opened her first juice bar in Adelaide. She had no business experience but had a passion for fresh juice. This passion was the main driver behind her success. To be a successful entrepreneur, you must have passion for what you do.

Present your infographic to the class.

Activity B (designed for Levels 9 & 10)ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS – Work and Work Futures

Professional Services encompasses a number of occupations including lawyers, advertising professionals, architects, accountants, financial advisers, engineers etc; any occupation that offers a knowledge based service to clients.

You are to write an article based on an interview you have with a person in a Professional Services position that highlights the skills and attributes required to fulfil their role.

Things to consider are:

Do they possess any inherent personality traits that drew them to that occupation?

What skills do they draw upon the most in their job?

How have they developed their skills and what kind of ongoing professional development have they completed to upskill?

What do they believe are the most important skills and attributes to have to be successful in their industry?

As a class collate all the articles together for a book that can be sourced in the library or careers office.
