3D Printing In the News
Earlier on this week I watched the
Netflix documentary on 3D printing called “Print the legend.” It features many of the big guns in 3D printing
such as Makerbot and Formlabs and tracks their progress to revolutionize the world and gain market
dominance. Each of these companies feature as a real rags-to-riches story as it shows the humble beginnings
where each company started up until the present day where they represent multimillion pound companies. Within this documentary there was a side feature on an individual called Cody Wilson whose company
(Defense Distributed) planned to produce a 3D printable gun which would be available to the masses. He had
initially created a 3D file which anyone was able to download and print. He uploaded the plans onto the website
www.thingiverse.com which is Makerbot’s opensource sharing platform for 3D digital designs. Once word had
spread of these plans Makerbot removed the files and took the stance that they would not condone such action.
As did Stratasys who removed the 3D printer that Cody Wilson had leased from them.
As I watched this I could not fathom how an individual could think that allowing any Joe Blogg the method to
yield a firearm was “liberating” to use a direct quote. I mean don’t get me wrong, we as individuals should have
the right to many a thing but when atrocities such as Sandy Hook happen as a result of slack firearm regulations
then I believe it is right to err on the side of caution with such liberties.
So then imagine my surprise to read that despite this Cody Wilson had not been deterred, or came to any sense,
and has produced a 3D printer capable of producing an untraceable gun for a mere £743 ($1,200)So then
imagine my utter disillusionment when I continued to read and saw that he had sold out of the printers, over
200 in under 24hours since release. Demand was so high for these printers that he has had to up the price to
cope with the pressures as well as hiring an extra member of staff to complete the sales.
All I can think is who is buying these printers?
What kind of people is it that are interested in untraceable guns?? – No one with good intentions surely.
When we started 3Style we were often met with the ill informed when it came to 3D Printing. People who did
not know what 3D is or what it is capable of.
This is what I believe is the main thing holding 3D printing back from truly revolutionizing the way we make
things (especially here in the UK) and also allowing it to transgress all communities and not just the educated or
well off.
So then imagine the negative effect that a travesty such as those mentioned earlier was to happen as a result of a
3D printed gun. I propose that many of the 200 sales that Cody has accrued are from fellow Americans where
the affiliation with guns is more prevalent and laws somewhat relaxed.
I therefore believe that should gun control laws become stricter, something which is commonly talked about
following an incident, that they should look at banning the ability to produce 3D printed guns.
I mean, there is no way to govern the production of firearms should an individual design and produce it on their
own machine – but having ready-to-make designs available to download from the internet is an unnecessary risk
that I believe can only end badly.
I’d love to hear what everyone thinks so please leave a comment or get in touch.
Thanks

P.S No, we will not 3D print you a gun!
