CAT

The Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) is a vocational qualification

designed by ACCA that will allow you to support the work of professional

accountants. The final-level examinations are equivalent in standard to the

first year of a university degree programme. Consequently, CAT graduates

are allowed to move directly to the ACCA Applied Skills level.

The knowledge, skills and practical experience you have gained while

studying the CAT qualification can exempt you from certain subjects

and count towards the practical experience requirement of the ACCA

Qualification.

There are nine examinations to the CAT, which are split into four levels. Each

level is designed to test the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to

work in accounting support roles. As well as completing your examination,

you will have to gain a minimum of one year relevant experience while

undergoing your financial training to achieve the Technician qualification.

When you have fulfilled the criteria for Certified Accounting Technician

status, ACCA will confer on you the title of Certified Accounting Technician

and you will be able to use the letters ‘CAT’ after your name.

The CAT qualification could be your stepping stone to the ACCA

Qualification and membership of the global body for professional

accountants.

Sunway TES CAE Audit Simulation programme is the first and only

real-world audit experience embedded within classroom education for

ACCA programme. It is an exclusive partnership between Sunway TES CAE

and the Big 5 professional services, namely, PwC, EY, KPMG, Deloitte and BDO.

This program was first introduced in December 2015. It is conducted twice a year in

June and December months. The programme consists of three components including

Audit Workshop, Audit Simulation and Audit Review.

Students are grouped into 7 to 8 members and they would together to accomplish

these three components within seven days in the campus.

Prior conducting audit works, students would be scheduled to attend a one-day

Audit Workshop to familiar with the industrial audit practice. Then, they begin to

conduct 5-days auditing work which involves meeting with clients and summarising

audit findings for their work files. On the last day, the audit team would present audit

findings to the audit seniors of the Big 5 professional services for review.

OBJECTIVE

On participation of the Audit Simulation programme, students acquire practical audit work skills through effective time management; team work; communication and leadership. These skills are essential to ensure work readiness. It also enhances

students’ knowledge through practical

learning, exposing to real life audit and the

opportunity to secure employment offers.

Sunway TES CAE initiates this experiential

learning programme with the aim to:-

• prepare students to understand the

audit work process and procedure

through practical learning

• expose students to the audit real life

environment

• offer opportunity for students to secure

pre-employment offers while they are

still studying their programme

the performance of

audit procedures and

preparation of audit

reports

• acquire the lifelong

learning skills through

information management

during the programme

• appreciate the

values, attitudes and

professionalism for the

industry

17

TESTIMONIALS FROM STUDENTS & EMPLOYERS

Team WorkThrough participation in Audit Simulation, we learned to work and persevere as a team regardless of race, religion and age. Our best experience was being able to work as a great team and accomplish our objectives.

Time ManagementOn the 5-day auditing work, we realised that time management is an important success factor to accomplish a task. We learned the effective ways to manage work pressure within little time given.

Self ImprovementThrough work-together with team mates during the Audit Simulation, we acknowledged that communication was the biggest challenge among us. We began to learn more about ourselves, accept each other’s weaknesses; learn to agree to disagreement; learn to be a good listener; etc. All these experiences are essential to manage our future career.

Real Life Audit ExperienceWe were able to apply audit techniques and procedures from the knowledge learned through FAU and AA classes. We gathered that sampling risks; financial statement assertions; documenting audit work are key essentials when conducting auditing work. We strongly recommend students to participate in the Audit Simulation!

The teams were very well prepared during the audit review. Their presentation on audit findings was clear and straight to the point. The teams demonstrated good teamwork and they communicated well among themselves.

The students exhibited high level of enthusiasm in learning and they asked good and relevant questions. Through the audit work file, I commend that the team leads distributed work to team members evenly. I had a pleasant audit review session with the teams.

I truly impressed by the well documented audit work file as it was as good as the industrial standard. The audit work file was properly labelled, cross-referenced and appropriate tick marks! The teams were able to demonstrate a sharp understanding of the audit procedures performed to challenge some of the assertions.

The teams’ performance were good. Their presentation focused on main findings and they managed to identify most of the accounting issues. Overall, they showed strong effort in the Audit Simulation.

The teams did exceptionally well and almost all issues are covered. They were well prepared and organized with the presentation. Each member showed understanding in the audit procedures and issues highlighted.

CERTIFICATE IN FINANCE, ACCOUNTING AND BUSINESS

CFAB

What is the CFABThe Certificate in Finance, Accounting and Business (CFAB) was launched by The Institute

of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) in September 2008 in United

Kingdom (UK) as a new stand-alone business qualification. ICAEW CFAB is a respected

Professional (BFP) designation and chartered accountancy with the ACA qualification.

It provides essential knowledge in the fundamentals of finance, accounting and business,

and can be used as an entry route into the ICAEW programme.

The CFAB for school leaversFollowing the launch of the CFAB in UK, Sunway TES CAE formulated an innovative

WHY ICAEW AT SUNWAY TES CAE?

THE ACA EXAM STRUCTURE

The ACA comprises three levels – the Certificate Level, Professional Level and Advanced Level.

• CERTIFICATE LEVEL Certificate level papers introduce you to the core concepts underpinning accountancy.

• PROFESSIONAL LEVEL Professional level papers is where you can demonstrate how you can develop and apply technical knowledge and skills.

• ADVANCED LEVEL The Advanced Level is where the ACA demonstrates its world-leading quality. The modules will stretch you to adopt a multi-disciplinary approach and prove that you can use judgment as well as technical and analytical skills.

The Case Study, which is based on a Harvard Business School model, will test your professional skills in the context of a specific business issue and challenge you on multiple areas of the syllabus.

Ethics, technical work experience and initial professional development are integrated throughout both stages. This supports your business decision-making and puts your learning into context.

The diagram below shows the progression route to becoming an ACA.

WHAT TRAINING IS NEEDED TO COMPLETE THE ACA

The ACA qualification combines study and exams with ‘on-the-

job’ experience. You’ll be based with an employer, doing real

work and earning a salary as you train. It normally takes three to

five years to complete, depending on the route you take. You’ll

need to find an authorised employer to support you and enter

into a training agreement with them.

The training agreement will outline the support you’ll receive

during training and will include details about tuition, study leave

and mentoring.

In addition to giving you time out of the office to study, your

employers will pay for your tuition with a dedicated provider and

also pay for your exam and student registration fees.

You’ll need to successfully complete the ACA qualification before

you can apply to become a member of ICAEW. Once this is

approved, you can use the letters ACA after your name and will

be recognised as an ICAEW Chartered Accountant.

The ACA is both rigorous and

challenging. But that’s why our chartered

accountants are always in demand.

26

27

Practical work experience

You need to record 450 days of relevant

‘on-the-job’ work experience during your period of approved training.

Accountancy, finance and business modules

15 modules, each with its own exam. These

modules are staged across three levels: the first introduces you to core concepts; the latter two build on your growing technical knowledge and experience.

AND BUSINESS MODULES

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

THERE ARE FOUR ELEMENTS TO ACA TRAINING

Ethics and professional scepticism

Ethics and professional scepticism are an essential part of being a chartered accountant. You’ll follow a structured programme to ensure you apply them - focusing on areas such as integrity, objectivity and independence.

Professional development

Demonstrate your competence in seven key professional skills (such as communication, team working and decision making) by providing an example from your work experience.
