This course builds on the midwife’s knowledge of the professional regulation of midwifery practice. It focuses on the professional rules and codes from a midwifery perspective and also considers the aspects of statute, civil and contractual law that regulate and inform clinical midwifery care.

Entry RequirementsEntry is open to all healthcare professionals. All applications must be approved by your manager or employer.

Course ContentDuring the course you will provide maternity care in either a hospital, community or integrated service. You will be encouraged to apply the theory of this course to the practice you observe and undertake. The course is also shared with pre-registration midwifery students.

The course will enable you to enhance your knowledge and understanding of your professional accountability within midwifery practice. This will be facilitated through reflection on practice and incident analysis.

Course StructureThis course is taught over a ten week period and is normally in the autumn term, please check the website for course dates.

Skills and Competencies you will gainUpon successful completion you will be able to:• examine the role and function of the Nursing

and Midwifery Council in relation to the regulation of the midwifery profession

• identify and apply the current statutes and associated statutory instruments which govern and inform midwifery practice

• explore the concept of human rights in relation to the planning and delivery of contemporary midwifery care

• discuss the role and function of the Supervisor of Midwives, identifying the professional and legal frameworks that underpin this role

• identify ethical principles and discuss their application to midwifery practice

• identify and apply a reflective model to a problematic clinical scenario

Assessment MethodThe assessment method for this module is a 15 minute viva and a 2,000 word reflective essay.
