The goal of the Pre K-12 Educational School Services at Camden County College is to provide quality workshops, conferences, and other services to school districts in our regional area and across New Jersey. Through our service, your district or school will be able to access professional development at our locations or at your school district.

With the many State and Federal educational mandates and the desire to keep staff informed of the newest instructional strategies and research based programs, the need for professional development is paramount. In this hands-on workshop, participants will create their own Google Classroom and explore the many Google applications that will save time and energy while elevating instruction, including Google Docs, Slides and Forms. Participants will also discuss the SAMR Model, a framework for transforming teaching with technology, and how it relates to Google products.

In this participatory workshop, attendees will discuss facts and myths about autism, gain an overview of how to support students with autism inclusively, and learn about person-first perspectives concerning those with autism labels. Dr. Elder will discuss specific classroom strategies he has found effective with his own students, and facilitate small group discussions during which participants will review instructional content for students with autism labels. Participants will also create materials that can be immediately applied to their specific classroom settings.

DR. ELDER’S research focuses on the development of sustainable inclusive education practices in under-resourced schools. During the 2015-16 academic year, he conducted his doctoral research in Kenya as a Fulbright scholar. Dr. Elder has published in many journals including the Disability & Society, International Journal of Inclusive Education, and the Journal of International Special Needs Education to name a few. In the Fall, he will continue his work as a professor-in-residence at Bowe Elementary School in Glassboro and teach a PhD course on topics related to disability studies. When not teaching, he enjoys traveling, live music, and spending time with family.

This workshop will focus on designing and implementing individualized behavior improvement plans for helping students learn to behave independently and responsibly. The focus will be on identifying the factors that perpetuate any chronic misbehavior and then designing intervention strategies that “fit” the “function” of the problem. This workshop reviews the most recent legislation, the definition of dyslexia and the impact on the development of foundational reading. Participants will gain an understanding of the causes, prevalence and treatment for Dyslexia.

CHERYL TARTAGLIONE is a Reading Specialist with a master’s degree in reading. She is an OrtonGillingham therapist who served for nine years as a practicum instructor for Fairleigh Dickinson University at the Children’s Dyslexia Center in Northfield, NJ. A member of the International Dyslexia Association (IDA) and the International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council (IMSLEC), she is trained in several multisensory based reading programs including Wilson Language System, Language, Project Read (all strands) and LiPs. Cheryl Tartaglione has provided in-service training for ASAH, EIRC, NJAIS, NJIDA and the Foundation for Educational Administration, as well as numerous school districts throughout NJ. She is currently serving as a reading specialist and a response to intervention teacher for Glassboro Public Schools.

The NJ Student Learning Standards in Science call for a three-dimensional approach to science and engineering education in every K-12 classroom where science is all or part of the curriculum. This shift from previous standards requires both students and teachers to experience “science as both a body of interconnected knowledge and an evidence-based model building enterprise that continually extends, refines, and revises knowledge.” Students asking questions to drive their own learning, constructing scientific explanations to promote understanding, and developing models to represent ideas are essential to this approach. This workshop will provide information on the assessment and implementation of phonemic awareness in your classroom. Participants will receive an overview of the specific mental health issues present in schools today. Discussions on how students display communication patterns and behaviors and how to distinguish from intentional disruptive behaviors will take place. Specific intervention techniques for communication with students who may be presenting mental health concerns will be discussed. Additionally, school-based strategies and interventions in reference to restorative discipline practices will be presented with ways to incorporate social emotional development to combat some mental health concerns and increase coping skills.

DR. KARA IEVA is as an Associate Professor in the Counseling in Educational Settings program at Rowan University. She also serves as the Director of Academic and Student Services for the STEAM Academy pre-college programs. She is a former Spanish teacher and school counselor in both the middle and high school settings. Kara’s areas of research interest include counseling students P-20 in college and career readiness, with expertise in group counseling and supervision, and implementing social-emotional development into classroom curricula to aid with coping skills. .

DR. STEVE WEHRLE, EdD is an elementary Health and Physical Education teacher in the state of New Jersey. He has served on several state and regional committees advocating for health and physical education curriculum reform and importance. Steve recently received the New Jersey elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year award from NJAHPERD, as well as the SHAPE America MABEL award for commitment and service to the fields of health and physical education. His presentations have covered topics ranging from physical activity and its influence on behavior, cognitive benefits of physical activity, fitness instruction and testing, and integration of a comprehensive physical activity program in schools.

In this participatory workshop, attendees will discuss Response to Intervention (RTI) as a multi-tier approach to the early identification and support of students with learning and behavior needs. The RTI process begins with high-quality scientifically based instruction and universal screening of all children in the general education classroom. Participants will look at interventions provided to struggling learners at increasing levels of intensity to accelerate their rate of learning. The multi-tiered approach, used to efficiently differentiate instruction for all students, and how instructional interventions should be used to match identified deficits, will be discussed.

In this workshop, participants will review writing useful IEPs. They will focus on the “three-way match” between present levels, goals, and modifications. Participants will learn to strengthen the clarity and overall effectiveness of their IEPs. Writing useful PLAAFPs, goals, and modifications, as well as transition plans will be discussed and modeled. This workshop is for elementary and secondary special education teachers.

The role of the teacher’s aide has morphed into the role of the paraprofessional. This workshop examines how you can successfully work side-by-side with the classroom teacher. We will explore sub-topics that will enhance classroom and behavior management, the paraprofessional’s teaching roles, and the methods that you can implement to help keep creativity alive in the classroom. All participants will have access to the presenter’s e-mail address and the workshop slides, to ensure that coaching will be available long after the initial training has ended.

DR. JAY DUGAN has been an educator for over 40 years. He has been a public school teacher, curriculum supervisor, principal, and superintendent. Currently he serves as the Vice President of curriculum, instruction, and professional development for the charter school management company, CSMI. He also serves as an adjunct college professor at Rowan University. Dr. Dugan offers trainings, consultations, and keynote addresses across the state of New Jersey. He was inducted into the New Jersey Council of Education in 2015, and selected for the Rowan Alumni Board of Trustees in 2018.

Implementing the model is the best way to advocate for the profession and for your school counseling program – define what you do as a school counselor and how students are different as a result of what you do. This session is perfect for those ready to get started with a comprehensive school counseling program and is also a good refresher for those needing basic information. After attending the session, you will be able to: 1) Explain how implementing the model leads to stronger advocacy for your students and program, 2) Differentiate between direct and indirect services, and 3) Identify ways to share and use data with stakeholders.

JENNIFER GRIMALDI has over twenty years of school counseling experience in elementary, middle, and high school. She is the past president of New Jersey School Counselor Association (NJSCA) and has held various leadership roles in the field. Jennifer is currently the Director of District School Counseling at Washington Township Public Schools overseeing the PK-12 school counselors and student assistance coordinators, Section 504, Home Instruction, and School Climate.

National Model: How to improve your school counseling toolkit

Children are naturally curious, and often drive their parents to distractions by asking, “Why? Why? Why?” Curiosity is inherent in the scientific method. One challenge that teachers face is motivating students with demonstrations and lessons which address the New Jersey Student Learning Standards: Science in a way that is relevant, goal oriented, practical, and economical. Often the same demonstration (in terms of materials) can be presented to different grades by scaffolding the questions which the students must consider. A melting ice cube can be a curiosity in First Grade and a thoughtful exercise around both density and phase change in Fifth Grade. A selection of different brands of “white” copier paper transforms from a discussion about using descriptors correctly to an introduction to the electromagnetic spectrum. This course will address a wide range of curricula challenges using materials that can be purchased on a shoe-string budget at local discount stores. Attendees will have the opportunity to experience the lessons, to prepare classroom exercises for their own use, and to ask for assistance against challenges that they have or will face.

HARVEY GOLD, a native of Central New Jersey, obtained a BA in both History and Chemistry from Cornell University and a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After graduate school, he was on the faculty at the University of Delaware for seven years before beginning a 30-year career at DuPont. While working at DuPont, he helped provide science training for teachers in Delaware as part of DuPont’s support for the Next Generation Science Standards. Since retirement, Harvey has presented STEM and STEAM lessons to multiple groups in Delaware.

An In-district Program toSupport the Implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards

District Administrators, Directors, Principals, SupervisorsAre you confident that the teaching and learning of science and engineering in your school/district occur with optimal outcomes and reflect the instructional and conceptual shifts called for by the new science standards? If your answer is no or I’m not sure, or perhaps, then consider partnering with Camden County College to ensure that your students, when developing their conceptual understanding of science and engineering: • construct evidenced-based scientific explanations• ask their own questions to drive their learning • participate in scientific argumentation• create models to explain scientific phenomena• engage in the iterative process of engineering design • actualize the nature of science inquiry, and much more!When a school or district participates in this program a K-12 science educator with extensive experience and expertise in STEM education will work closely, during the 2018-19 school year, in-district, with teachers and administrators to ensure student success in science and engineering education.

PROGRAM COMPONENTS: The following two components will be customized for your school/district. • Professional learning workshops for teachers and administrators to enhance their understanding and

actualization of the new science standards. This component can be configured in a combination of various formats:

– Full day workshops (5 hour time frame)– Half day workshops (3 hour time frame)– After-school and/or PLC workshops (2 hour time frame)

• Class visitations to provide teacher support for the development and implementation of science lessons, with feedback for reflection and growth. This component can include 3, 6 or 9 class visits for each teacher during the school year.

This ground breaking workshop can be brought right to the classroom with your students. You do not need a professional development day. Our presenter will demonstrate how to teach your students to write for any prompt. Teachers can be trained in their classrooms or in groups on the following:• Core Curriculum Standards• Close Reading Techniques• Modeled & Guided Writing Strategies• Unique Conferencing Strategies

These techniques and strategies will build student confidence and knowledge. Three 80 minute work sessions can be taught in grades 2 through 8 during a regular school day.

SPICE is a unique writing workshop that can easily be implemented in the classroom the next day.

From the first incision to the last suture, students can witness the excitement and drama of science in action. Through real-time interactive video conferencing with the hospital doctor and surgical team, students will have a front row seat to surgeries. We will offer Live From Surgery sessions on Kidney Transplants, Neurosurgery, and Robotic Surgery. We also have the option to offer Meet the Surgeon sessions, where students interact with individual surgeons who explore their surgeries and share their expertise.
