  • As a PSL, you are now under intense pressure to keep on top of the ever increasing workload and it is essential for you to adapt and equip yourself with the skills required to add greater value to your firms daily operations.

Increasingly law firms are experiencing greater demands from clients for value added services such as tailored commercially-relevant updates or more flexible know-how advice and support. Professional Support Lawyers who once thought of fee earners in their practice group as their client have now evolved to serve the firms clients. It is crucial for them to encompass elements of client service, marketing and business development in order to remain competitive.

The conference opens with Allen & Overy presenting a case study on providing clients with added value using social media. The session will explore the various tools blogs, Twitter and LinkedIn that can be used to provide added value to clients and raise industry profile. It will also demonstrate how to engage clients through videos and podcasts. This will be followed by a case study from DLA Piper on how to collaborate with the marketing and business development teams to engage clients. The session will outline how to generate a campaign concept and show you how to launch the campaign to clients and the media.

Gain insight from an interactive client clinicThis conference will provide you with a unique opportunity to communicate with clients and have your queries answered first hand. It involves an interactive client clinic, providing perspectives from the Head of Legal at Travelex, Professional Support Lawyer at BAE Systems, Legal Know-How and Information Coordinator at Arup, Professional Support Lawyer at Sky and Director of Operations at Barclays Legal. The client clinic will explore the range of value added services that clients look for and discuss the social media tools you should be using to provide them with better commercial awareness. The session will provide you with invaluable insights on the KM priorities of clients, their training needs, the social media tools they use and how you can help them.

Overcome internal barriers to successAs a PSL, one of the greatest barriers to overcome is obtaining internal buy-in. To help you with this, international trainer Nick Davies will carry out a practical workshop to provide you with the key ingredients required to ensure internal buy-in for your projects. The session will outline the essentials of persuading and influencing. It will also give you hints and tips on networking to build external and internal relationships.

While the PSL role has expanded, it is still essential to overcome internal challenges and demonstrate the value of PSLs. A joint presentation from Greenwoods Solicitors and The Knowledge Business will provide you with the framework to effectively demonstrate ROI in KM projects using measurement systems. This session will guide you on how to design measurement systems from the outset of projects and help you decide which metrics to combine to obtain a balanced measure of performance.

Now more than ever, it is essential for PSLs to become thought leaders in transformational change. Addleshaw Goddard will present a two

year case study which explores the practical issues of implementing organisational change within the PSL function and equip you with the skills to manage the pitfalls in making changes. The session will also demonstrate the benefits of aligning the PSL function with the overall firm strategy and provide you with the PSL perspective on dealing with the impact of restructuring the practice function.

The PSL future take controlBerwin Leighton Paisner will outline their career path and discuss the various possibilities open to their PSLs. The session will also guide you on the new skills required to meet the expectations of the PSL role and enable you to take ownership of your career.

This will be followed by an interactive panel discussion, with insights from Baker & McKenzie, Norton Rose Fulbright and Slaughter and May, on forecasting potential developments for the PSL role. This session will tackle the challenging question of who deals with the traditional tasks as the PSL role evolves to be more client-facing. The panel will also explore the impact that embracing the business development aspect will have on your exponentially expanding workload and outline the new functions and systems required to carve out a role for yourself when everything is a priority.
