The use of tobacco, which is completely predictable and preventable, sll constutes the most important risk factor for health. It is esmated that in Italy there are about 85,000 deaths per year due to tobacco consumpon or to the consequences of passive smoking. In addion, smoking is among the most important causes of the increasing ine- qualies in health. According to ISTAT data (2012) the percentage of smokers in Italy, in the populaon aged 14 and over is 22.3% and Veneto Region smokers amount to 18.6%. “Passi” surveil- lance system refers that in 2012 almost 23.5% of the Vene- to Region populaon (27% men and 21% women) between 18 and 69 years are smokers vs. 26.8% at naonal level. To address the problem of tobacco use much has been done in Italy and in the Veneto Region on several fronts. The commitment at naonal level receives new impetus aſter the well-known Law Sirchia, and aſter the (2008) ra- ficaon of the FCTC-Framework Convenon on Tobacco Control (Law no. 189/2012) through which the ban on the sale and supply of tobacco products was extended to mi- nors under 18 years and in the recent contribuon to the Revision of the Proposal for a Direcve on tobacco to pro- tect the health of cizens. To deal with a complex problem such as the use of tobac- co, we need a comprehensive approach, a combinaon of integrated and cross-sectoral policies and strategies, as well as strong alliances between those actors who can help to create smoke-free living environments , as proposed for example by Bibione Smoke-Free Beach iniave, in order to promote a culture free from smoking. This workshop, organized within the Project Maone Inter- naonal aims at proposing a moment of analysis, discus- sion and debate on the consequences of the exposure to tobacco and its consumpon and on the framework of regulatory and prevenve measures currently foreseen at naonal, European and internaonal level for an "integraon of policies in favour of health." TOBACCO AND HEALTH

Integrated policies for health promotion

Friday, September 13, 2013

BIBIONE, Italy

Savoy Beach Hotel, 51 Corso Europa

PROGETTO MATTONE INTERNAZIONALE

In Italy and in Europe, chronic diseases, which have in com-mon the following four major risk factors - smoking, drin-king, incorrect nutrition and physical inactivity - are re-sponsible for almost 86% of deaths, 77% of healthy life years lost and 75% of health care costs. The use of tobacco, which is completely predictable and preventable, still constitutes the most important risk factor for health. It is estimated that in Italy there are about 85,000 deaths per year due to tobacco consumption or to the consequences of passive smoking. In addition, smoking is among the most important causes of the increasing ine-qualities in health. According to ISTAT data (2012) the percentage of smokers in Italy, in the population aged 14 and over is 22.3% and Veneto Region smokers amount to 18.6%. “Passi” surveil-lance system refers that in 2012 almost 23.5% of the Vene-to Region population (27% men and 21% women) between 18 and 69 years are smokers vs. 26.8% at national level. To address the problem of tobacco use much has been done in Italy and in the Veneto Region on several fronts. The commitment at national level receives new impetus after the well-known Law Sirchia, and after the (2008) rati-fication of the FCTC-Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (Law no. 189/2012) through which the ban on the sale and supply of tobacco products was extended to mi-nors under 18 years and in the recent contribution to the Revision of the Proposal for a Directive on tobacco to pro-tect the health of citizens. To deal with a complex problem such as the use of tobac-co, we need a comprehensive approach, a combination of integrated and cross-sectoral policies and strategies, as well as strong alliances between those actors who can help to create smoke-free living environments , as proposed for example by Bibione Smoke-Free Beach initiative, in order to promote a culture free from smoking. This workshop, organized within the Project Mattone Inter-national aims at proposing a moment of analysis, discus-sion and debate on the consequences of the exposure to tobacco and its consumption and on the framework of regulatory and preventive measures currently foreseen at national, European and international level for an "integration of policies in favour of health."
