Today’s medical achievements are due to scientists and physicians’ efforts
in various civilizations all around the world. The results of these efforts, experi-
ences, trials and errors of human society are the creation of modern medicine and
helping to reduce the patients’ pain. In the meantime, many therapeutic methods,
rooted in the history and culture of large nations and civilizations, are still used as
traditional and complementary therapies throughout the world which are approved
and supported by WHO in integrated manner with conventional medicine.
Meanwhile, recognition of history of medicine and the role of various schol-
ars and civilizations is only possible through research. Research in history of med-
icine has an interdisciplinary origin and consequently involves various groups of
medical sciences, history, literature, linguistics, archeology, and so on.
Undoubtedly, each of the various civilizations has contributed to the history
of medicine. One of the most important medical models in history is Persian med-
icine, which dates back to ancient times, and has been closely linked to other
medical civilizations such as Greece, Rome, Egypt and India. This type of medi-
cine flourished in Islamic era, and especially in the era of the golden civilization
of Islam (9th-13th centuries) it became one of the major milestones in the history
of the medicine throughout the world. The medicine in the Islamic era is regard-
ing the realm and power of the governments at the time; spreads from the west-
ernmost parts of Iran to Africa and Andalusia (Spain), and over time, it reaches
many countries such as India. Many of the books of physicians in Islamic civiliza-
tion such as the Canon of Avicenna and Razi’s Al-Havi, were taught as the most
important medical resources even in Europe until the 17th Century.
Considering the significance of medicine in the Islamic civilization (Persian medi-

cine) whose roots are found in ancient Iran and even the ancient medical myths of
this region, experts, scholars and students in various disciplines from all over the
world are invited to participate in the upcoming congress. It is needless to say that
the participation of invitees and the presentation of their research will academical-
ly enrich this important scientific event in medical history.

TUMS’ School of Persian Medicine (SPM) was established in 2007, as a
result of an increasing national interest and need in traditional, alternative, and
complementary medical services. This school, as the oldest and most distin-
guished school of traditional medicine in Iran, is the postgraduate academic center
for educating talented students at Ph.D. level in traditional medicine and pharma-
cy of traditional medicine; and also Master level in history of medicine.
SPM intends to develop, both academically and practically, Persian medi-
cine at home and around the world. To this end, the school’s curriculum provides
the students with an opportunity to promote their skills both in theory and practice
in different fields of clinical traditional medicine as well as nutrition, materia
medica, history and pharmacy. The curriculum is designed with an approach to
filling the gap between university and industry in the field of herbal medicine and
traditional medicine. This school admits applicants with an M.D. or a Pharm.D.
degree into Ph.D. programs and B.Sc. degree into Master program. The specific
objectives of this school are for students to gain an understanding of how to com-
bine traditional medicine with current medicine, and to become broad-minded and
ethical specialists.

Born in 1970 in Mashhad, A Physician with systemic approach to health
and disease, started the integrative medicine firstly with phytotherapy, naturopa-
thy, and energy medicine but after inflowing in the first academic PhD course of
Persian medicine in 2007 in Tehran University he could extend this systemic ap-
proach more widely and deeply concerning historical manuscripts and ancient
teachings of sage philosopher-physicians in Persian culture and civilization. He
personally prefers to use his self-created term of “Hikmat-based medicine” in-
stead of terms like Unani medicine, Arabic medicine, Islamic medicine or even
Persian medicine. He presented some philosophical and empirical dimensions of
corporeal spirits in the human heart and brain in his PhD thesis in 2013 with re-
spect to his main concentration in the field of mind-body medicine. His main at-
tention in medical practice involves with psycho-neurological and autoimmune
disorders through a psychosomatic approach. He also corrected, translated, and
edited more than 15 manuscripts in the field of “Hikmat-based medicine” and be-
lieves that the first pre-requisite for correcting, editing, or translating historical
medical manuscripts is a systemic attitude which converges the literal, linguistic,
philosophical, empirical, and cultural dimensions of them. Currently he teaches
researches and practices in Mashhad University of Medical Sciences.

Shahrzad Irannejad is currently a PhD candidate at the interdisciplinary Re-
search Training Group "Early Concepts of Humans and Nature: Universal, Spe-
cific, Interchanged", JGU Mainz, Germany. After graduating with a PharmD from
Tehran University of Medical Sciences in 2009, she has focused in her research
on the textual transfer of medical knowledge from the Greek to the Arabic tradi-
tion. In her current project "Localization of the Avicennean inner senses in a Hip-
pocratic body" in Mainz, she studies the Greek precursors to the various elements
of the theory of Inner Senses as epitomized in the works of Avicenna. Her re-
search, thus, deals with how concepts and ideas regarding the brain and the mind
were transformed as they travelled beyond linguistic and cultural borders. Her
other research interests include codicology and paleography in the Islamicate
world, the era of paradigm shift in medicine in Qajar Iran, and the relationship
between medicine and classical Persian cuisine. She is now concluding her disser-
tation, hosted by the Fuat Sezgin Research Foundation for the History of Science
in Islam, and the Orient-Institut in Istanbul. She has presented the results of her
research in numerous international conferences and has several papers in press on
the anatomy of the brain, the concepts of inner senses, embodiment of mental fac-
ulties and the relationship between medicine and cuisine.

She is a senior researcher in the history of science in the SPHERE team
(UMR 7219, CNRS & University Paris Diderot, Paris 7). After her PHD in Bio-
chemistry and in Biophysics, she studied the effects of environment (water, ions,
irradiations…) on virus and nucleoprotein complexes in different CNRS Labora-
tories. Since 2000 she has focused her work on drug therapies in the medieval pe-
riod. Physicians and pharmacists allowed the drug use after very long observa-
tions of drug effects on various patients. She has examined medieval pharmacy
and medicine written in Arabic and in Persian, particularly Rāzī or Rhazes' (ca.
865 – 925) conception of drug effects that was a permanent confrontation between
book learning and practice observations. She has published on drug therapies for
near incurable diseases such as smallpox, leprosy and melancholia. Her publica-
tions developed the role of alchemy on drug production, the use of honey, clay
and the effect of the presence of pests and housing environment on health. She has
studied also the role of animals in the daily life of humans in the work of the me-
dieval author Ğāḥiẓ (776-869). She has focused on understanding the complex
process that should aim at better health. This process includes the place of resi-
dence, therapy by baths, psychological state, habits and the patient need for food
and beverages as well as varieties of drug therapies.
